Spotify Shuffle can break in a few annoying ways. The button may be off, Smart Shuffle may be adding songs, the queue may be taking over, or your account settings may be limiting what plays.

Start with the playback controls Spotify uses now, then move into queue, account, and app fixes that clear the problem without chasing old menu names.

1. Check the Shuffle button first

Start where Spotify expects you to control playback. The Shuffle icon tells you exactly what mode is active.

  1. 1.Open the playlist, album, or artist profile you want to play.
  2. 2.Tap or click Shuffle.
  3. 3.Open Now Playing.
  4. 4.Check the Shuffle icon: green means Shuffle is on, and gray means Shuffle is off.

On a tablet, tap the album artwork in the side menu to open Now Playing. On desktop or the web player, press Alt + S on Mac or Ctrl/Cmd + S on Windows to toggle Shuffle.

2. Change Smart Shuffle back to regular Shuffle

Smart Shuffle is the usual culprit when Spotify keeps adding recommendations or stops feeling like a normal shuffled playlist.

On Premium mobile, open a playlist or tap the Now Playing bar. Tap the Shuffle icon until regular Shuffle is active instead of Smart Shuffle.

To remove Smart Shuffle from the playback mode cycle, go to profile picture > Settings and privacy > Playback, then switch Include Smart Shuffle in play modes off.

Spotify Free on mobile has a hard limit here. Spotify says Smart Shuffle is always active on Free mobile, so full control over playback order requires Premium.

3. Pick a Shuffle Mode that fits your playlist

  • Open Settings.
  • Select Playback.
  • Open Shuffle Mode.
  • Choose Fewer repeats or Standard.

Spotify supports both modes for Premium users. Fewer repeats is the Premium default, while Standard remains available. Restart or update Spotify when Shuffle Mode is missing.

4. Clear the queue before testing Shuffle again

A manual queue beats your playlist order, so Spotify can look broken while it is simply playing what was queued.

  1. 1.On mobile or tablet with Premium, tap the Now Playing bar.
  2. 2.Tap Play Queue.
  3. 3.Select Clear.
  4. 4.Restart the playlist and turn Shuffle on again.

On desktop or the web player, click Play Queue next to the play bar, select Clear queue, then choose Yes.

5. Stop Autoplay and Automix from changing the session

When Spotify reaches the end of your selected album or playlist, Autoplay can continue with similar songs. Turn it off if the session keeps drifting away from what you picked.

On mobile or tablet, go to profile picture > Settings and privacy, find Playback, scroll to Autoplay, and switch it off. On desktop, go to profile picture > Settings, scroll to Autoplay, and switch it off.

Automix can also change transitions on select Spotify playlists, even when Shuffle is on. Premium users can turn it off on mobile from profile picture > Settings and privacy > Playback > Track transitions > Automix. On desktop, use profile picture > Settings > Playback > Automix.

For a Mixed Playlist, open the playlist and select Mix. Spotify then plays it as a regular playlist.

6. Fix Premium, region, and explicit track limits

If you pay for Premium but still see limited mobile controls, log out of Spotify and log back in with the account that has Premium. Also check that Premium was not purchased through a different login method or account.

Free users abroad can lose playback after 14 days in a different country or region. Go to Edit profile > Country or region, choose the new country or region, then select Save profile.

If Shuffle skips or grays out explicit songs, turn explicit playback on. On mobile or tablet, go to profile picture > Settings and privacy, then under Content and display, switch Allow Explicit Content on. On desktop, open profile picture > Settings, then under Explicit Content, switch Allow playback of explicit-rated content on.

Premium Family managers can allow or block explicit content from the Premium Family page by selecting the member and switching Explicit content on or off.

7. Clear cache and update the Spotify app

Once the playback settings are correct, clean up the app data Spotify says can cause common issues.

  • iPhone or Android: go to profile picture > Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline, then under Storage, tap Clear next to Clear cache.
  • Desktop: go to profile picture > Settings > Storage, then select Clear cache.

Restart Spotify after clearing cache. Then update the app.

  1. 1.On iPhone, open the App Store, tap your Apple ID image, tap App Updates, find Spotify, and tap UPDATE.
  2. 2.On Android, open the Google Play Store, search Spotify, and tap UPDATE.
  3. 3.On desktop, click your profile picture when a blue dot appears, then choose Update Spotify now.

8. Reinstall Spotify or switch to the web player

Reinstall Spotify when Shuffle still behaves badly after the cache and update steps.

On iPhone or iPad, tap and hold the Spotify app icon, choose Remove App, then Delete App. Install Spotify again from the App Store.

On Android 6.0 and newer, open Settings > Apps > Spotify, choose Uninstall, then install Spotify again from Google Play or your phone’s app store.

On Mac, open Finder > Applications, drag Spotify to Trash, empty Trash, then install Spotify again from Spotify’s download page.

For a quick workaround, open the Spotify web player in a supported browser. Shuffle is available in the web player, and the desktop/web keyboard shortcut works there too.

Skip older tutorials that mention Enable All Play Modes. Spotify’s current setting is Include Smart Shuffle in play modes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Spotify Shuffle keep playing recommended songs?

Smart Shuffle is adding recommendations. Premium users can switch back to regular Shuffle or turn off Include Smart Shuffle in play modes. Free mobile users have Smart Shuffle always active.

Can I make Spotify Shuffle repeat songs less often?

Yes, on Premium. Open Settings > Playback > Shuffle Mode and choose Fewer repeats. Choose Standard if you want Spotify’s other shuffle style.

Why does Spotify Shuffle play queued songs first?

The play queue takes priority over the playlist. Clear Play Queue, then restart the playlist with Shuffle turned on.

Does reinstalling Spotify delete downloads?

A clean reinstall removes downloaded music and podcasts, so they must be downloaded again. Your Spotify account, playlists, and library stay tied to your account.
