Google’s “This phone number cannot be used for verification” error stops you at the phone-verification prompt. Google directs you to use another number, including a friend’s or family member’s number with their permission. Start with that fix, then use the options below for optional signup fields, missing codes, or trouble signing into an existing account.
Try another phone number first
For this exact error, Google directs you to replace the rejected number.
- 1.Choose another phone number you can use for verification, getting the owner’s permission first if it belongs to a friend or family member.
- 2.Replace the rejected number at Google’s phone-verification prompt.
- 3.Complete the verification instructions displayed for the replacement number.
Switch to a number from a different carrier
Google also recommends a different carrier’s number for this rejection.
Choose another number served by a different carrier, with the owner’s permission if you’re borrowing it. Google’s instructions do not require you to port your rejected number or buy a new SIM.
Enter that number at the verification prompt.
Complete the verification Google offers. A replacement number is not guaranteed to be accepted.
Leave optional phone information blank during signup
Some Google Account signup forms make phone information optional. On those forms, leave the phone field blank.
Select Next to continue signup.
This option ends where mandatory phone verification begins. An optional field elsewhere in signup does not let you bypass a required challenge, and Google’s help pages document no Skip button for it.
Request a call when the verification text never arrives
Wait a few minutes for the verification text after Google accepts your number. This addresses a delayed code; it does not fix rejection of the number.
If the verification screen offers a phone call, select that option.
Answer the call to receive your verification code.
Enter the code at the verification prompt.
Google also permits a home phone for call verification, but switching to a call does not override a rejected number.
Use an existing sign-in method for an account you already own
Previously configured methods address an existing account’s 2-Step Verification challenge, without bypassing phone verification for new accounts.
Try signing in on a device where you previously selected Don’t ask again on this computer. This offers a route to sign in without another second step, though access is not guaranteed.
When Google offers a prompt on your already signed-in phone, tap Yes for your own sign-in.
Complete any additional confirmation requested by the prompt.
If the challenge offers your configured authenticator, enter its current code. Installing an authenticator after you’re locked out does not connect it to the account.
If Google offers a previously registered alternate number, select it to receive a verification text or call. The available choices depend on your account and the challenge.
Enter the code received at that alternate number.
Sign in with a saved backup code
An unused backup code generated before you lost access provides another route through 2-Step Verification.
- 1.At the sign-in verification step, select Try another way.
- 2.Select Enter one of your 8-digit backup codes.
- 3.Enter an unused code from your saved backup codes to continue signing in.
Recover your account when sign-in options run out
Answer the ownership questions at Google’s account recovery page. This is the route for regaining an existing Google Account when you cannot complete sign-in verification.
Complete the recovery verification Google offers. Recovery uses previously established options, such as a recovery email; you cannot add those options while locked out.
Reset your password if prompted.
After access returns, review your recovery information under Google Account > Security & sign-in. Keeping Recovery phone and Recovery email up to date gives you recovery options for future sign-in problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Google Accounts can use the same phone number?
Google does not publish a numerical account-per-number limit in its guidance for this error.
Will waiting 24 or 48 hours make my number work again?
Google’s guidance for this error gives no waiting period, such as 24 or 48 hours, that makes a rejected number eligible. It directs you to use a different number instead.
Does this error mean my Google Account is disabled?
No. The phone-number error alone does not establish that your account is disabled. If Google separately displays an account-disabled explanation when you sign in through a browser, select Start Appeal and follow the instructions.
Can I create a Google Account with my existing email instead?
Yes. On Google’s sign-in page, choose Create account > For my personal use. Enter your details. Select Use your existing email. Enter your existing email address. Select Next. Verify the email code and finish setup. This creates a Google Account without a Gmail inbox and does not exempt you from a separate mandatory phone challenge.
