To make Strength potions in Minecraft, put Water Bottles in a fueled Brewing Stand, brew them with Nether Wart, then brew them again with Blaze Powder. You need separate Blaze Powder for fuel and for the brewing ingredient. This recipe works in current vanilla Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, in Survival and Creative.
Once you have an ordinary Potion of Strength, add Redstone Dust for extended duration or Glowstone Dust for Strength II. You can also turn your potion into a splash version with Gunpowder, then a lingering version with Dragon's Breath.
The short version
- Basic recipe: Brew Water Bottles with Nether Wart, then brew the resulting Awkward Potions with Blaze Powder.
- Fuel: Put Blaze Powder in the upper left fuel slot and separate powder in the top ingredient slot.
- Upgrade: Start with an ordinary Strength potion and add Redstone Dust for extended duration or Glowstone Dust for Strength II.
- Throwable versions: Add Gunpowder for a splash potion, then Dragon's Breath for a lingering potion.

Gather your brewing equipment and ingredients
Obtain a Brewing Stand, or craft one using a Blaze Rod and three Cobblestone. Gather Water Bottles, Nether Wart and Blaze Powder for the basic recipe. Keep enough Blaze Powder for both the fuel slot and the separate ingredient step.
You can brew one to three Water Bottles at a time. For an upgraded or throwable version, also gather Redstone Dust, Glowstone Dust, Gunpowder or Dragon's Breath as needed. Make the ordinary Strength potion before adding those ingredients.
Brew the ordinary Strength potion
Open the Brewing Stand and put Blaze Powder in the fuel slot at the upper left. Place one to three Water Bottles in the bottom slots, then put Nether Wart in the top ingredient slot. Wait for brewing to finish so the Water Bottles become Awkward Potions.
Leave the Awkward Potions in the bottom slots and add separate Blaze Powder to the top ingredient slot. Wait for brewing to finish again, then collect your Potions of Strength.
Choose extended Strength or Strength II
For extended duration, place an ordinary Potion of Strength in a bottom slot of a fueled Brewing Stand. Add Redstone Dust to the top ingredient slot, wait for brewing to finish, then collect the extended potion. Choose this upgrade when you want longer duration.
For Strength II, place an ordinary Potion of Strength in a bottom slot of a fueled Brewing Stand. Add Glowstone Dust to the top ingredient slot, wait for brewing to finish, then collect the potion with the Strength II effect. Start with the ordinary potion rather than the version extended with Redstone Dust.
Make splash and lingering Strength potions
Place your brewed Strength potion in a bottom slot of a fueled Brewing Stand, then add Gunpowder to the top ingredient slot. Wait for brewing to finish and collect the Splash Potion of Strength, which you can throw. You can use ordinary, extended or Strength II potions for this conversion in Java and Bedrock.
To make a lingering version, place a Splash Potion of Strength in a bottom slot of a fueled Brewing Stand. Add Dragon's Breath to the top ingredient slot, wait for brewing to finish, then collect the Lingering Potion of Strength. This conversion also works with ordinary, extended and Strength II variants.
Fix brewing ingredient mistakes
If your stand has Blaze Powder only in its fuel slot, add separate powder to the top ingredient slot after making Awkward Potions. Fuel powers the stand, while the ingredient powder makes the Strength potion. Keep the Nether Wart step before the Blaze Powder ingredient step.
If you are trying to make a lingering potion from a drinkable one, brew it with Gunpowder first. Then add Dragon's Breath to the resulting splash potion. Dragon's Breath converts a splash potion and does not replace the Gunpowder step.
Get a Strength potion with a Java command
In current Java Edition, you can obtain a Strength potion directly with commands enabled or the appropriate server operator permission. Open chat and enter this command for one ordinary Potion of Strength.
/give @s minecraft:potion[minecraft:potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:strength"}] 1For extended Strength, replace minecraft:strength with minecraft:long_strength. For Strength II, use minecraft:strong_strength instead. Keep the rest of the command unchanged when switching effects.
You can also choose the potion's form in the command. Replace the item identifier minecraft:potion with minecraft:splash_potion for a splash potion or minecraft:lingering_potion for a lingering potion.
Enable and use Bedrock potion commands
Enabling cheats disables achievements for that world. To use Bedrock commands, open the world's settings and enable Activate Cheats.
If command permission is missing, open the pause menu and select the permission icon beside your player name, then enable the operator commands permission. You need to be the world owner or have the host grant the required permission. Return to chat once you have permission.
Microsoft lists the Strength potion data values below for Bedrock versions through 1.21.111 and advises double-checking the result on later versions. With cheats and command permission enabled, enter this command in chat for one ordinary Potion of Strength.
/give @s potion 1 31The final number selects the potion variant. For extended Strength, enter this command instead.
/give @s potion 1 32For enhanced Strength, use the data value 33. Enter this command to get that version.
/give @s potion 1 33Build a button operated potion dispenser
In Bedrock, you can make a command block give the nearest player a Strength potion when a button activates it. You need Creative mode, cheats, operator permission and command blocks enabled. The potion command uses the same data value Microsoft lists for Bedrock versions through 1.21.111.
With those requirements met, open chat. Enter this command to obtain a command block.
/give @p command_blockPlace and open the command block. Enter the following command in the block to give the nearest player a Strength potion.
/give @p potion 1 31Set Block Type to Impulse, Condition to Unconditional, and Redstone to Needs Redstone. Activate the block with a redstone-powered button to give the nearest player the potion.
Find ready made potions in Bedrock trials
In Bedrock Edition, explore a Trial Chamber and open its supply chests for a chance at ready-made Strength potions. Transfer any Potion of Strength you find into your inventory. The loot is random, so opening a supply chest does not guarantee a potion.
You can also complete an ominous trial spawner encounter in Bedrock for another chance at a Strength potion. Collect the spawner's ejected rewards and look for the potion among them. This reward is random too, so use the Brewing Stand recipe when you want to make the potion yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does an old Java Strength potion command fail?
Java Edition 1.20.5 replaced the old Potion item tag with the potion_contents item component. If your command uses the old Potion NBT tag, switch to the square-bracket component syntax for current Java Edition.
Can you multiply Strength potions with dripstone and a cauldron?
You cannot use the old dripstone trick in current Bedrock because Mojang removed dripping water's ability to fill cauldrons with potions in version 1.17.30. Use the Brewing Stand recipe to make additional Strength potions.
How many Strength potions can a Trial Chamber supply chest award?
In Bedrock Edition, you can get two Strength potions from a supply chest's Strength potion loot roll. That roll is random, so opening a supply chest does not guarantee the pair.
How many Strength potions can an ominous trial spawner award?
In Bedrock Edition, you can receive one Potion of Strength from the ominous trial spawner's consumables loot pool. Ominous trials were introduced in version 1.21.
