A blast furnace recipe won’t work in your inventory’s small crafting grid, or with ordinary stone in the bottom row. You need a crafting table, five iron ingots, one furnace, and three full smooth stone blocks. Here’s where each ingredient goes, how to prepare the smooth stone, and what to check if the output stays empty.
Build your blast furnace at a crafting table
Your inventory’s 2×2 crafting grid is too small for the blast furnace recipe.
Open a Crafting Table to use its 3×3 grid. One blast furnace takes five iron ingots, one furnace, and three full smooth stone blocks.
Fill the top row with three Iron Ingots.
Arrange the middle row as Iron Ingot, Furnace, Iron Ingot, from left to right.
Fill the bottom row with three Smooth Stone blocks.
Collect the Blast Furnace from the output slot. Crafting consumes all nine ingredients, including the furnace in the center. This layout works in both Java and Bedrock Editions.
Prepare smooth stone from stone or cobblestone
This supplies the three smooth stone blocks the crafting recipe needs.
If you’re starting with Cobblestone, smelt three blocks in a regular Furnace with fuel to produce three Stone blocks. Skip this step if you already have stone. A blast furnace or smoker cannot perform either of these stone-smelting recipes.
Smelt the three Stone blocks in a regular Furnace with fuel to turn them into Smooth Stone.
Collect all three Smooth Stone blocks for the bottom row of the crafting recipe.
The recipe book can fill the grid for you
With the ingredients in your inventory, open the recipe book at a Crafting Table. In Bedrock Edition with recipe unlocking enabled, obtaining a Smooth Stone block unlocks this recipe, so this opening needs to happen after you collect one.
Search the recipe book for blast furnace. If the recipe isn’t displayed, the manual layout above is the fallback.
Select Blast Furnace to populate the crafting grid. The recipe book also highlights missing ingredients.
Collect the Blast Furnace from the output slot.
If the crafting output stays empty
Ordinary stone or smooth stone slabs in the bottom row prevent this recipe from working.
Replace any incorrect bottom-row ingredients with three full Smooth Stone blocks.
Check the Iron Ingot placement next. You need five ingots total, with three across the top and two flanking the furnace in the middle row. A four-ingot arrangement does not match the recipe.
Put a Furnace in the center slot. The finished layout fills every slot of the Crafting Table’s 3×3 grid.
Collect one from a village instead
A village blast furnace lets you skip gathering the crafting ingredients.
Look for a village armorer’s house containing a blast furnace. Not every village generates with one.
In Survival, break the blast furnace using a pickaxe.
Collect the dropped Blast Furnace.
Place it wherever you need it.
Get a blast furnace in Creative mode
Open your inventory while in Creative mode, using E on a keyboard.
Search the inventory for blast furnace.
Move Blast Furnace to your hotbar.
Select the block in your hotbar.
Place it in the world.
Tip: Using Pick Block while targeting an existing blast furnace in Creative puts a copy in your hotbar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make a blast furnace with a Crafter?
Yes. Open a Crafter and leave all nine slots enabled. Arrange three iron ingots across the top, an iron ingot, furnace, and iron ingot across the middle, and three smooth stone blocks across the bottom. Supply a fresh redstone pulse by pressing a connected button. Collect the blast furnace ejected from the front.
Can another player give you a blast furnace?
Yes. Have the player select a blast furnace they’re holding. They can press Q on a keyboard or use their controller’s drop control to drop it. Walk over the dropped item to collect it. You can then place it wherever you need it. This transfers an existing item.
Does Pick Block give you a free blast furnace in Survival?
No. Pick Block’s copy-to-hotbar behavior applies in Creative mode. In Survival, craft a blast furnace at a crafting table or collect one from a village instead.
