To make a saddle in Minecraft, open a Crafting Table and combine 3 Leather with 1 Iron Ingot in the saddle recipe. Crafting is available in Java Edition 1.21.6 and later and Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 and later, so check your version if the recipe is missing.

The short version

  • Use a Crafting Table with 3 Leather and 1 Iron Ingot for a predictable Survival result.
  • Pick up Leather so the recipe appears, then find Saddle in the Recipe Book.
  • Older versions need another source, such as chest loot, fishing, or a Leatherworker trade.
  • Use Shears to recover an equipped saddle from an eligible mob without killing it.
  • Creative inventory and /give provide alternatives when your world permits them.

The estimates cover the action once you have the supplies or reach the source. They exclude travel, villager leveling, and combat, and fishing or chest searches have no guaranteed completion time.

Craft a saddle at a Crafting Table

Place the ingredients by hand

Open a Crafting Table to use its larger crafting grid. Put Leather in the top middle slot, then place Leather, Iron Ingot, and Leather across the middle row. Leave the other slots empty and move the resulting Saddle into your inventory.

That recipe produces one saddle from 3 Leather and 1 Iron Ingot. Use it in Java Edition 1.21.6 and later or Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 and later; older releases do not have this crafting recipe. If you are staying on an older release, use one of the other sources below.

Choose the recipe from the Recipe Book

You can also open the Recipe Book at the Crafting Table and search for Saddle. Select the recipe to put its ingredients into the grid, then take the output. Pick up Leather first if the recipe has not appeared, and check your supplies if ingredients appear in red.

Fix a missing recipe or empty output

If hand crafting produces nothing, check the ingredient positions and make sure you used an Iron Ingot. The recipe needs the named items, so other materials are not substitutes. You can return to the Recipe Book to see the required arrangement instead of guessing at the shape.

Look for saddles in structure chests

For Bedrock Edition, saddle entries remain in Nether Fortress, End City treasure, and Bastion Remnant hoglin stable chest loot. Village options include tannery, weaponsmith, and savanna house chests. Open a chest and move a saddle into your inventory if one is present; these are possible sources, not promises.

If you choose a Nether structure, start by making a Nether portal to reach that dimension. For a village search, consider making a map in Minecraft before setting out. Prefer crafting when you already have its ingredients, since it removes the need to search random chest contents.

Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90 replaced saddle loot with Leather in Monster Room, Ancient City, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid, and Stronghold altar chests. Advice sending you to those chests for saddles applies to older loot tables. In the updated game, any Leather you find there can instead help with the crafting recipe.

Fish for a saddle

Hold a Fishing Rod and press your use control to cast into water. Wait until the bobber sinks, then press use again quickly to reel in the catch. Cast again if you want to keep trying for a saddle, which can appear as treasure.

In Java Edition, treasure requires open water, so a tiny enclosed fishing setup is a poor choice for this task. A practical choice is a lake or ocean away from shore, with clear space above the bobber and no nearby solid underwater blocks. The surrounding water must be source water, so avoid flowing water around your fishing spot.

Luck of the Sea increases the chance of treasure, but does not promise a saddle. Choose crafting if you need a definite result rather than repeated random catches.

Buy a saddle from a Leatherworker

Find a Leatherworker and trade to reach its later offers. A Cauldron is that profession's job site block, and trading increases a villager's trading level. Check the available offers before spending time gathering Emeralds specifically for a saddle.

In Bedrock Edition, the final trading tier selects one offer from a pair containing a dyed Leather Helmet and a Saddle. The saddle offer has a base cost of 6 Emeralds, but trading prices can change. If it is absent, try another Leatherworker or craft the saddle instead of expecting that villager to sell one.

Collect a saddle from a mob drop

In Bedrock Edition, killing a Ravager yourself provides a saddle through its drop table. Collect the dropped item after the fight rather than trying to shear it off. This is an alternative when you encounter one, but crafting avoids the fight entirely.

Bedrock Striders that spawn with a Zombified Piglin rider are already saddled, and a saddled Strider drops its saddle when killed. Check for an equipped saddle rather than assuming every Strider carries one. If you want to keep a saddled mount alive, use the recovery method below once it has no rider.

Recover an equipped saddle with Shears

In Java 1.21.6 and later and Bedrock 1.21.90 and later, hold Shears and use them on an eligible saddled mob. Make sure nobody is riding it and stop crouching or sneaking before interacting.

