You’re ready to install Steam on your Mac, but a Rosetta prompt or security warning has you stuck. Start with the official download below, then use the matching fix to finish setup. Steam requires macOS 12 or later on Intel and Apple silicon Macs.
Download and install Steam
Open Steam’s official download page. Click Install Steam for macOS. If another platform is selected, choose the Apple logo beneath the download button instead.
Open the downloaded .dmg file. Drag Steam into Applications in the installer window. Then open Steam from Applications. Let Steam finish its initial update.
Sign in to your Steam account. Keep in mind that installing Steam does not make every game in its store compatible with your Mac.
Install Rosetta when Steam requests it
This resolves a Rosetta requirement from an Intel-based installer or component on Apple silicon, not a requirement for every Steam component. Connect your Mac to the internet. Then open Steam from Applications to bring up the installation prompt again.
Click Install when macOS requests Rosetta. Enter your macOS user name and password when prompted.
Allow Steam through macOS security settings
Use these steps when macOS blocks Steam because of an App Store-only restriction or an individual app security block. The fix depends on which restriction you encounter.
For an App Store-only restriction, open System Settings > Privacy & Security. Scroll to Security. Under Allow apps downloaded from, select App Store and identified developers. Then try opening Steam again.
For an individual app block, first confirm that your download came from Steam’s official website and has not been tampered with. A malware warning or damaged-app alert is not an ordinary first-open confirmation.
After attempting to open Steam, return to System Settings > Privacy & Security. Click Open Anyway. Confirm with Open.
Apple removed the older Control-click Open security override in macOS Sequoia. Use the Privacy & Security process on newer systems.
If the download settings or app exception controls are unavailable on a work or school Mac, contact the Mac’s administrator. Organizations can restrict these controls.
Use Homebrew for an alternative install
If you already have Homebrew installed, open Terminal. Homebrew maintains this installation route; Valve does not document it as a supported method.
Run brew install --cask steam. Your Mac must meet your installed Homebrew release’s requirements as well as Steam’s macOS 12 minimum.
Once installation finishes, open Steam from Applications. Homebrew identifies its Steam installer as Intel-based and specifies Rosetta on Apple silicon. Sign in after Steam finishes its initial update.
Check your options for Windows games
A game that requires Windows won’t run through the Mac Steam client alone. Check the individual game’s Mac compatibility before choosing how to play it.
For CrossOver, check the Mac rating and tested CrossOver version on CodeWeavers’ Steam compatibility page. CrossOver installs Windows Steam in a compatibility environment. Check the individual game’s CrossOver compatibility before proceeding.
In CrossOver, select its Steam icon. Click Install. Accept required dependency installations with Yes. Complete the Steam installer.
Let Steam finish updating. Sign in to your Steam account.
Parallels Desktop offers another route through a Windows 11 virtual machine. It requires Windows licensing, and DirectX 12, anti-cheat, and Windows-on-ARM limitations can prevent individual games from running. Neither route guarantees that a particular Windows game will work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install current Steam on macOS Big Sur?
There is no supported current-client installation path on macOS 11 Big Sur. Valve ended Big Sur support on October 15, 2025. Upgrade to macOS 12 or later on compatible hardware before installing Steam.
Is Steam Link from the Mac App Store the same as Steam?
No. Steam Link streams games from another computer already running Steam. It does not install the full Steam store-and-download client on your Mac.
Can I use my phone to sign in to Steam on my Mac?
Yes. After installing the desktop app, scan the QR code on its sign-in screen using Steam Mobile. Approve the sign-in on your phone. The phone assists authentication; it does not install the Mac app.
How can I tell whether an app is Intel-based?
Select the app in Finder. Press Command-I to open Get Info. Check Kind to identify its architecture.
