WhatsApp voice messages usually fail for one of four reasons: microphone access is blocked, audio is routed somewhere else, playback volume is too low, or the app needs a reset. Start with the quickest checks, then move through the phone-specific fixes.
These fixes cover WhatsApp on Android, iPhone, iPad, Web, Windows, and Mac where voice messages are available.
Use the right voice message button
WhatsApp voice messages start from the Microphone button next to the text field in a chat. Open the chat, press and hold Microphone, speak, then release to send.
For hands-free recording, tap and hold Microphone, slide up to lock recording, speak, then tap Send. Use this voice-message control instead of the video-note control.
Allow WhatsApp to use the microphone
Use this fix when WhatsApp will not record, records silence, or keeps asking for microphone access.
On Android, open Settings, go to Apps, tap WhatsApp, choose Permissions, open Microphone, then select Allow.
If WhatsApp is not listed right away, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Microphone > Allow.
You can also use Android's permission manager. Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Permission manager > Microphone > WhatsApp > Allow.
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, then turn on WhatsApp.
Turn Android microphone access back on
The most common Android-specific cause is the system microphone switch being turned off for every app.
Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Privacy controls, then turn Microphone access on.
Reopen WhatsApp and record the voice message again.
On supported Android phones, swipe down twice from the top of the screen, then tap the Microphone tile to turn mic access back on.
If the tile is missing, tap Edit or Add, drag Microphone into Quick Settings, then turn it on.
Fix voice messages that play silently or too quietly
If received voice messages are hard to hear, play one and press the phone's Volume Up button while the message is playing. WhatsApp voice playback follows the active media volume.
If the phone is on vibrate or silent, switch it back to normal sound mode and try again. Keep the phone away from your head while listening, because WhatsApp can route playback to the earpiece when the proximity sensor thinks the phone is near your face.
A case, screen protector, your hand, or debris can cover the proximity sensor and make audio switch or cut out. Remove the obstruction, clean the area, then replay the message.
Disconnect Bluetooth and close recording apps
This fixes WhatsApp audio going to the wrong microphone, speaker, earbuds, car system, or another app.
Turn off or disconnect Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, watches, car audio, and speakers.
Reopen WhatsApp.
Test the same voice message again.
Close apps that record calls, voice notes, meetings, camera audio, screen recordings, or wake-word audio.
Force quit WhatsApp.
Open WhatsApp again and record a fresh voice message.
Restart WhatsApp and your phone
Temporary app or audio-session glitches can stop voice messages even when permissions are correct. On Android, close WhatsApp from Recents, reopen it, and test recording again.
If that does not help, hold Power for about 30 seconds or until the phone restarts, or tap Restart when it appears. On iPhone X or later, press and hold either volume button and the side button, drag the power-off slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button to turn it back on.
On iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, and iPhone SE 2nd or 3rd generation, hold the side button, drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button again. If the phone is frozen, use the force-restart button sequence for your model.
Update WhatsApp or clear Android cache
Open Google Play Store.
Tap your profile icon.
Go to Manage apps & devices.
Under Updates available, update WhatsApp or choose Update all.
On iPhone or iPad, open App Store, tap the My Account button or your photo, then use App Updates to update WhatsApp.
On Android, clear the app cache from Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage or Storage & cache > Clear cache.
iPhone does not have a current WhatsApp-only cache button. Use updating, backup, reinstall, or WhatsApp Support instead.
Check iPhone restrictions and microphone hardware
The most common iPhone-specific cause after permissions are enabled is either a locked privacy setting or a blocked microphone opening.
If the WhatsApp microphone toggle is missing or locked, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, then under Privacy, tap Microphone and choose Allow Changes.
For a child's device in Family Sharing, go to Settings > Screen Time, tap the child's name under Family, then open Content & Privacy Restrictions > Privacy > Microphone > Allow Changes.
Remove screen protectors, films, and cases from the iPhone, then clear debris from the microphone openings.
Open Voice Memos, tap Record, speak at the bottom of the phone, stop the recording, and play it back.
If Voice Memos sounds unclear or WhatsApp still records poor audio after microphone permission is enabled, get the iPhone serviced.
Reinstall WhatsApp as a last resort
This fixes deeper app-data problems, but it can remove local WhatsApp data if you do not back up first.
Open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
Tap Back Up or Back up now.
On Android, open Google Play Store > your profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage > WhatsApp > Uninstall.
On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold WhatsApp, then tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete.
Install WhatsApp Messenger again from the official WhatsApp download page, App Store, or Google Play.
Verify your phone number.
Restore your backup when prompted.
On a school, work, or family-managed device, ask the administrator or parent to allow microphone access or unblock WhatsApp. Managed devices and browsers can prevent you from changing those privacy settings yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does WhatsApp record a blank voice message?
WhatsApp usually records silence when microphone permission is blocked, Android microphone access is off, another app is using the mic, Bluetooth is capturing audio, or the phone microphone is blocked.
Why can I hear other audio but not WhatsApp voice messages?
Play the voice message and raise the media volume while it is playing. Also turn off silent or vibrate mode, disconnect Bluetooth devices, and keep the proximity sensor uncovered so playback does not switch to the earpiece.
Can I clear WhatsApp cache on iPhone to fix voice messages?
No supported WhatsApp-only cache clear option exists on iPhone. Update WhatsApp, back up chats, delete and reinstall the app, or contact WhatsApp Support instead.
What should I do if voice-message read receipts look wrong?
Go to WhatsApp Settings > Privacy > Read Receipts and turn it on. The recipient also needs read receipts on, or you may not see two blue check marks next to sent messages. Voice messages work differently: turning off Read Receipts does not disable play receipts, so the microphone icon still turns blue once the recipient plays your voice message.