If the first use removes a leash or armor, collect it and use the Shears again to remove the saddle. Armored Bedrock horses can require another use too. Pick up the saddle that comes off so you can store it or equip another mount.

On an armored Nautilus in Bedrock 1.21.130 and later, shearing removes the armor before the saddle. Use the Shears again to remove the saddle after the armor is off. This extra interaction explains why the first use may leave the saddle in place.

Ravagers are excluded from saddle removal with Shears. A Dispenser containing Shears also cannot remove a mob's saddle, so interact with the animal yourself. Check those restrictions if shearing appears to do nothing before trying another source.

Take a saddle from Creative inventory

In Creative mode, open your inventory, use its search field, and look for Saddle. Move the item into your hotbar or inventory so it is ready to use. You do not need to gather the crafting materials for this route.

Use this option when you are already building in a Creative world. If you want to stay in Survival, crafting, loot, fishing, trading, and recovery let you obtain a saddle without changing the game mode. For a world where item grants are allowed, the command below is another option.

Give yourself a saddle with a command

With commands enabled, open chat and enter /give @s minecraft:saddle 1 to give yourself one saddle. The @s target refers to the player entering the command in chat. Keep the leading slash and the spaces between the target, item name, and quantity.

Enable commands in Java Edition

In Java 26.3 and later, open the pause menu and choose World Options > General > Allow Commands. In Java 26.2, open World Options and enable Allow Commands; this option is unavailable in Hardcore. On Java 26.1 and earlier, use Open to LAN, enable the commands or cheats option, then select Start LAN World.

Enable cheats in Bedrock Edition

In a non-Hardcore Bedrock world, open Settings > Game and enable Allow Cheats. This disables achievements for that world permanently, even if you turn cheats off later. Hardcore worlds do not allow cheats, so use the Survival methods instead.

If needed, open the pause menu, select the icon beside your player, and enable Operator Commands. This permission controls your access to commands in chat and to Command Blocks.

Resolve permission problems

If permissions stop the command on someone else's server, ask its owner to grant access or give you the saddle. For Bedrock permission setup, follow Minecraft's command setup instructions. To grant another saddle from chat, recall the previous command with Up Arrow on a keyboard and send it again.

Set up a button operated Command Block

For an optional Bedrock setup, use Creative mode with cheats and Operator Commands enabled so you can edit a Command Block. Command Blocks must also be enabled in the world settings, which they are by default. Open chat and enter /give @p command_block, then place the block and use it to open its interface.

Enter give @p minecraft:saddle 1 in Command Input. Set Block Type to Impulse, Condition to Unconditional, and Redstone to Needs Redstone. These settings make it run when powered without depending on a previous command's success.

Close the interface, attach a button to the Command Block while sneaking, and press the button to grant one saddle. The @p selector targets the nearest player to the block, so it can give the saddle to someone other than the person pressing the button. For more help with the interface, use Minecraft's Command Block setup instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make a saddle in Minecraft without mods?

Yes, in Java 1.21.6 and later and Bedrock 1.21.90 and later. Use a Crafting Table with 3 Leather and 1 Iron Ingot, or choose the available saddle recipe from the Recipe Book.

Why do older pages say saddles are not craftable?

The crafting recipe was added in Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90 with Chase the Skies. Older releases still need another source, so check your edition and version before following the crafting steps.

Which chests can still contain saddles?

Bedrock options include Nether Fortress, End City treasure, Bastion hoglin stable, village tannery, village weaponsmith, and village savanna house chests. Their contents are random, so checking one of those chests does not guarantee a saddle.

Can I take a saddle off a mob without killing it?

Yes, use Shears in Java 1.21.6 and later or Bedrock 1.21.90 and later. The mob must have no rider, you must not be crouching or sneaking, and Ravagers are excluded. If a use removes a leash or armor first, collect it and use the Shears again.

Why is the saddle recipe missing?

First check that your version includes saddle crafting, then pick up Leather so the recipe appears. Open the Recipe Book at a Crafting Table and check that you have all the required ingredients.

Can I get a saddle with cheats?

Yes, enter /give @s minecraft:saddle 1 in chat when you have permission to use commands. In Bedrock, enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, so choose crafting if you want to keep earning them. Bedrock Hardcore worlds do not allow cheats.
