You want out of a Facebook group, but the leave button changes places depending on where you open the group. The fastest route is to open the group page itself and use the membership control Facebook shows there. Use the matching steps below for desktop, mobile, Facebook Lite, admin accounts, and groups that need an admin's help.

Leave a Facebook group on desktop

Open Facebook on a computer, go to Groups, and select the group you want to leave.

Click Joined in the top right of the group page. Select Leave group, then click Leave Group to confirm.

If this method fails because you cannot reach the group page or the leave control is missing, ask a group admin or moderator to remove you from the group instead.

Use the mobile app menu

The most common cause of confusion on mobile is that the leave option sits on the group page itself rather than in a top level menu, and the Menu button is not in the same corner in every app.

In the Facebook app on iPhone and Android, tap Menu in the top left of Facebook.

Tap Groups, then Your groups, and select the group you want to leave. If you do not see Groups, tap See more.

Tap Joined below the group’s name. Tap Leave Group, then tap Leave Group again to confirm.

Facebook Lite keeps the older layout, with Menu in the top right and Options on the group page. Those steps are in the next section.

Exit a group in Facebook Lite

Facebook Lite uses the same menu path with a final confirmation.

  1. 1.Tap Menu in the top right of Facebook.
  2. 2.Tap Groups and select the group you want to leave.
  3. 3.Tap Options in the top right.
  4. 4.Tap Leave Group.
  5. 5.Tap Leave Group again to confirm.

Try Joined on mobile

On the mobile layout that shows Joined below the group's name, the leave control sits in the group header instead of the top menu.

Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook, then tap Groups. Open Your groups and choose the group you want to exit.

Tap Joined below the group's name. Tap Leave Group, then confirm with Leave Group.

Ask an admin to remove you

Use this when you cannot access the leave button, cannot load the group normally, or need someone with management access to remove your membership.

On mobile, a group admin or moderator can open the group, tap Manage in the top right, then tap Members or People.

They can find your name, tap it, and choose Remove member. They can also choose Ban from group when that is the intended action.

On desktop, an admin or moderator can go to Groups, select the group, open Members or People below the cover photo, use Options next to your name, select Remove member, and click Confirm.

Step down before leaving

Leaving a group you help manage is different from simply stepping down. Removing yourself as an admin or moderator only removes that role; it does not remove you from the group.

On desktop, go to Groups and select your group. Click Members or People below the cover photo, then use Options next to your own name to remove the admin or moderator role.

After that, leave the group normally by clicking Joined, choosing Leave group, and confirming with Leave Group.

Delete a group you own

Use this only when you are an admin and you want to permanently delete the group, not just leave it.

Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook.

Tap Groups, then Your groups, and select your group.

Tap Manage, then select People.

Remove each member by tapping the member and choosing Remove [name] from group.

Once you are the last group member, select Leave group, then confirm Delete group.

Do this only when deletion is the intended result, because a group can be deleted only when it has no members.

Skip fixes that only hide the group

These actions change what you see, but they do not leave the Facebook group.

  1. 1.Unfollowing the group does not remove your membership.
  2. 2.Muting group notifications does not remove your membership.
  3. 3.Hiding group posts does not remove your membership.
  4. 4.Logging out or uninstalling the Facebook app does not remove your membership.

Avoid older three dot menu advice

The older three-dot menu beside a group in Your Groups is not Facebook's current supported leave path.

Open the group itself instead.

On desktop, use Joined, then Leave group, then Leave Group.

On mobile, use Options, then Leave Group, or use Joined below the group name when that layout appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave all Facebook groups at once?

No. Facebook does not provide a current bulk-leave-all-groups method. Leave each group individually.

Does uninstalling Facebook leave my groups?

No. Uninstalling the Facebook app removes the app from that device, but it does not remove your group membership.

Can an admin remove me if I cannot leave myself?

Yes. A group admin or moderator can remove you through the group's Members or People area.

Does stepping down as admin make me leave the group?

No. Removing your admin or moderator role only changes your role. Use Leave group afterward.
