A stream that keeps buffering, an app that refuses to open, and a login screen that rejects you need different fixes. Start by checking whether the failure affects Twitch itself, your connection, or one device. Then use the matching browser, phone, TV, or account steps below to get back to watching.

Check whether Twitch is down or just one stream is failing

When Twitch suddenly stops loading or several streams fail, check for an outage before changing your device settings.

Open Twitch Status and check the affected services and incident history for a problem matching yours.

If there is a matching incident, follow its updates and retry after recovery.

Otherwise, reload the webpage or reopen the app.

Try another live channel. A broadcaster-side failure is one explanation for a problem confined to a single stream.

Open another website to check whether the connection works beyond Twitch.

Test Twitch on another device to narrow the failure to one device or a shared connection.

When streams buffer or the connection drops

A connection that cannot sustain video playback leaves Twitch buffering; connection trouble also belongs on the checklist for error 2000.

In a player with quality controls, open the Settings gear > Quality > Auto.

For persistent home-network problems, disconnect your modem and router from power for 30 seconds.

Reconnect their power.

Retry Twitch once the connection has recovered.

Test another Wi-Fi connection, or switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data. Check your plan for cellular charges.

If you use a VPN or another traffic-routing app, disconnect it through that app’s controls.

Reopen Twitch to test the connection.

In Safari on a Mac using iCloud Private Relay, select View > Reload and Show IP Address while on Twitch.

If buffering continues, open the player’s Settings gear > Advanced and turn off Low Latency. Use this step only in players displaying those controls; they are not present in every mobile or TV app.

If playback fails only over cellular data, ask your carrier whether your plan limits video speed or resolution.

Use Wi-Fi or select a lower available quality when your allowance cannot sustain the stream.

Give your desktop browser a clean test

Follow this sequence when Twitch fails in your browser but works on another device.

  1. 1.Update your browser. Twitch supports the latest two versions of Chrome and Firefox, plus the latest Edge, Safari, Opera, and Opera GX. In Chrome, open More > Help > About Google Chrome, let it check, and select Relaunch if offered. For Linux installations managed through a package manager, update there; ChromeOS updates with the operating system.
  2. 2.Disable extensions, particularly ad blockers and developer extensions. In Chrome, use More > Extensions > Manage extensions. In Safari, use Safari > Settings > Extensions and deselect them.
  3. 3.In Chrome, clear cache and cookies through More > Delete browsing data. Choose All time, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Delete data. Be prepared to sign in again after removing cookies.
  4. 4.For Firefox, select Twitch’s address-bar padlock or shield > Clear cookies and site data. For Safari, open Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, select Twitch, then choose Remove and Done. Be prepared to sign in again.
  5. 5.Restart the browser and test the same stream.
  6. 6.If playback works, re-enable extensions individually and test after each one to identify the conflict.

If the Twitch phone app freezes or will not open

Start by closing the unresponsive app. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the app switcher. On a Home-button model, double-click the Home button instead.

Find Twitch and swipe its preview upward.

Reopen Twitch.

On Android, open your phone’s Settings and find its application-management screen.

Select Twitch and use the force-stop control. The exact menu path varies by manufacturer.

Reopen the app.

If reopening fails, restart your phone. On a Face ID iPhone, hold a volume button and the side button to reach the power-off slider. On compatible Home-button iPhones, hold the side button instead.

Drag the power-off slider.

Wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button to restart.

On Android, use your device’s Restart control.

Check Twitch for updates in the App Store.

On Android with Google Play, open the Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available and select Update beside Twitch.

On a Samsung Galaxy, clear Twitch’s cache through Settings > Apps > Twitch > Storage > Clear cache.

Reopen Twitch after clearing the cache.

If Twitch works on Wi-Fi but not cellular data on an iPhone, open Settings > Cellular and enable Cellular Data. On iPad, use the Cellular Data menu where that label appears.

Enable Twitch’s switch in the app list.

If closing, restarting, and updating fail, delete Twitch. Deletion carries a risk of losing locally stored app data. On Galaxy’s Apps screen, touch and hold Twitch and select Uninstall.

Reinstall Twitch from its official App Store listing or Google Play listing.

If the Android app still fails, try the same channel at twitch.tv in your browser.

TV app repairs depend on the device

Use these fixes when Twitch fails on your TV but plays on your phone or computer. Follow the path for your TV platform.

On Fire TV, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Twitch > Clear Cache.

If clearing the cache fails, select Clear Data on that same screen.

Reopen Twitch.

Sign in again.

