You press the left mouse button and nothing useful happens. Apps do not open, text will not select, double-clicks fail, or the right button suddenly behaves like the main click. Start with the fixes that restore control fastest, then move through settings, hardware, Bluetooth, drivers, and software conflicts using current official paths.
1. Get a working click without the left button
Turn on a keyboard or accessibility click method first if you cannot click well enough to open settings. This gives you enough control to finish the real repair.
- On Windows, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Mouse > Mouse keys and turn it On. Press / to select the left mouse button, move the pointer with the numeric keypad, and press 5 to click. You can also press Left Alt + Left Shift + Num Lock to toggle Mouse Keys.
- On macOS, turn on VoiceOver first with Command-F5 (or open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver), then use its commands, where VO is the VoiceOver modifier (Control-Option or Caps Lock by default). Navigate with VO + Left Arrow or VO + Right Arrow, press VO-Space bar to click, and press VO-Space bar-Space bar to double-click.
- On Chromebook, open Settings > Accessibility > Cursor and touchpad > Mouse keys and turn it on. Press / for the left mouse button, then press i or numeric keypad 5 to click.
- On Chromebook, you can also use automatic clicks. Open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse and touchpad, turn on Automatically click when the mouse cursor stops, choose Left-click from the automatic-click menu, then point at the item you want.
2. Put the main click back on the left
- 1.Use this fix when right-click opens items, the left side opens shortcut menus, or every click feels reversed.
- 2.On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- 3.Set Primary mouse button to Left.
On a Mac with Magic Mouse, open System Settings > Mouse, then set Secondary click to the right-side option or turn secondary click off. On iPad, open Settings > General > Trackpad & Mouse > Secondary Click, then choose the side used for secondary click so the other side stays the normal click.
On Chromebook, open Device settings > Mouse > Customize mouse buttons, then turn off Swap your left and right mouse buttons. Do not rely on old Windows 10 instructions as the current path; Windows 10 general support ended on October 14, 2025.
3. Check power, dirt, and the receiver
A button can look dead when the mouse is low on power, blocked by dirt, or losing its USB receiver connection.
- 1.Fully charge the mouse or replace its batteries.
- 2.Check for dirt blocking the buttons or sensor.
- 3.For a USB wireless receiver, unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- 4.If the mouse or receiver has a Reset button, press it.
For Apple mice and trackpads, power the device off before cleaning. If it uses removable batteries, remove them; if it is wired, unplug it. Clean the outside with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water, and keep moisture out of openings.
4. Reconnect the Bluetooth mouse
- When a Bluetooth mouse shows as connected but clicks are unreliable, remove the pairing and add it again.
- On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, choose More options for the mouse, select Remove device, then choose Yes. Pair it again from Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device.
- On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, make sure Bluetooth is on, hold the pointer over the mouse, and choose Connect. To forget and pair it again, Control-click the device name, choose Forget, then reconnect it. For Magic Mouse, slide the switch off until green is not visible, slide it back on, or connect it to the Mac with an Apple cable, wait 1 minute, and disconnect it.
- On Chromebook, open Settings > Bluetooth, select the mouse, choose Forget, then use Pair new device or Connect when it appears. You can also turn Bluetooth off and back on from quick settings.
5. Tune double-clicks, dragging, and touchpad clicks
If single-click works but double-clicking, dragging, highlighting, or touchpad clicking fails, adjust click behavior next.
- For Windows double-clicks, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings > Buttons, then adjust Double-click speed.
- For Windows drag problems, stay on the Buttons tab and turn on ClickLock so you can drag or highlight without holding the physical button down.
- For Mac double-clicks, open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control, then adjust Double-click speed.
- For Windows laptop touchpads, use Windows Update for touchpad drivers, or open Device Manager, find the touchpad under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices, then use Update driver or Uninstall device and restart.
6. Reset mouse apps and button mappings
- 1.Mouse utilities can change what the left button does. If the issue started after editing profiles, macros, or accessory settings, restore the button assignment.
- 2.For Microsoft-branded mice, open Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, select the connected mouse, and review the left-click, right-click, middle-click, and button assignments.
