To fix Slack not loading, check for an outage, reload Slack, then clear its cache if loading still fails. If you use a browser, try a private window before clearing browsing data or disabling extensions. The Windows Settings paths below use Windows 11 menus.

The short version

  • Check service status: Look for a Slack incident affecting connectivity, login, or messaging before changing your device.
  • Reload first: Press Command + R on Mac or Ctrl + R on Windows or Linux while the desktop app or browser is focused.
  • Clear the cache: Use Slack’s cache controls for your desktop or mobile app.
  • Isolate browser problems: Test private browsing, then investigate extensions and cached data.
  • Escalate gradually: Update Slack before trying a reset or reinstall.

Check Slack’s status and reload

Open Slack Status at slack-status.com and check Connectivity, Login/SSO, and Messaging. Open any relevant incident to see what is affected. If an outage matches your problem, follow Slack’s recovery updates and retry afterward.

With Slack focused in its desktop app or a desktop browser, press Command + R on Mac or Ctrl + R on Windows or Linux. When the desktop app displays a connection failure, click Restart Slack beneath the error. If loading still fails, continue with the fixes for your app or browser.

Close an unresponsive phone app

On an iPhone with gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom and pause, find Slack, then swipe its preview upward. On supported iPhone SE models, double-click the Home button and swipe Slack’s preview upward. Reopen Slack to check whether it loads.

On a Google Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Slack > Force stop. Tap OK, then reopen Slack. Other Android manufacturers may use different labels for these controls.

If reopening does not help, restart your phone. On a Face ID iPhone, hold either Volume button and the Side button until the power-off slider appears; on iPhone SE second and third generation models, hold only the Side button. Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

On Pixel 6 and later, hold Power + Volume up, then tap Restart. Open Slack again after the phone restarts.

Clear Slack’s app cache

Clearing Slack’s cache removes cached app data. In the desktop app, open Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Cache and Restart. On Windows, first open the top-left three-lines menu to reach Help.

Resetting the mobile cache removes cached app data. On iOS, when Slack’s preferences remain accessible, tap your profile picture, then tap Preferences. Below Device & Troubleshooting, tap Debug & Reset Cache, then tap Reset Cache. On Android, when those controls are accessible, tap your profile picture and open Preferences > Reset Cache.

Clearing the cache through Pixel settings removes Slack’s cached app data. When you cannot reach Slack’s controls, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Slack > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Other Android phones may use different wording.

Slack says the iOS system-settings cache reset signs you out of all workspaces. To use it when the in-app controls are inaccessible, open Slack’s entry in the iOS Settings app and turn on Reset Cache on Next Launch. Reopen Slack afterward.

Isolate browser data and extension problems

In desktop Chrome, open More > New Incognito window and test Slack there. In Edge, choose Settings and more > New InPrivate window; in Safari on Mac, choose File > New Private Window. Success in Chrome Incognito suggests a problem with regular-profile data or extensions. If your organization disables Incognito, continue with the permitted browser checks below.

To test browser access, open the Slack sign-in page, enter your email, and select Sign In with Email. Complete authentication using a passkey, emailed code, or your organization’s required SSO. Sign in only through Slack’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.

For Chrome extensions, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions, turn extensions off, and retry Slack. Re-enable them individually to identify which one interferes; ask your administrator about enforced extensions. In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Extensions, deselect each installed extension’s checkbox, and retry.

Clearing Chrome’s cache deletes cached images and files; including cookies can sign you out. Open More > Delete browsing data, set the time range to All time, and select Cached images and files. Select Cookies and other site data only if you also want to reset sign-in and site data, leave unrelated categories unselected, then select Delete data.

Clearing Edge’s cache removes cached files, while cookie removal signs you out and synchronized categories may affect other devices. Open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear. Choose the Time range and select Cached images and files, adding Cookies and other site data only for a sign-in reset. Select Clear now.

Clearing Firefox’s cache removes temporary cached files and pages. Open the menu, choose History > Clear Recent History…, and set When: to Everything. Select Temporary cached files and pages, leave categories you want to keep unselected, and click Clear.

