If YouTube buffers, loads slowly, or responds sluggishly, start by checking the connection and lowering video quality. Then work through the app, browser, TV, and device checks below, replaying the video after each change.

Pick the device you are using and stop once videos load normally again. Every path below uses current YouTube, Android, iPhone, iPad, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Windows, and TV controls.

Lower the video quality first

High-quality playback needs more bandwidth and a device that supports the format. On a computer, open the video player, choose Settings, then Quality, and select a lower video quality.

On a TV, open the YouTube video player, choose Settings, then Quality, and pick the quality you want. Devices without newer codec support, including VP9 support, do not show every high-quality format.

On the YouTube app for Android, iPhone, or iPad, tap your profile picture, open Settings, then Video quality preferences, and choose Auto or Data saver for mobile networks and Wi-Fi. For only the current video, open the player’s Settings, choose Quality, then choose Auto, Data saver, or Advanced and select a lower resolution.

Restart YouTube and the browser

Close and reopen YouTube or your browser, then replay the video to see whether playback improves.

Close the YouTube app completely.

Reopen YouTube and replay the video.

On a TV, press the Home button on your remote.

Reopen the YouTube app and replay the video.

On a computer, close your web browser.

Open the browser again and replay the YouTube video.

If many tabs are open, close the extra tabs and keep only the YouTube tab you need.

Check your connection before changing everything

A slow or unstable connection makes YouTube buffer even when the app is fine.

  1. 1.Replay the video after switching connections: use Wi-Fi if you are on mobile data, or use mobile data if Wi-Fi is slow. Data rates may apply.
  2. 2.On Android, open Settings, then Network & internet or Connections, turn Wi-Fi off and mobile data on, and test YouTube again.
  3. 3.Use Airplane Mode as a quick reset on Android by opening Settings, then Network & internet or Connections, turning Airplane Mode on, waiting 10 seconds, and turning Airplane Mode off.
  4. 4.For TVs and streaming devices, run an internet speed test near the TV. YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming.
  5. 5.If TV speed is low, move the TV or streaming device within router range, avoid metal or wall obstruction, and minimize other devices on the network.

Clear YouTube cache and browser data

Try clearing cache as a troubleshooting step. If you also remove browser cookies or site data, you may need to sign in again. On Android, open Settings, then Apps or Applications, choose YouTube, open Storage or Storage & cache, tap Clear cache, and replay the video.

On iPhone or iPad, Offload App preserves the app’s documents and data, so it does not clear them. If YouTube still misbehaves after restarting and updating, use the delete-and-redownload steps below. Deleting the app can remove locally stored app data.

In Chrome on a computer, use More, Delete browsing data, choose a time range such as Last hour or All time, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Delete data. In Edge, go to Settings and more, Settings, Privacy, search, and services, Clear browsing data, Choose what to clear, select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data, then choose Clear now.

In Firefox, open the menu button, then Settings, Privacy & Security, Cookies and Site Data or Browsing data, then Clear Data... or Clear browsing data. In Safari on Mac, use Safari, Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data, then Remove or Remove All; on iPhone, use Settings, Apps, Safari, then Clear History and Website Data.

Update or reinstall the YouTube app

If restarting YouTube does not help, check for an app update before considering a reinstall.

On Android, open Google Play Store.

Tap your profile picture, then open Manage apps & device.

Open Updates available, choose YouTube, and tap Update; use Update all when you want every pending app update installed.

On iPhone or iPad, open App Store.

Tap your profile icon and check App Updates.

Update YouTube when it appears; if no app update is available, update iPhone or iPad software.

On Android, first check that the official YouTube listing in Google Play says the app is available for your device. Uninstalling erases data saved in the app. If your device permits a full uninstall and you accept that data loss, open Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then choose Manage apps & device, Manage, YouTube, and Uninstall. Return to the official YouTube listing and tap Install. If YouTube is preinstalled and cannot be removed, skip this step and use the update and cache checks instead.

On iPhone or iPad, consider reinstalling only after restarting and updating have not helped. Deleting YouTube can remove locally stored app data. If you accept that, touch and hold YouTube on the Home Screen, then tap Remove App, Delete App, and Delete. Open App Store, tap your profile picture, choose Apps & Purchase History, Your Apps, then Not on this [device]. Find YouTube, tap the Redownload button, and test playback again.

On Apple TV, open App Store, search for YouTube, select YouTube, then choose Update.

On Android TV, press Home, go to Apps, Google Play Store, Settings, Auto-Update Apps, then Auto-update apps at any time.

