What the error means for your next move
Your computer cannot boot from the intended operating system drive. The problem involves the boot configuration, Windows startup files, or storage hardware. Reinstalling Windows will not fix a disconnected or failed SSD.
Before changing firmware settings, retrieve your BitLocker recovery key from your Microsoft account on another device. Match the displayed key ID before entering the 48-digit key when recovery requests it. A saved printout or USB key file also works.
For a work or school computer, contact IT for the recovery key and the organization’s BIOS update or recovery procedure. Follow that process before changing firmware or starting recovery.
Disconnect accessories and reset the power
Turn off the computer.
Disconnect AC power.
Remove any disc.
Remove any memory card.
Unplug nonessential USB devices and external drives.
For an HP notebook, check your model’s power-reset instructions for removable-battery requirements or special button combinations.

To test a device for one startup, turn on the computer while repeatedly pressing Esc, then press F9 for Boot Device Options. Select the intended bootable internal drive and press Enter. A successful start here does not change the saved boot order.
Keep the normal UEFI configuration for a standard Windows 11 installation, which does not support Legacy BIOS mode. HP says newer models released after 2020 no longer support Legacy Support, despite older guides recommending it. Disable Secure Boot only to address a confirmed compatibility problem with trusted hardware or media.
Test the SSD or hard drive before repairing Windows
Run HP’s preboot storage tests to check whether the drive needs service.

A failed storage test means it’s time for hardware service. Use the diagnostic’s QR code or support link to contact HP with the failure ID and product number. HP directs drive replacement after a confirmed storage-test failure; the replacement also needs an operating system restored or installed.
If diagnostics are missing, open HP’s diagnostics download page on another working PC and select Download under HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. Install it on a blank USB, then connect that USB to the affected computer. Enter diagnostics again with F2 and run the storage tests; the separate Windows edition requires Windows to start.
A drive that remains undetected needs its storage connection or hardware examined. Follow your exact model’s service instructions for reseating a removable drive; soldered storage cannot be reseated. If the error followed a hardware change, restore the original configuration using those instructions, or have a technician handle the disassembly.
If the drive passes its tests and remains accessible, move on to Windows startup repair. Recovery tools cannot make an undetected drive accessible, so resolve that storage problem before resetting or reinstalling Windows.
Repair Windows when the drive is accessible
Startup Repair addresses damaged startup files, boot configuration data, and related Windows configuration problems.
Press F11 at startup to open recovery on an HP computer with usable recovery support.
If internal recovery will not load, obtain Windows installation media matching your computer’s processor architecture using another working PC.
