Snap Map breaks in a few recognizable ways: the map will not open, friends disappear, your location stops updating, or friends cannot see you. The fix starts inside the Snapchat mobile app, then moves through location access, privacy controls, connection, cache, updates, and account restrictions. Follow the steps in order so you do not change deeper phone settings before the basic Snapchat controls are correct.

1. Open Snap Map from the mobile app

Start with the correct surface: Snap Map currently works in the Snapchat mobile app, not Snapchat for Web or a desktop browser.

Open Snapchat on your iPhone or Android phone.

Go to the Camera screen.

Swipe right twice to open Snap Map.

Older web-based Snap Map advice is outdated. Use the mobile app before changing privacy, location, or account settings.

2. Give Snapchat precise location access

When Snap Map opens but places you incorrectly or refuses to update your position, check location permission first.

On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.

Turn on Location Services, tap Snapchat, choose a location access option, then turn on Precise Location.

On Android, open Settings > Location > App location permissions > Snapchat.

Choose Allow all the time or Allow only while using the app, then turn on Use precise location.

You can also touch and hold Snapchat, then go to App info > Permissions > Location.

3. Switch off Ghost Mode for friends

Permission only lets Snapchat access your location; privacy settings decide which friends see it.

Open Snap Map.

Tap the gear icon at the top of the map.

Turn Ghost Mode off.

Choose My Friends, My Friends, Except..., or Only These Friends.

There is also a settings route: open Profile > gear icon > My Privacy & Data > Who Can See > See My Location, then choose the same audience. Friend location sharing requires both people to have added each other.

4. Keep location updating after Snapchat closes

Only while using updates your Snap Map location while Snapchat is open. For updates after closing the app, give Snapchat background location access and keep your Snap Map audience enabled.

On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Snapchat, choose Always, then keep Precise Location on.

On Android, open Settings > Location > App location permissions > Snapchat, choose Allow all the time, then keep Use precise location on.

In Snapchat, open Snap Map > gear icon, turn Ghost Mode off, and choose the friends who should see you.

On Pixel and stock Android 14 or later, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Snapchat > App battery usage, then under Allow background usage choose Unrestricted or Optimized. Other Android phones keep this control in the manufacturer's battery menu, so the labels vary.

On iPhone, open Settings > General > Background App Refresh, turn on Background App Refresh, and allow Snapchat when it appears in the list.

5. Reload the app and connection

A stuck network session stops map tiles, friend locations, and location updates from loading.

Move to a stronger Wi-Fi or cellular area, then switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Close Snapchat next.

On iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom and pause, then swipe up on the Snapchat preview.

On iPhone with a Home button, double-click Home, find Snapchat, and swipe up.

On Android gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom, hold, release, then swipe up on Snapchat.

Restart the phone when Snap Map still loads badly.

On iPhone X or later, press and hold either volume button and the side button, drag the power-off slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

On iPhone 6, 7, 8, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), hold the side button, drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button again.

On iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 5, or earlier, use the top button in the same steps.

On Android, use the phone's power menu or Restart control.

6. Clear cache and stop Data Saver

Snapchat's in-app cache tool targets stale loading data without deleting account content. Data Saver reduces mobile-data loading, so turn it off while fixing Snap Map.

On iPhone, open Snapchat > Profile > gear icon > App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data > Manage My Data > Clear Cache > Clear.

On Android, open Snapchat > Profile > gear icon > App & Privacy > My Privacy & Data > Manage My Data > Clear Data > Clear Cache > Clear.

On iPhone, turn off Data Saver from Profile > gear icon > My Privacy & Data > Data Saver.

On Android, turn off Data Saver from Profile > gear icon > My Privacy & Data > Data Saver, then uncheck Data Saver.

For Android system cache, open Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Storage or Storage & cache > Clear cache.

Use Clear storage or Clear data only after you accept the sign-in and data risk.

7. Update or reinstall Snapchat

Use the current official store build before treating the problem as an account issue.

On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, tap your account button or photo, open App Updates, then tap Update next to Snapchat.

On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps & device > Updates available > See details, then tap Update next to Snapchat.

Reinstall next.

On iPhone, touch and hold Snapchat, tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete, then install Snapchat from the App Store.

On Android, open Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage, select Snapchat, tap Uninstall, then install it again from Google Play Store.

Back up Memories before deleting the app.

8. Remove account and device blocks

Account restrictions and device management sit outside normal Snap Map settings. Fix those before filing a bug report.

Remove any unauthorized Snapchat third-party app, tweak, or plugin from the device.

Update Snapchat to the latest official version, then sign in again.

When a temporary lock is active, wait for the lock period to end or open accounts.snapchat.com and use Unlock when the Accounts Portal shows it.

On family-managed, school, or work devices, installation, updates, and location changes are controlled by the parent or administrator.

On iPhone family controls, check Settings > Screen Time > the child's name > Content & Privacy Restrictions.

On Android family controls, open Family Link > the child's profile > Controls > Google Play.

9. Report the Snap Map bug

After the app, permissions, privacy, connection, cache, update, and account checks are done, send the bug to Snapchat from inside the app.

  1. 1.Open Snapchat.
  2. 2.Tap Profile.
  3. 3.Tap the gear icon.
  4. 4.Scroll to Support and Safety.
  5. 5.Tap Bugs and Suggestions.
  6. 6.Tap Report a Bug and follow the prompts.

When Snapchat will not open, use Snapchat's support site instead.

For guided help, open Snapchat Support, use AI Search, and verify the answer against the linked support materials because Snapchat says AI Search makes mistakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I disable Snap Map completely after setting it up?

No. Snapchat says Snap Map cannot be disabled altogether after first setup. Use Ghost Mode to hide your location, or change Snapchat's device location permission.

What should I check when Snapchat cannot be installed or updated?

Check family controls, school controls, work-device policy, and store restrictions. Those controls can block Snapchat installation, updates, or permission changes.

Why is precise location missing on my Android phone?

Google ties per-app precise location to Android 12 and newer. On older or manufacturer-customized Android versions, the location menus and labels vary.

Should I use Snap Map on a desktop browser?

No. Snapchat's current support guidance says Snap Map can currently only be viewed in the Snapchat mobile app.
