You click a video and get “YouTube refused to connect” instead. The fix depends on whether the error fills your browser tab or appears inside a video on another website. Start with the matching checks below, then work through the browser, connection, or embed settings responsible.
Open the video directly on YouTube
If the error appears inside a video on another website, opening it on YouTube gives you another way to watch. It leaves the website’s player unchanged.
Select Watch on YouTube when the player offers it.
For an age-restricted embedded video, follow the redirect to YouTube.
If YouTube asks you to sign in, sign in with the appropriate Google Account. This addresses content-access restrictions; it does not repair a refused network connection.
If the video plays on YouTube but fails on the original page, move to the embedded-player checks below. An incorrect embed address or missing player identification needs the website maintainer’s attention. Only the video owner can change its embedding permission.
When the whole page refuses to load
These checks address a mistyped URL and isolate broader loading failures.
Correct any typo in the browser’s address bar.
Select Reload in Chrome. In Safari on Mac, use View > Reload Page.
Open another website to check whether the failure affects YouTube alone.
Open the same YouTube page in another browser or on another device to compare access.
On iPhone or iPad, try the page using cellular data instead of Wi-Fi, or another Wi-Fi network. If access changes with the connection, use the network checks below.
During a YouTube service interruption, try again later.
Rule out browser extensions
Use these tests when the page fails in one browser but works elsewhere.
- 1.In desktop Chrome, open More > New Incognito window and try YouTube. Incognito blocks third-party cookies by default, so an embed failing here does not rule out a cookie problem.
- 2.In your regular Chrome window, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Disable extensions and retry the affected page.
- 3.If access returns, re-enable extensions individually and test after each one. Select Remove for the extension that causes the failure.
- 4.In Safari on Mac, open Safari > Settings > Extensions. Deselect extensions, then test the page again.
- 5.In Firefox, open Menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode… > Restart > Open. Test the page there. This mode temporarily disables extensions, hardware acceleration, and other customizations, so success does not identify an extension as the sole cause.
Clear affected site data and check playback permissions
In desktop Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions.
Search for YouTube or the website hosting the video.
Delete that site’s stored data using Delete > Delete. Clearing cookies removes affected website sessions, so expect to sign in again.
For a broader Chrome cleanup, open More > Delete browsing data.
Set the time range to All time.
Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
Select Delete data.
To test whether cookie blocking breaks an embed, select the address-bar Third-party cookies blocked icon on the affected page.
Temporarily turn on Third-party cookies.
Close the dialog to reload the page.
For Chrome playback problems, enable Sites can use Javascript under Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Javascript. YouTube playback requires JavaScript.
Select Reload to test the change.
In Safari on Mac, open File > New Private Window.
Open the affected page in that window to test it.
If it works, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
Select the affected site.
Choose Remove.
Select Done.
In Safari on iPhone or iPad, clear browsing data through Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data > Clear History.
For Safari playback problems on iPhone or iPad, turn on JavaScript under Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced.
Test the affected page after each change so you can stop once it works.
If the failure follows your network
Use these checks when YouTube fails across browsers or devices on the same connection. Public Wi-Fi sign-in, filtering, and home-network failures each need a different fix.
On hotel, café, or airport Wi-Fi, select Connect if Chrome displays a network sign-in prompt.
If the portal does not open, visit an HTTP webpage to trigger it.
Complete the network’s sign-in.
For a home-network connection failure, turn off your computer.
Unplug the modem and router from power.
Wait about one minute.
Reconnect the modem and allow it to reconnect.
Reconnect the router and allow it to reconnect.
Restart your computer. This procedure cycles the equipment’s power; leave the factory-reset button alone.
On iPhone or iPad with an active VPN, disconnect it using the VPN’s own settings. The control depends on the VPN app.
Open the affected page again to compare access.
In Safari on Mac with iCloud Private Relay enabled for the network, select View > Reload and Show IP Address to test without Private Relay.
If firewall or antivirus software blocks YouTube or your browser, ask the software’s owner to correct the responsible rule.
On a work or school connection, ask your administrator to check the restriction and allow youtube.com, plus youtube-nocookie.com for privacy-enhanced embeds. These domains also need access through home filtering.
Give a persistent browser problem a fresh start
Close unused Chrome tabs and unwanted tasks to free memory.
Quit Chrome through More > Exit on Windows, or Chrome > Quit Google Chrome on Mac.
Reopen Chrome.
To check for Chrome updates on Windows or Mac, open More > Help > About Google Chrome.
Wait for the update check to finish.
Select Relaunch when offered. On Linux, Chrome updates use the package manager; on Chromebooks, they arrive through ChromeOS updates.
To update Safari on Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
Install the offered updates.
In Microsoft Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
Apply any available update.
If the failure remains specific to Chrome, reset it through Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings. On Windows, Google also lists the first entry as Reset and cleanup; if your Settings menu shows that label instead, select it and continue with the same steps. Saved bookmarks and passwords remain.
Save the reset for browser-specific failures, since it cannot correct an invalid embed address on someone else’s website.
Fix the embed if you own the website or video
For a failure isolated to an embedded player, choose the action that matches your role and the error.
Regenerate the embed on a computer by opening the video on YouTube and selecting SHARE > Embed.
Copy the supplied HTML into your website’s HTML or embed field.
If editing the iframe yourself, set its src to https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID, replacing VIDEO_ID with the video’s ID. Use this supported embed format instead of an ordinary watch-page URL.
For your own video with embedding disabled, open YouTube Studio > Content > the video’s Details > SHOW MORE.
Enable Allow embedding.
Then select SAVE.
For error 153, have the website maintainer stop suppressing the HTTP Referer header. YouTube recommends Referrer-Policy: strict-origin-when-cross-origin.
Embedded-player windows opened through window.open must not use noreferrer.
For an embedded playlist, remove or replace private or age-restricted videos and videos whose owners disabled embedding. Use public videos with embedding enabled.
If the failure occurs inside a third-party app, report it to the app developer. The developer needs to supply the required embedded-player identification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does youtube-nocookie.com fix YouTube refused to connect?
YouTube supports it for privacy-enhanced embedding, but changing the domain does not guarantee a connection repair. Use https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/VIDEO_ID with the correct video ID, and allow that domain through network filtering.
Where do I check Chrome Secure DNS for a DNS failure?
On desktop Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Security > Advanced > Use secure DNS. Check the selected provider, then test another provider or temporarily turn the setting off. Availability is restricted on managed devices or devices with parental controls.
What identification fixes are available to third-party app developers?
Supported options depend on the embedding surface. WebViews can supply a base URL or Referer header. Android Custom Tabs use Intent.EXTRA_REFERRER, while iOS SFSafariViewController uses the origin player parameter.
How do I report a website that still fails in Safari?
In Safari 26 or later on Mac, reload the page, then open Page Menu > Report a Website Issue. Describe the failure and select Report. This submits the issue; it does not immediately repair the page.
