Duplicate contacts leave you opening several cards just to find one person’s phone number. Your iPhone’s built-in merge option combines detected duplicates, while manual cleanup handles the entries it misses. Start with Contacts in iOS 26, then use the Mac or Google options if that’s where you manage your address book.
Merge all detected duplicates at once
This combines duplicate cards your iPhone has already identified.
Open Contacts on your iPhone.
Tap View Duplicates below My Card.
Tap Merge All to combine the detected duplicates.
Review matches before combining them
Want to check each match first? Open Contacts, then tap View Duplicates below My Card.
Select an individual duplicate to review its details. Merge it after checking that both cards belong to the same person.
iPhone detects duplicate cards with the same first and last name. If View Duplicates is missing or the entry you need isn’t detected, try manually linking the cards next.
Link cards with different names
One person, two names in your address book? Manual linking displays separate cards as one unified contact, including entries from different accounts. The underlying records stay separate.
In Contacts, open one of the person’s cards and tap Edit. Choose Link Contacts, then select the other entry. Tap Link to create the unified view.
To choose the displayed name, open a linked card and tap its name. Select Use This Name For Unified Card.
Combine details manually into one card
Open the card you want to keep in Contacts.
Tap Edit.
Enter the other card’s unique information, including the phone numbers and email addresses you want to retain.
Tap Done.
Check that the saved card contains everything you need before deleting the extra entry.
Open the redundant card.
Tap Edit.
Select Delete Contact.
Tap Delete Contact again to confirm.
Remember, deleting a contact stored in an account also deletes it from other devices using that account.
Use a Mac for a larger cleanup
Contacts on macOS Tahoe 26 merges duplicates within an account that also syncs to your iPhone.
- 1.Open Contacts on your Mac.
- 2.Select the account that syncs to your iPhone.
- 3.Choose Card > Look for Duplicates.
- 4.Click Merge.
Clean up Google contacts through your account
On a computer, open Google Contacts using the Google Account synced to your iPhone.
Choose Menu > Merge & fix.
Under Merge duplicates, select Merge for one suggestion or Merge all for every suggestion.
For a duplicate Google hasn’t suggested, hover over the contact’s picture or monogram.
Check its selection box.
Select each additional card you want to combine using its selection box.
Click the merge icon at the top right.
Keep each merge within one Google Account, because Google doesn’t allow merging contacts saved in different Google Accounts.
Keep future contacts in the right place
If account-side merges aren’t reaching your iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts. Select the relevant account and turn on Contacts to enable syncing.
With multiple contact accounts, choose where new entries are saved under Settings > Apps > Contacts > Default Account. Select your preferred account. This sets the destination for future contacts without moving or merging existing ones.
When someone calls from a new number, open Phone and tap the number in the Calls list. Choose Add to Existing Contact, then select the person’s contact. That adds the number to their existing card without creating another one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I merge contacts automatically on iCloud.com?
iCloud.com has no current official automatic merge command. On a tablet or computer, open iCloud Contacts and select the card to keep. Click Edit, enter the other card’s unique details using the relevant fields or Add Field, then click Save. After checking the saved details, select All Contacts and the redundant card. Choose the Actions button > Delete Contact > Delete. Changes sync to iPhones with iCloud Contacts enabled.
Why can’t I edit some contacts on my iPhone?
Contacts supplied by a third-party contact provider are managed in that app and cannot be edited in Contacts. Open Settings > Apps > Contacts > Providers to check the provider controls. Use the supplying app’s contact-management tools.
Can I choose specific contacts to merge on a Mac?
Yes. In Contacts on your Mac, select the duplicate cards within the same account, then choose Card > Merge Selected Cards. The resulting card retains unique information. Use an account that syncs to your iPhone for the changes to reach it.
Can I limit which contacts a cleaning app can access?
Yes. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts and select the app. Choose Limited Access under Contacts Access. Tap Edit Selected Contacts, select the relevant contacts, then tap Done. This controls access; it doesn’t merge contacts.