Browser fixes when YouTube is slow on a computer

Use these steps when YouTube runs slowly in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari but other devices play normally. A browser extension, old browser build, cache problem, or performance setting can drag down playback.

In Chrome on a computer, test YouTube in an Incognito window from More, then New Incognito window. To update Chrome on a computer, open More, Help, About Google Chrome, then choose Relaunch.

If YouTube works in Incognito, return to a normal Chrome window. Open More, Extensions, Manage extensions, turn off your extensions, and reload YouTube. If playback improves, turn extensions on one at a time and reload after each change. Remove an extension only if the problem returns when you enable it: select Remove, then Remove again to confirm. If disabling extensions makes no difference, turn them back on and continue troubleshooting.

Chrome performance controls are under More, Settings, Performance. Turn Memory Saver on or off for the current behavior, add youtube.com under Always keep these sites active, or use Preload pages with Standard preloading or Extended preloading to speed likely page loads.

In Edge, remove extensions from the extension icon next to the address bar by choosing Remove from Microsoft Edge, then Remove. Keep YouTube active in Settings and more, Settings, System and performance, Performance, Always keep these sites active, Add site, enter the full YouTube URL, then choose Add.

In Firefox, open the menu button, then Help, Troubleshoot Mode..., and Restart. In the next dialog, choose Open to enter Troubleshoot Mode, then test YouTube. If YouTube improves, return to normal Firefox and disable extensions from the menu button, Add-ons and themes or Extensions and themes, then Extensions.

TV and streaming device checks

For a smart TV, streaming box, or game console, this method applies when the YouTube app on your TV buffers or responds slowly after your connection checks out. Start with the device itself before changing your account or playback path.

Unplug the TV, streaming device, or game console from power.

Wait several seconds, reconnect power, return to YouTube, and replay the video.

Install any available system update from the device’s update section in settings.

If the YouTube app on your TV is signed in but still slow, open YouTube, choose your profile picture, select the icon beneath it to manage your profile, choose Next to continue and sign out, then go back to Settings and Sign in. Enter a code if YouTube prompts for one.

During supported live Primetime Channels playback, buffering increases when lower delay takes priority. Open the bottom-right Settings, choose Broadcast Delay, and set it back to Default; use Decrease only when lower delay matters more than buffering risk.

If the TV app still struggles, watch on another supported device. For TV viewing, cast with Chromecast from another device or connect a laptop with an HDMI cable.

Clean up a slow phone or computer

Restart the device, then replay the video. On most Android phones, press the power button for about 30 seconds or until the phone restarts, then tap Restart if prompted.

On Android, update the system from Settings, System, Software update, then follow the on-screen steps. Update apps from Google Play Store, your profile icon, Manage apps & devices, Updates available, then update YouTube or all apps.

Free Android storage from Settings when space is low. Android phones can have issues below 10 percent free storage, and clearing cache from Settings, Apps, YouTube or your browser, Storage, then Clear cache helps without deleting app data.

On Windows 11, update Windows from Start, Settings, Windows Update, Check for updates, then Download & install. Optional drivers are under Start, Settings, Windows Update, Advanced options, Optional updates, then Download & install.

Reduce Windows background load by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc, opening Startup apps, right-clicking unwanted startup apps, and choosing Disable. Clean storage from Start, Settings, System, Storage, Storage Sense, then Run Storage sense now.

Skip old Flash Player fixes for YouTube. Adobe stopped supporting Flash Player on December 31, 2020, Chromium removed Flash support in Chrome 88 and later, and current YouTube uses HTML5 playback.

If device cleanup fails, use another supported playback path, such as the YouTube app on another device, Chromecast, or a laptop connected to the TV with HDMI.

When a work or school device is managed

This fixes YouTube slowness caused by managed browser updates, blocked settings, or extensions you cannot remove yourself.

Check whether Chrome or Edge says it is managed by your organization.

Ask your IT admin to review browser update behavior, extension rules, and performance policies for YouTube.

Use a personal device or another supported playback path when policy changes are not available and you need to watch immediately.

After an admin changes policy, reopen the browser and replay YouTube before changing anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is YouTube slow even when other sites work?

YouTube can be slower than basic webpages because high video quality, cached playback data, browser extensions, many open tabs, or low device resources affect video playback directly.

What internet speed does YouTube recommend for HD on TV?

For YouTube on TVs and streaming devices, YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming.

Should I clear YouTube data or only cache on Android?

Start with Clear cache. Use Clear storage only when you accept deleting app data, because it goes beyond a basic cache refresh.

Does Flash Player fix slow YouTube videos?

No. Flash Player is not a current YouTube fix. Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020, and current YouTube uses HTML5 playback.