Removing Safari’s Slack website data deletes that local site data and can require signing in again. Choose Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, select Slack’s website entry, and click Remove. Click Done and retry in a normal window.

If browser loading still fails, open the same Slack website in another supported browser or on another device using the same network. Compare the results to narrow the problem to a particular browser or device.

Update Slack and your browser

For Slack downloaded directly on Mac, choose Slack > Check for Updates, then select Restart to Apply Update. For the direct-download Windows edition, open the three-lines menu and choose Help > Check for Updates > Restart to Apply Update. Linux update steps vary by installation; if your system is configured to use Slack’s repository, Slack updates when your computer updates. If your organization manages the installation, ask IT to handle updates when necessary.

For the Mac App Store edition, open the store and choose Updates > Slack > Update. On Windows 11, update the Microsoft Store edition through Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates; some Store layouts place updates under Downloads.

For Windows updates on Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and install any that are available.

On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, then tap App Updates and install Slack’s available update. If Slack has no update available, check for an iOS or iPadOS update. For Google Play installations on Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and choose Manage apps & devices > Updates available to update Slack.

Chrome updates through More > Help > About Google Chrome; let the check finish and select Relaunch when offered. Linux package-managed Chrome installations use their package manager. In Edge, open Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, allow updates to install, and select Restart if prompted.

For Mozilla-installed Firefox, open the menu and choose Help and Report > About Firefox; some versions label the submenu Help. On Mac, use Firefox > About Firefox, then select Restart to update Firefox after the download. Store and Linux distribution packages update through their respective package systems. For Safari, install available macOS updates to obtain browser updates.

Try app repair or a local reset

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find Slack, open its additional options, and select Advanced options, then Repair when those controls are present. Microsoft says these controls are not available for every app, so continue to connection diagnostics if your installation does not expose them.

Resetting Slack removes its local app state. If repair fails and Reset is available, select it in the same panel. Open Slack again to check the result.

On Android, clearing storage erases local app data and requires signing in again. If cache clearing failed on a Pixel, return to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Slack > Storage & cache. Select Clear storage or Clear data, then tap OK; wording varies on other Android phones.

Reinstall a mobile app that still will not load

Deleting Slack from an iPhone or iPad may lose locally stored app data. Touch and hold Slack, then tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Reinstall from Slack’s official iOS download page and sign in again. If parental controls or device management restrict deletion, continue to support instead.

Uninstalling Slack on Android removes the app and can remove local state or require signing in again. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and choose Manage apps & devices > Manage. Select Slack and tap Uninstall, then reinstall from Slack’s official Android download page and sign in again. If device management restricts removal, ask your administrator for help.

Collect details for a persistent connection failure

For desktop or browser connectivity problems, run Slack’s connection test at https://slack.com/help/test. Give any reported errors to your network administrator.

In the desktop app, choose Help > Troubleshooting > Restart and Collect Net Logs. Reproduce the loading failure, click Stop Logging, and attach the resulting ZIP from Downloads to your Slack Support request. A connection-error screen may instead offer Download Logs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Firefox Troubleshoot Mode help identify the cause?

Yes, it temporarily disables extensions, hardware acceleration, and certain customizations while you retry Slack. Open the menu, choose Help and Report > Troubleshoot Mode…, then click Restart and Open; some versions call the submenu Help. Restart Firefox normally to restore those features.

Does Edge InPrivate rule out every extension?

No, extensions permitted to run InPrivate can still run there. A loading failure in an InPrivate window therefore does not rule out extension interference.

What can you try if Safari uses iCloud Private Relay?

On a Mac with iCloud+ Private Relay enabled for the network, choose View > Reload and Show IP Address to test Slack without it. That command appears only under that condition.

How can you collect connection logs when Slack fails in Chrome?

Open chrome://net-export/ in desktop Chrome and click Start Logging to Disk. Save the file as slackNetlog, reproduce Slack’s failure in another tab, then click Stop Logging. Send the resulting file to Slack Support.