- 3.For Logitech mice supported by Logi Options+, open Logi Options+, select the mouse, open the device or settings menu, then reset the mouse to factory/default settings or restore button assignments.
- 4.For Razer mice, launch Razer Synapse 4, select your mouse from DASHBOARD, select the affected button, choose DEFAULT, then choose SAVE.
- 5.If the utility itself is causing the problem on Windows, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app, choose More, then select Uninstall.
- 6.On macOS, use the app's Uninstall or Uninstaller app when it has one. Otherwise open Finder > Applications, select the app, then choose File > Move to Trash.
Skip Logitech Connection Utility for current supported Logitech devices. Logitech says that utility is no longer supported or maintained, and supported devices should use Logi Options+ instead.
7. Update or reinstall the driver
Use driver and system updates after settings, hardware, Bluetooth, and remapping checks are done.
On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, select listed driver updates, choose Download and install, then restart. You can also right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Mice and other pointing devices or Human Interface Devices, right-click the mouse, then choose Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.
To reinstall the Windows mouse driver, open Device Manager, right-click the mouse, choose Uninstall device, select Uninstall, then restart by right-clicking Start and choosing Shut down or sign out > Restart. Windows reinstalls detected device drivers after the restart.
On Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update, then choose Update, Upgrade, or Restart Now when offered. On Chromebook, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates, then select Restart when an update notification appears.
8. Isolate conflicts and undo recent changes
- When the left button fails after a new app, extension, update, or mouse tool, test for a software conflict and remove the change.
- On Windows, start in Safe Mode with Networking from the sign-in screen by holding Shift while selecting Power > Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart > F5.
- On Windows, use a clean boot from System Configuration. Sign in as administrator, search for msconfig, open System Configuration, select Services, turn on Hide all Microsoft services, then isolate the non-Microsoft service or startup app causing the problem.
- On Windows, roll back a recent system change from Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, or press Windows logo key + R, type rstrui.exe, press Enter, choose Next, and select a restore point.
- On Windows, if the problem began immediately after an update, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, select the update, then choose Uninstall.
- On Mac, start in Safe Mode. On Apple silicon, choose Apple menu > Shut Down, wait until the Mac is off, hold the power button until startup options appear, select a volume, hold Shift, then choose Continue in Safe Mode. On an Intel Mac, restart and hold Shift.
- On Chromebook, uninstall a suspicious app from Launcher by right-clicking the app and choosing Uninstall or Remove from Chrome. You can also open Settings > System preferences > Safety reset > Done to reset input settings and disable extensions without deleting local data or apps.
For a work or school computer, stop when device installation, updates, or reset controls are blocked. Managed Windows and ChromeOS devices can require administrator help before a mouse, driver, update, or reset can be changed.
9. Save resets for the last step
Use resets after settings, cleaning, reconnection, updates, and app cleanup fail. On Chromebook, a hardware reset restarts hardware such as the keyboard and touchpad, and it might delete files in Downloads.
- 1.Turn off the Chromebook.
- 2.Press and hold Refresh.
- 3.Tap Power.
- 4.Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.
ChromeOS also has a factory reset called Powerwash. Sign out, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r, choose Restart, then choose Powerwash > Continue and follow the prompts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does right-click work but left-click does not?
The primary and secondary buttons are swapped, or a mouse utility has remapped the button. Set the primary button back to Left, then review Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, Logi Options+, or Razer Synapse 4 if you use one of those tools.
How do I fix it when I cannot click anything?
Turn on a keyboard click method first. Windows and ChromeOS have Mouse Keys, macOS has VoiceOver click commands, and ChromeOS also has automatic clicks for selecting items without pressing the mouse button.
Why does single-click work but double-click does not?
The double-click speed setting is the first fix. Adjust Double-click speed in Windows Mouse Properties or macOS Pointer Control before replacing the mouse.
Should I use Logitech Connection Utility to fix this?
No for current supported Logitech devices. Logitech says Connection Utility is no longer supported or maintained; use Logi Options+ for supported Logitech mice.
When is the mouse hardware probably the problem?
Treat the hardware as the likely fault after you restore the primary button setting, clean and reconnect the mouse, reset button mappings, update or reinstall drivers, and confirm the issue remains.
