X, formerly Twitter, won't load, the app freezes, or you can't sign in. Start with the outage and connection checks below, then follow the fixes for your phone, browser, or account. Save app resets and reinstalls for last.

Check whether X has an outage

Before changing settings, open the X Help Center and select Status in the footer. This leads to the developer platform, so its status alone does not establish whether the consumer app and website are working.

Check announcements from @Support for an outage matching your problem. If X acknowledges one, wait and retry. There's nothing to change on your device to resolve an outage.

Find out whether the problem follows your connection

Open x.com in a supported browser and compare it with the official X app. X supports versions of Edge, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and compatible WebKit or Chromium browsers released within the past year. Your browser must also support your operating system.

Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or try another Wi-Fi connection. If X works on only one connection, investigate connectivity or filtering on the failing network.

Disconnect your VPN through its app or device settings, then retry X. If access returns, contact your VPN provider.

If multiple devices cannot access other services either, disconnect power from the router and modem you control for 15 seconds.

Reconnect their power and let the connection recover.

If multiple devices remain offline, contact your internet provider or network administrator. If switching networks does not restore X, continue with the phone and browser fixes below.

Restore cellular access when Wi-Fi works

Disabled cellular access stops X from connecting on an iPhone or cellular iPad when you're away from Wi-Fi.

Open Settings > Cellular. On a cellular iPad, this section also appears as Cellular Data.

Turn on Cellular Data.

Enable X in the app list.

In Settings, turn off Airplane Mode when you need cellular connectivity.

If Wi-Fi is the connection that fails, open Settings > Wi-Fi and enable Wi-Fi.

Select your network.

Close a frozen app and restart your phone

On a Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and pause; on a Home-button iPhone, double-click Home. Find X and swipe its preview upward. Reopen X.

On Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > X > Force stop > OK. Reopen X. Other Android manufacturers use different labels.

If X still freezes on a Face ID iPhone, hold a volume button and the side button, then drag the power slider. Wait 30 seconds before holding the side button to turn the phone on. On iPhone SE 2 or 3 and iPhone 6, 7, or 8, use the side button alone to display the slider.

On Pixel 6 and later, including Fold, hold Power and Volume Up, then tap Restart. On Pixel 5a and earlier, hold Power for approximately 30 seconds or until the phone restarts.

Install the available updates

On iPhone or iPad, open App Store > your account picture or My Account > App Updates.

Tap Update beside X if an update is available.

On Android, open Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices.

Under Updates available, update X.

If X still fails, check for a phone software update. On iPhone or iPad, back up the device first.

Connect it to power and Wi-Fi.

Open Settings > General > Software Update.

Select Download and Install for the offered update.

On Pixel, open Settings > System > Software update and follow the displayed instructions.

If storage is full, review the recommendations and apps in Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.

On Pixel, remove unneeded files through Settings > Storage > Free up space > Browse.

For a stalled Google Play download, cancel the download.

Start it again.

If the download remains stuck, restart your phone. If updating succeeds but X still fails, clear its temporary storage next.

Clear X's temporary storage

On Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > X > Storage & cache > Clear cache. This removes temporary files.

On Samsung Galaxy, use Settings > Apps > X > Storage > Clear cache. Labels differ between software versions.

In X for iOS, open the profile menu > Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage. Under Storage, select Media storage > Clear media storage. Confirm the removal.

For built-in web storage, return to Data usage > Web storage. Choose Clear web page storage or Clear all web storage, then confirm. Offloading through Settings > General > iPhone Storage preserves documents and data, so it does not perform an app-data reset.

Troubleshoot X in your browser

If x.com fails while the app works, work through these browser checks.

