To disable the Windows key while gaming, turn on your keyboard's Windows lock or Gaming Mode using its dedicated button or model-specific shortcut. A supported manufacturer app is the next option, followed by a remapping tool if your keyboard lacks a suitable control. The software steps below use Windows 11 menus.

Choose a method based on when you want the key blocked: during a gaming session, only while one game is active, or until you deliberately restore it. Blocking the key itself and blocking selected shortcuts produce different results, so choose the option that matches what you keep pressing accidentally.

The short version

  • Start with hardware: Use the lock button or shortcut documented for your exact keyboard model.
  • Check the companion app: Supported gaming keyboards and laptops can disable the Windows key through their manufacturer controls.
  • For a lasting change: SharpKeys disables either Windows key through a registry mapping that applies after you sign out and back in or restart.
  • For one game: An AutoHotkey v2 script can block the keys only while the specified game is active, depending on its input handling.
  • Use PowerToys cautiously: Microsoft advises against Keyboard Manager in games because interception can affect FPS and some games bypass it.

Use your keyboard's gaming lock

Start with the control built into your keyboard. Use only the shortcut for your exact model, because keyboards from the same brand can assign different functions to the same combination. Repeat the applicable toggle when you want normal access back.

On supported full-size and tenkeyless Razer keyboards with Gaming Mode, press Fn + F10. The Huntsman Mini and Huntsman Mini Analog use Fn + U, while the Huntsman V3 Pro Mini uses Fn + O. Gaming Mode blocks the Windows key.

For Logitech G keyboards equipped with Game Mode, press the Game Mode button or operate its switch. This disables both the Windows and Context Menu keys. On the Logitech G413 SE TKL, press Fn + Windows to lock or unlock the Windows key.

Corsair models with a dedicated Win Lock button, including the K100 AIR, let you press that button to toggle the lock. On the full-size K70 CORE, press and release Fn + F1; on the wired K70 CORE TKL, use Fn + F9. Their Win Lock indicators show the state.

On the HyperX Alloy FPS and Alloy FPS Pro, press Fn + F12 to toggle Game Mode. The Alloy Core RGB uses its dedicated Game Mode button, marked with a crosshair and a G. Do not use Fn + F12 for that purpose on the Alloy Core RGB, because that combination toggles the entire keyboard's lock mode.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scope II uses Fn + Windows. Wooting Two HE, 60HE v2 and 80HE keyboards use the same combination with their default mappings, while the original Wooting 60HE uses Fn + Caps Lock + Windows. Customized Wooting function layers can change these shortcuts.

Configure a supported keyboard app

A companion app can control how your keyboard's lock behaves. Follow the instructions for your supported device, since the controls vary by model and application. If your model lacks the relevant control, choose another applicable method from the table.

In Razer Synapse 4, select your compatible keyboard under DEVICES. Under GAMING MODE, select Always on or Enable in-game, depending on when you want the lock active. Use the same control to turn Gaming Mode off afterward.

For compatible Corsair keyboards in iCUE 4 or newer, select the keyboard, then open Performance. In iCUE 5.14 and newer, turn on Disable WinKey under When Win Lock is ON:; in earlier iCUE versions, the same settings are labeled Disable Windows Key and When Windows Key Lock is ON:. Then activate the keyboard's Win Lock control. If the lock is active but the key still works, check that setting before switching methods. Turn it off if you want the key available while the lock remains active.

Use Synapse 4 for a supported Razer companion-app installation, checking your device's compatibility first. Razer says Synapse 3 stopped receiving updates and cloud services on February 3, 2026.

Use your gaming laptop's control

Supported gaming laptops can provide a key switch in the manufacturer's utility. These controls depend on the exact computer, so use the matching instructions below. Restore the key through the same control after gaming.

On compatible ASUS ROG and TUF laptops, open Armoury Crate, select Home, then use Win Key under System Configuration to disable or enable the key. Disabling it can also disable display-switch shortcuts that use Windows. On compatible computers running Armoury Crate 5.0 or newer, create a profile under Scenario Profiles and configure Win Key under System Configuration. Select See Options beside the profile name to link a game.

For supported MSI gaming notebooks, open MSI Center, then select Features > General Settings. Turn off Windows Key to disable it, then turn it back on when needed. MSI says available functions differ by model.

On Acer Nitro notebooks with this NitroSense control, launch NitroSense from Start, select Settings in the upper-right corner, then turn off Windows and menu key. The toggle changes from red to black, and turning it on restores both keys. On supported Predator notebooks, launch PredatorSense and select Settings in the upper-right corner. Turn off Windows and menu key, then close PredatorSense to save the change.

