Install audio drivers in Windows 11 through Windows Update, or reinstall your audio device through Device Manager and restart your PC. Use your PC or audio-device manufacturer’s matching package when Windows cannot supply a compatible driver. These steps use Windows 11 menus.
The short version
- Start with updates: Install available Windows updates, then check for applicable optional audio drivers.
- Match your hardware: Manufacturer downloads must match your exact model, Windows version, and processor architecture.
- Reinstall when needed: Have the matching manufacturer package available before reinstalling through Device Manager.
- Undo a troublesome update: Choose Roll Back Driver when a previous driver is available.

Install audio drivers through Windows Update
Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. Install the available updates and restart your PC. Audio-driver availability depends on your hardware and the drivers its manufacturer has published.
Next, check optional updates because optional drivers are not installed automatically. Return to Windows Update, open Advanced options, and turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products. Under Additional options, open Optional updates.
Select the applicable audio-driver entry, then select Download and install and restart afterward. The entry’s name varies by hardware, so match it to your audio device. If an applicable optional package is not offered, continue with Device Manager or the manufacturer’s download.
Find your audio device in Device Manager
Search Start for Device Manager and open it, then expand Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click your audio device, select Update driver, and choose Search automatically for drivers. Complete the installation and restart your PC.
A message saying that the best driver is already installed does not rule out a newer manufacturer download. If the automatic search does not provide the driver you need, use the model-specific package described below.
When the audio device is missing, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes. Scanning can help rediscover hardware after removal or failed detection, but it does not guarantee a new downloadable driver. For a disabled audio device, right-click it and select Enable device if offered. This restores the installed device rather than installing a driver.
Download the driver for your exact model
Visit your PC or audio-device manufacturer’s support website and identify the exact model. Download its compatible Windows 11 audio package, matching the processor architecture as well as the model. Run the installer, follow its instructions, and restart.
Installer buttons and repair or reinstall options vary by package, so follow the instructions supplied with your download. When the package contains compatible driver files rather than only an installer, you can install those files through Device Manager.
Download and extract the matching package, then right-click Start and select Device Manager. Right-click the audio device and select Update driver, then select Browse my computer for drivers. Select Browse..., choose the extracted folder, and select OK > Next. Select Close when installation finishes.
HDMI or DisplayPort audio may require a graphics-vendor package. If that is your audio connection, you may need to find and update your graphics driver instead of installing a package intended for your PC’s other audio hardware.
Use your PC maker’s update options
On a supported Dell PC with SupportAssist, open SupportAssist, select Update software > Start, and follow the instructions to install applicable updates. For a manual download, open Dell Drivers & Downloads, enter your Service Tag or browse for your product, then find the audio driver and select Download. Run the installer and restart when requested.
Dell also offers Check for updates on its download page for automatic detection, which can require Dell software. Use SupportAssist for the supported consumer workflow if you previously used Dell Update or Alienware Update. Dell ended support for those two older apps on December 31, 2024.
For an HP PC with HP Support Assistant 8 or later, open HP Support Assistant, then open My Dashboard. Find your PC, select Updates, wait for the analysis, and select the applicable updates to download and install. Restart when requested. In Windows S mode, use Windows Update because HP Support Assistant is unavailable there.
On a compatible Lenovo PC, open Lenovo Vantage > System Update > Check for updates and install the applicable audio update. Navigation varies between Vantage versions and device generations. If your app’s layout differs, use the exact-model manufacturer download method.
On a supported ASUS notebook, desktop, all-in-one PC, or gaming handheld, open MyASUS, select System Update, choose the applicable audio package, and select Update selected items. Check Update History afterward. If your device lacks System Update, use the ASUS Download Center to identify your exact product and obtain its compatible Windows 11 audio package. The app lists only newer packages, so use the download page when you need to reinstall an existing version.