  1. 1.Compare another supported browser or a private session. In desktop Chrome, select More > New Incognito window and sign in at x.com. In Safari on Mac, use File > New Private Window and open x.com.
  2. 2.Update the affected browser. In Chrome on Windows or Mac, use More > Help > About Google Chrome, then Relaunch if offered. In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and apply the available update. For Safari, install available macOS updates and restart the Mac.
  3. 3.Test extensions. In Chrome, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions; turn extensions off individually and retest X after each change. In Safari on Mac, deselect extensions under Safari > Settings > Extensions and retest. In Firefox, select the menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode… > Restart and open the temporary session, which disables extensions and other features.
  4. 4.Clear Chrome cookies and cache if the problem persists. Open More > Delete browsing data, choose a time range, and select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files. Select Delete data. Expect to sign in again on affected websites.
  5. 5.In Safari on Mac, remove X's website data through Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Select X's entries, choose Remove > Done, and reopen x.com.
  6. 6.In desktop Firefox, visit x.com and select the padlock or shield icon beside the address. Choose Clear cookies and site data, confirm with Clear or Remove as displayed, and reload X.

Reset or reinstall an app that still will not work

Use these fixes if X still fails in the app after restarting, updating, and clearing temporary storage. Before signing out, resetting app data, or reinstalling, save your drafts elsewhere and make sure you have your password and two-factor authentication recovery access, including a backup code.

On iPhone or iPad, sign out through X's profile menu > Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information > Log out.

Reopen X and select Sign in.

On Android, open X's profile/navigation icon > Settings and privacy > Your account > Account Information > Log out > OK.

Reopen X and select Log in.

If signing in again does not help, reset the app's data on Android. This erases local app data, including locally stored drafts; have your sign-in details ready.

On Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > X > Storage & cache. Select Clear storage or Clear data, then OK.

On Galaxy, use Settings > Apps > X > Storage > Clear data > Delete.

To reinstall on iPhone or iPad, hold X's icon and select Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Treat local app data as disposable before deleting.

Reinstall X from its official App Store listing.

On Galaxy, hold X on the Apps screen and select Uninstall. Some preloaded apps do not support removal.

Find X by X Corp. in Google Play Store and select Install.

Follow the login error or account notice

If X loads but won't let you sign in, follow the error on screen. For a forgotten password, select Forgot password?.

Supply your username, email, or eligible phone number.

Choose a recovery destination.

Enter the received code and select Submit.

Set a new password.

For a missing two-factor authentication code, enter an already-generated backup code at the verification prompt. If you're waiting for an SMS instead, allow at least two minutes before retrying.

For a temporary lock after repeated failed sign-ins, stop trying for approximately one hour.

If the lock persists, disable connected applications that are retrying. To revoke a connection, open Apps and sessions in your account settings, select the application, and choose Revoke access.

Wait another hour before trying x.com/login.

For incorrect-credentials errors on iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically.

On Android, open Settings > System > Date and time and enable Set time automatically. Manufacturer labels differ.

Under Time zone, enable Set automatically.

For an account lock or limitation notice, select Start.

Complete the requested verification or other required actions.

If an error identifies an exceeded action limit, stop that action until its time window expires. X recommends waiting a few hours after a posting-limit error.

If access still fails, open X's contact portal, choose Problems with account access or Locked and suspended account issues, and complete the displayed form. Choose Help with paid features for a paid-feature problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does X load normally but videos do not autoplay?

The app and website have independent autoplay settings. Open Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage. On iOS, select Video autoplay > On cellular or Wi-Fi; on Android, select Video autoplay > Mobile data & Wi-Fi; on the web, select Autoplay > On cellular or Wi-Fi. On Android, turn off X's Data saver when testing: it disables autoplay and reduces image quality.

Why am I not getting X notifications when the app still works?

In X, open Settings and privacy > Notifications > Preferences > Push notifications and enable the categories you want. On iPhone, also enable Settings > Notifications > X > Allow Notifications. On Android, enable notifications under Settings > Notifications > App notifications > X. If an iPhone Focus is silencing alerts, open Control Center and tap the active Focus icon to disable it. If Pixel Extreme Battery Saver has paused X, tap the paused app and select Unpause temporarily.

What should I do if X only fails on a work or school device?

Ask the administrator to review device, browser, or network restrictions affecting X. In managed Chrome, open chrome://policy to inspect applied policies. Contact the administrator before resetting managed network configurations or reinstalling an app whose removal is restricted.

How can I tell whether my Android phone supports the X app?

Open the official X listing by X Corp. in Google Play Store. Check the compatibility information and installation or update option shown for your device.
