YouTube TV family sharing breaks when the family group, invite, Google Account, location check, or app sign-in does not line up. Start with the account rules first, then move through the fixes in order so you do not reinstall an app when the family setup is the real blocker.
Check the family sharing rules first
Use this when a family member cannot join, sees a sign-up prompt, or loses access right after being invited. YouTube TV family sharing works only when the manager and members meet Google family group rules.
The family manager must be at least 18, have a Google Account, live in the United States, not belong to another family group, and not sign up with a Google Apps for Business or G Suite account.
Each family member must be at least 13, have a Google Account, live in the same household as the family manager, and not belong to another family group. Google Apps for Business (G Suite) accounts are not eligible for family groups either, so an invited member has to accept with a personal Google Account.
YouTube TV lets the family manager invite up to five family members. Fix any age, household, country, account, or existing-family-group mismatch before changing app settings.
Reopen Family sharing from YouTube TV
This fixes a family plan that was never fully created or needs the manager to confirm the family group again. Sign in to YouTube TV at tv.youtube.com with the family manager's Google Account. Select your profile picture, then open Settings.
Choose Family sharing and select Manage. Next, select Get Started and Create a family group. When the account information is correct, select Confirm and invite your family members.
Use the right invite and Google Account
The most common invite problem is accepting the YouTube TV family invitation with the wrong Google Account. Open the email invitation from the family manager on a device where you can sign in with the account you want to use. Follow the instructions in that invitation to join the family group.
Use the invite within two weeks. Google family invitation links expire after two weeks and work once.
If the invite was accepted with the wrong Google Account, remove that account from the family group or leave the group. Ask the family manager to send a new invitation to the correct email address.
Leave another Google family group
Visit g.co/YourFamily in a mobile or desktop browser. Scroll down and select Leave family group, then select Leave. Open the new YouTube TV family invitation and accept it with the Google Account you want to use. Google notes family switching limits, especially for paid Google subscriptions, so move only when you are ready to join the YouTube TV family group.
Fix Home Area and Current Playback Area
Use this when family sharing is set up but YouTube TV asks to verify your location, shows the wrong local access, or stops working after a real move. The family manager sets the Home Area, and family members must primarily live in the same household.
On Android, after a move the family manager should open the YouTube TV app, select the profile photo, open Location, choose Home Area, and select Update Home Area.
On iPhone or iPad there is no in-app route: the family manager signs in to YouTube TV in a mobile web browser or on a computer, selects the profile photo, opens Home Area (Google's computer instructions label the same menu Location, so use whichever appears), and selects Update next to Home area. Google blocks the change if you have already changed your home area twice in the last 12 months or you are not currently in the new home area.
On a phone or computer, open YouTube TV, select your profile photo, open Location, select Update next to Current playback area, and allow location access when prompted.
On a smart TV, streaming device, or game console, open the YouTube TV app, select your profile photo, open Location, and choose Current Playback Area. On a mobile device, go to tv.youtube.com/verify and allow the website to access your device's location.
Older fixes such as VPNs, browser extensions, GPS spoofing, Apple TV Provider sign-in, and direct family-manager transfer are not supported YouTube TV family sharing fixes. Use Home Area, Current Playback Area, direct YouTube TV sign-in, or a new family group setup instead.
Allow location access on your phone or browser
Location verification fails when the app, browser, or device cannot read your location. Fix the permission first, then repeat the Current Playback Area update.
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services. Turn Location Services on, tap the app you use for YouTube TV verification, choose the needed location option, and turn on Precise Location when exact location is required.
On Android, open Settings, then Location, and turn Use location on. Open Settings, then Location, then App location permissions, choose the app used for YouTube TV or verification, and pick an allowed option such as Allow all the time or Allow only while using the app; on Android 12 and higher, turn on Use precise location when YouTube TV needs accurate playback-area verification.
In Chrome on desktop, open More, then Settings, then Privacy and security, then Site settings, then Location. Allow the YouTube TV verification site when prompted or adjust the site permission there.
If location access still fails, update the Current Playback Area on a different location-aware phone, tablet, or computer signed in with the right Google Account.
Sign in again with the family member account
A TV can keep choosing an old account, so clean up the sign-in before reinstalling anything.
- 1.On the TV YouTube TV app, select your profile photo and choose Sign Out.
- 2.Sign in again by scanning the QR code or visiting tv.youtube.com/start.
- 3.Enter the activation code and select the Google Account tied to the YouTube TV Base Plan or the invited family member.
- 4.Select Allow to finish the TV sign-in.
- 5.When an old account keeps appearing, select your profile photo, then Switch account, then Remove under the account you want to delete from the app.
Refresh the app and device
This fixes app, device, or network glitches after the family group, account, and location settings are already correct. Exit the YouTube TV app completely, then reopen it and try watching again. Turn off the TV, streaming device, game console, phone, or tablet, wait 30 seconds, and restart it.
Unplug your router, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Install the latest system updates for your device. Update YouTube TV to the newest available app version. Uninstall YouTube TV, reinstall it, sign in again with the invited family member's Google Account, and try watching again.
Remove and re-add the family member
Use this when one person still has no access after the invite, account, location, and app checks are correct. The family manager can remove that member and send a clean invitation.
Sign in to YouTube TV, select your profile picture, then open Purchases and memberships. Select your membership, then select Edit next to Family sharing settings.
Select the family group member's name and choose Remove member. Send a fresh invitation to the correct Google Account afterward.
You can also manage the group at g.co/YourFamily. Select the family member, then choose Remove member, then Remove.
If the whole family group is wrong, the manager can open Settings, then Family sharing, then Manage, go to g.co/YourFamily, open Menu, and select Delete your family group. Google warns that after deleting a family group, you can only create or join another family group one more time in the next 12 months.
When self-service fixes do not solve a disabled family group, unexplained sharing failure, location-change error, billing confusion, or account recovery problem, use YouTube TV support at support.google.com/youtubetv/gethelp.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does YouTube TV say a family member needs to sign up?
They are signed into the wrong Google Account, accepted the invite with the wrong account, or are not in the manager's Google family group. Sign out, switch to the invited account, and resend the invite if needed.
Can YouTube TV family members live in different homes?
No. The supplied Google rules say family members must live in the same household as the family manager, and the manager sets the Home Area.
How many people can be on YouTube TV family sharing?
The YouTube TV family manager can invite up to five family members.
Can I change the YouTube TV family manager directly?
No current vendor-supported menu path directly transfers the YouTube TV family manager role. The current workaround is to leave or delete the family group and have the desired person create or purchase the membership under their own Google Account, subject to Google family-switching limits.