Disable the keys persistently with SharpKeys

Choose SharpKeys when you want the change to remain active without keeping a remapping app running. Its machine-wide mappings work on Windows 11 and require administrator access. The selected keys stay disabled outside games until you reverse the mappings.

Get SharpKeys from its official product page, using the author's Releases or Microsoft Store link. For Windows on ARM, follow the author's ZIP-package instructions. Open SharpKeys and select Add.

On the left, select Special: Left Windows (E0_5B). On the right, select -- Turn Key Off (00_00), then select OK. Repeat with Special: Right Windows (E0_5C) if you also want to block the right-hand key.

Select Write to Registry and restart Windows to apply the mappings. To undo the change, delete the relevant mappings in SharpKeys, select Write to Registry again, and restart. Uninstalling SharpKeys alone does not reverse the registry mappings it created.

Block the keys only while a game is active

AutoHotkey v2 offers a foreground-game option when you want normal key behavior elsewhere. Install v2 from the official AutoHotkey download page. Software interception can be restricted or ineffective in individual games, so use another applicable method if your game bypasses it.

Save the following as a file ending in .ahk, replacing game.exe with the game's actual executable name. Run the file to activate the script.

#Requires AutoHotkey v2.0

#HotIf WinActive("ahk_exe game.exe")

LWin::return RWin::return #HotIf

The script blocks both Windows keys while the matching game window is active, subject to the game's input handling. Outside that foreground window, they retain their normal behavior. Exit the script from its notification-area icon when you want to stop it completely.

For temporary blocking across applications, save and run the shorter script below instead. It blocks the keys while the script runs, with the same game-input limitations, and exiting it restores normal behavior.

LWin::return
RWin::return

Set up temporary mappings in PowerToys

PowerToys Keyboard Manager can disable individual keys or selected shortcuts, but Microsoft advises against using it in games. Intercepting input can affect FPS, and some game input APIs bypass its mappings. Use your keyboard's own lock or another applicable method if those limitations affect your game.

Install PowerToys using the Microsoft Store or GitHub links on Microsoft's installation page. Open PowerToys Settings > Keyboard Manager and enable Keyboard Manager. These controls apply to the new editor in PowerToys v0.101.2362.0.

Select Open editor > Add new remapping. Under Trigger, select Key or shortcut and record the left Windows key. Under Action, select Disable key or shortcut, then select Save. Repeat for the right Windows key if present.

To block a specific multi-key shortcut instead, select Open editor > Add new remapping and record that combination under Trigger. Choose Disable key or shortcut under Action. For a game-specific shortcut mapping, check Only apply to a specific app, enter the executable name in App name, then select Save.

Leave Only apply to a specific app unchecked for a global shortcut mapping, then select Save. App-specific targeting applies to multi-key shortcuts, not a Windows key alone. PowerToys must remain running for its mappings to apply.

Restore access after gaming

Reverse the method you used before removing software or changing unrelated settings. Toggle a hardware lock off, restore the manufacturer app's key control, or exit an AutoHotkey script. For PowerToys mappings, close PowerToys or turn off Keyboard Manager; remapping stops immediately without restarting Windows.

Persistent SharpKeys mappings require their own reversal and another sign-out or restart. Keyboard onboard settings also need to be reversed through the appropriate device control. Removing a companion application does not reliably clear those settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does NoWinKeys disable the Windows key itself?

No, NoWinKeys disables covered shell shortcuts rather than the standalone Windows key. Microsoft's documented Windows 11 policy scope includes Pro, Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise.

Can PowerToys disable every keyboard shortcut?

No, PowerToys cannot remap reserved combinations such as Windows + L or Ctrl + Alt + Del. Those combinations are exceptions even when you configure shortcut mappings.

Does removing the Windows keycap disable the key?

No, removing only the keycap leaves the switch functional. Switch removal applies only to keyboards with manufacturer-supported hot-swap procedures, not soldered keyboards or laptop keyboards.

How do you lock the Windows key on a Keychron K1?

Put the supported Keychron K1 in Windows mode, then hold Fn + Win for three seconds. Repeat the combination to unlock it. This shortcut is not a universal instruction for K1 Pro, Max, HE or Ultra models.

Can Rockstar Games Launcher block the Windows key?

For FiveM using GTAV Enhanced on Windows 11, open Rockstar Games Launcher, select Settings and check Disable Windows Key. Uncheck Disable Windows Key to restore access. Do not assume the same behavior applies to other Rockstar game and version combinations.

Can you move Windows-key functionality instead of disabling it?

Yes, on MSI notebooks supporting this option, open MSI Center, then select Features > General Settings. Use Switch Key to exchange the Windows and Fn functions. Use the same control again to restore the original arrangement.