On a supported Surface device, open Surface > Help & support > Check for updates to open Windows Update and install available updates. For a manual bundle, open Microsoft’s Surface driver download page, open Manually update Surface drivers and firmware, and choose your exact model. Follow its Download Center link and install the matching Windows package. New driver availability depends on your model’s servicing lifecycle.
Reinstall the audio device and restart
Uninstalling removes the selected audio device from its installed state, and requesting driver removal also attempts to remove its driver. Before proceeding, have the matching manufacturer package available in case Windows cannot reinstall a compatible driver automatically.
Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click the audio device, select Uninstall device, then select Uninstall. Open Start > Power > Restart so Windows can reinstall the driver.
To request removal of the existing driver as well, check the uninstall dialog for the removal checkbox. If it appears, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device before selecting Uninstall, then restart. If the checkbox does not appear, continue with the standard uninstall and restart. Automatic recovery depends on an available compatible driver.
If Windows does not reinstall the driver, run the matching manufacturer package you downloaded. When the device remains missing, return to Device Manager and select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes. Use the folder installation method for a package containing compatible extracted driver files.
Restore the previous driver after a bad update
Rolling back replaces the current audio driver with the retained previous version. Use this route when sound problems began after a driver update. You need administrator permissions and an available previous driver.
In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your audio device, and select Properties. Open the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver, follow the displayed instructions, and select Yes. If Roll Back Driver is disabled, you cannot use that route, so install the matching manufacturer package instead.
Try a compatible Windows audio driver
Selecting an alternative driver replaces the driver currently used for the audio device. A Windows-provided generic driver is an option only when it is compatible with your device. Do not assume that every Realtek, USB, DSP, or display-audio device can use the same generic driver.
Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device, and select Update driver. Select Browse my computer for drivers, then select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Choose the compatible audio driver and select Next. If an applicable Windows-provided driver is not available, use the manufacturer’s model-specific package.
Run audio diagnosis if sound still fails
Open Get Help and enter audio troubleshooter in its search bar. If diagnostic consent is requested, select Yes, then follow the results and proposed fixes. This can help diagnose the remaining problem, but it does not guarantee a driver reinstall.
Microsoft directs you to Get Help in place of the older MSDT audio troubleshooter. Output selection, volume, and enhancement toggles change audio settings rather than install drivers, so those fixes may address a different cause of missing sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do USB audio devices always need a separate driver download?
Compatible USB Audio Class 2.0 devices can use the usbaudio2.sys driver included with Windows 11 when you connect them. A matching manufacturer driver can take precedence. The included driver does not cover every USB interface or every vendor-specific feature.
Can Realtek Audio Console or Nahimic replace the audio driver?
Realtek Audio Console, Nahimic, and DTS apps are not universal replacements for the underlying audio driver. Your model may require related software as well as drivers. For example, MSI’s procedure for the HDA laptops it covers requires model-specific audio components to be reinstalled in a specified order.
Should a Focusrite interface be connected before installing its driver?
For supported Focusrite interfaces, choose your exact interface and Windows software on Focusrite Downloads, then run the installer before connecting the interface. Save your work, select Yes, restart the computer now, select Finish, and connect a USB interface by its USB cable after installation. A Clarett Thunderbolt interface connects only to a Thunderbolt port, not to a USB port or through an adapter, so follow Focusrite’s Clarett Thunderbolt getting-started steps for that model. Choose its Focusrite ASIO driver in your recording software if needed. Check your model and processor architecture before downloading; Focusrite’s Windows 11 compatibility table covers 24H2.
Can you install audio drivers from Microsoft Update Catalog?
Yes, Microsoft positions this route for advanced users and administrators: search for your matching hardware or driver, select Search, then select Download for the compatible package and save the file from the download dialog. Match your hardware, processor architecture, and supported Windows version rather than choosing solely by the newest date. For a CAB package, extract it with expand <CAB FILE NAME> -F:* <DESTINATION>, replacing the placeholders with your file and destination. Install the extracted files through Device Manager’s folder method or PnPUtil.
