You tap a story and Instagram says it is no longer available, even though you just saw it in the tray, a DM, or a notification. In most cases, the story expired, was deleted, or your app is holding an old story link. Start with the fastest checks, then move through privacy, app, browser, and reporting fixes.

Check whether the story is gone

Most often, Story no longer available means the story expired after 24 hours or the poster deleted it.

Open the poster's profile and look for the active story ring around their profile photo.

If the ring is gone, check the Story Highlights below the bio. Stories disappear from Feed, profile, and Direct after 24 hours unless the poster adds them to a Highlight.

When the story is not in Story Highlights, viewers cannot bring it back. Ask the poster to repost it or add it to a Highlight from their archive.

Refresh the stale story link

A story tray, notification, or DM preview can point to a story Instagram has already moved past. Start in Home, pull down on Feed to refresh, then tap the story again from the refreshed tray.

If you opened the story from a notification, leave that notification path. Go directly to the poster's profile and tap the live story ring there.

For a story shared in Direct, open the poster's profile instead of using the preview. If the profile has no ring and no matching Highlight, the story expired or was removed.

Rule out privacy and audience limits

This applies when other people can view the story but you cannot, or when the story disappeared only for your account.

If the account is private, open the profile and tap Follow, then wait for approval. Only approved followers can view a private account's profile, stories, and posts.

Some story access limits are controlled only by the poster. If they hid their story from you, shared it only to Close Friends, or blocked your account, your account cannot override that setting.

Contact the poster outside that story view. They can unhide you, add you to Close Friends, unblock you, repost the story, or add it to a Highlight.

Close Instagram and reopen it

This fixes a frozen or stale Instagram app session.

On iPhone X and later, swipe up from the bottom of the Home Screen and pause in the middle.

Swipe right or left until you find Instagram.

Swipe up on Instagram's preview to close it.

Reopen Instagram and try the story again from the poster's profile.

On iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and earlier, double-click the Home button.

Find Instagram, swipe up on its preview, then reopen it.

On Android, open Settings, then Apps or Applications.

Choose Instagram, tap Force stop, then reopen Instagram.

Update Instagram and your phone software

Use these update paths when the story is live but Instagram keeps failing to load Stories.

  1. 1.On iPhone or iPad, open App Store, tap your My Account button or profile photo, go to App Updates, then tap Update next to Instagram or Update All.
  2. 2.On Android, open Google Play Store, tap the profile icon, choose Manage apps & device, tap See details under Updates available, then tap Update next to Instagram.
  3. 3.If the app is current on iPhone or iPad, update the device software: open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update and install any available update.
  4. 4.If Instagram remains broken on Android, open Settings, then System, Advanced, and System update. On some devices, use About phone or About tablet, then Software update.
  5. 5.Turn on automatic updates to avoid repeat app-version issues. On iPhone, use Settings, Apps, App Store, then App Updates; on Android, use Google Play, your profile picture, Manage apps & device, Manage, Instagram, More, then Enable auto update.

Clear broken local app data

This fixes bad cached Instagram data on Android, and a full reinstall gives iPhone and iPad the clean app copy route.

On Android, open Settings, then Apps or Applications.

Choose Instagram.

Open Storage or Storage & cache.

Tap Clear cache.

Reopen Instagram and try the story again.

If cache clearing does not fix it, return to the same screen and tap Clear storage or Clear data.

Sign back in afterward. Clear storage permanently deletes local app data.

On iPhone or iPad, delete Instagram, redownload it from the App Store, sign in again, and check whether Stories load normally.

Try Instagram on the web

Open a browser and go to instagram.com, then log in to your account. Use the Stories tray or open the poster's profile and try the story or Highlight there.

If Instagram web works while the app fails, treat the issue as an app or device problem and continue with update, cache, restart, or reinstall steps. If web shows the same unavailable message, the story is expired, deleted, hidden from you, private, blocked, Close Friends only, or removed.

For stale Instagram web behavior in Chrome, use More, Delete browsing data, choose a time range, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then choose Delete data. In Safari on iPhone, use Settings, Apps, Safari, Clear History and Website Data, choose a timeframe, then tap Clear History.

Ask the poster to restore or reshare it

The most common cause on the poster's side is that the story expired, was deleted, or was limited to a smaller audience.

If the story expired but remains in the poster's archive, they can add it to a Highlight.

The poster opens their profile and taps New, or taps Story highlight when New is not visible.

They select the archived story, tap Next, name the Highlight, and tap Add.

If the poster deleted the story, they can restore it from Recently deleted before Instagram permanently removes it.

Their path is Profile, Menu, Settings and activity, Your activity, Recently deleted, choose the story, More options, then Restore.

If the story was hidden from you, the poster can go to Profile, Menu, Story, live and location, Hide story and live from, deselect your account, then tap Back.

For Close Friends stories, they can use Profile, Menu, Close Friends, add you, and tap Done.

Report a repeated story loading problem

This helps when Stories keep failing after the story is live, your access is allowed, and local troubleshooting did not fix Instagram.

Open Instagram and tap your profile picture.

Open Menu.

Tap Help.

Choose Report a problem and send the story-loading issue to Instagram.

If shake reporting is enabled, shake your phone while the error is on screen.

Instagram also includes a Shake phone to report a problem toggle.

Skip third-party anonymous story viewers, downloaders, and Instagram downgrades. Use Instagram, Instagram web, App Store, and Google Play update or reinstall paths instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Instagram say story no longer available when I just got the notification?

The notification can be stale. Open the poster's profile directly and tap the active story ring. If there is no ring, the story has expired, been deleted, or become unavailable to your account.

Can I recover someone else's expired Instagram story?

No. Viewers cannot restore another person's expired or deleted story. Check Highlights or ask the poster to repost it or add it to a Highlight.

Does clearing cache delete my Instagram account?

No. Clearing cache on Android removes temporary local files. Clearing storage or data resets local app data and requires you to sign back in, but it does not delete your Instagram account.

Can blocking, Close Friends, or private accounts cause this message?

Yes. If the story owner blocked you, hid stories from you, shared only to Close Friends, or uses a private account you do not follow, you cannot bypass that from your account.