On Google TV, select Settings > System > Restart.

Check for updates through Settings > System > About > System update > Check for update.

For a continuing Google TV app problem, select Settings > Apps > See all apps > Twitch > Clear data. This removes local app data.

Reopen Twitch.

Sign in again.

On a Samsung TV that supports Twitch, hold the remote’s Power button until the TV turns off and back on, approximately five seconds. Alternatively, unplug the TV for 30 seconds.

If the Samsung app still fails, check for firmware updates through Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now. Menu presentation varies by model.

For a missing Cast receiver, put the casting device and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network.

Restart the receiver if it still does not appear.

Match browser settings to the playback error

For error 3000 in Chrome, open Settings > System and turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.

Restart Chrome.

Test playback again.

Update your GPU drivers if the decoding failure persists.

For DRM error 7005, open Chrome’s Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Protected content IDs and allow protected playback.

On Windows and ChromeOS, also allow protected-content identifiers where that control is available.

If JavaScript is blocked, open Chrome’s Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript and select Sites can use JavaScript.

Reload Twitch.

For unavailable 1440p playback, sign in to Twitch first.

Open the player’s Settings > Quality to read the availability explanation. Access depends on region, login, hardware, browser, and broadcaster configuration.

Update your browser before retrying 1440p.

On compatible hardware in Chrome, enable Settings > System > Use graphics acceleration when available. The 1440p guidance calls for acceleration on; the error 3000 diagnostic test calls for it off.

Choose a lower available resolution or another device if 1440p still cannot play.

Match the acceleration setting to the symptom instead of treating either position as a universal Twitch fix.

Recover access when login is the problem

Choose the step matching the password or verification code blocking your login.

For a forgotten password, select Trouble Logging In on the mobile login screen.

Enter your email or phone and username.

Select Send my password reset link.

Complete verification. A password reset revokes existing third-party credentials and invalidates your stream key.

For a missing new-device email code, check the correct inbox and spam folder.

Wait up to five minutes.

Then select Resend code.

Add [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] to your safe senders list.

For a missing two-factor SMS code, enter the Twitch code from an authenticator you already configured.

Otherwise, check your mobile signal, blocked senders, and registered number.

Allow delivery time before retrying.

If you lost access to your 2FA phone number, open Twitch’s phone-number recovery page.

Follow its link to Authy’s Phone Change Form.

Provide your old and new numbers.

Complete identity verification. This route also applies to Twitch accounts using another authenticator.

Chat and rewards have their own requirements

These checks address chat, Drops, and subscription options when playback already works.

Read the chat restriction message.

Complete the requested email or phone verification, satisfy the stated channel requirement, or wait out the timeout.

Submit an Unban Request when the channel offers it.

To send chat from a supported TV or console app, scan its displayed chat QR code with a second device. The living-room app’s on-screen chat is read-only.

Type your message on the second device.

For Drops, watch a participating live stream through desktop web or the Twitch mobile app. TV and console apps do not support Drops.

Open Drops Inventory.

Claim your eligible rewards there.

Use the web to claim rewards unavailable through the iOS app.

For higher subscription tiers or a Prime subscription unavailable in the iOS app, open subs.twitch.tv in your browser.

Send Twitch the details if nothing works

For a persistent desktop playback failure, open the player’s Settings gear and select Report Playback Issue.

On Apple TV, open the video overlay’s Settings > Report Playback Issues.

Choose the issue.

Enter the steps that reproduce the failure in Description.

Select Send.

If playback reporting does not resolve the problem, use Contact Support in Twitch Help. Include your browser and version, operating system, steps that reproduce the failure, and screenshots. Add whether another channel, device, or network worked so support can understand the scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use the old Twitch desktop app or Nintendo Switch app?

No. Twitch deprecated its Windows and Mac desktop app on April 30, 2022; use a supported browser. The Nintendo Switch app was discontinued on January 31, 2024 and can no longer be used, downloaded, or redownloaded. Use another supported device.

Why can’t I install the current Twitch app on my older iPhone?

The current Twitch App Store listing requires iOS 16.4 or later, or iPadOS 16.4 or later on iPad. Install the newest compatible operating system for your device. A device that cannot meet the requirement cannot run the current app.

Can I turn off Twitch’s new-device verification?

No. Twitch’s new-device and location verification cannot be disabled. Complete the security check to finish that login.

Should I factory-reset my TV if only Twitch fails?

Start with app and connection repairs. Google TV’s factory reset erases device data. Reserve it for persistent device-wide problems after less disruptive fixes.
