A black screen in the YouTube app on a Samsung TV points to a stuck app session, a network connection issue, outdated TV software, or a damaged app install. Start with the quick resets, then move through the Samsung TV and YouTube account fixes in order.
Keep the TV remote nearby and exit YouTube before opening TV-level reset menus. The steps below go from fastest to most disruptive.
Start with a Samsung TV cold boot
A cold boot is the fastest first move because Samsung says it clears the TV memory cache and fixes app glitches. With the TV turned on, press and hold the Power button on your Samsung remote while the TV turns off and then back on.
After the TV restarts, open YouTube again and play a video. If the app loads normally, stop here.
If the remote method fails, leave the TV on and unplug the TV power cord from the wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds, plug the TV back in, turn it on, and reopen YouTube.
Restart YouTube and the TV power connection
This fixes a frozen YouTube app session or a black screen that appears only after opening the app.
Close the YouTube app.
Open YouTube again and test the same video.
Unplug the TV power cable from the outlet if the black screen returns.
Wait at least 30 seconds.
Plug the TV back in and open YouTube again.
Check the internet connection
If a cold boot did not clear the black screen, check the connection between the TV, your router, and the app service next.
On newer Samsung TVs, open All Settings, select Connection, select Network, and choose Network Status. Let the TV run the test and follow the on-screen error guidance.
On models that use the older menu layout, open General, then Network. Use that path when your TV does not show Connection.
If the TV is on Wi-Fi, go to Settings, choose General, choose Network, select Open Network Settings, and pick your Wi-Fi network. Enter the password, select Done, then select OK.
Refresh Wi-Fi or switch to Ethernet
If YouTube stays black while Samsung menus still work, refresh the saved Wi-Fi connection. Go to All Settings, then Connection, then Network, then Open Network Settings, choose Wireless, scroll to Manage Saved Networks, select your network, and choose Delete.
Return to the wireless network page and connect to Wi-Fi again. Samsung says the 2018 NU7100, NU710D, NU7200, NU7300, and NU730D models support 2.4 GHz networks only.
For a steadier connection, plug an Ethernet cable into the LAN port on the TV or One Connect Box, then connect the other end to your router or modem. From the Home screen, open Settings, select General, select Network, and select OK.
Reset network settings and DNS
Resetting the TV network settings helps when YouTube opens to a black screen because the TV keeps reconnecting with a bad saved network state. Open All Settings, choose Connection, choose Network, and select Reset Network.
Reconnect the TV to the internet and test YouTube. If the same black screen returns, set DNS manually from All Settings, then Connection, then Network, then Network Status.
Select IP Settings, choose DNS Setting, select Enter Manually, choose DNS Server, and enter 8.8.8.8. Try YouTube again after the TV reconnects.
If this method fails, power cycle the whole network next: unplug the modem, router, and TV, then reconnect each device starting from the wall connection and ending with the TV.
Update the TV and the YouTube app
Open Settings.
Select All Settings.
Select Support.
Select Software Update.
Select Update Now and let the TV install the update.
Wait for the TV to restart automatically.
Open Home, go to Apps, select App Settings, and turn Auto Update on.
Keep Auto Update on so Samsung TV apps receive new fixes automatically.
Reinstall YouTube on the Samsung TV
This fixes a damaged YouTube app install or a preloaded app that needs a fresh copy.
Open Apps on the TV.
Select the Settings icon in the top-right corner.
Find YouTube and select Delete.
Press Return.
Select the Search icon in the top-right corner.
Enter YouTube, select it, and choose Install.
If Delete is grayed out, choose Reinstall instead.
Open YouTube and sign in again if the reinstall signed you out.
Fix account and casting problems
When the black screen follows one YouTube account, reset that account’s session on the TV. Open YouTube, select the left menu, choose your profile picture, select your account, and choose Sign out; then sign in again with your Google Account.
If signing out does not clear it, return to the same accounts page and choose Remove Account. Add the account again and test playback.
When the TV app is too black-screened to reach the account page, use a browser on another device to open Google’s device activity page, select the Samsung TV, and choose Sign out. You can also open Google Account permissions, select YouTube on TV, choose Remove Access, then reopen YouTube on the TV and sign in again.
If this method fails, check casting: unlink paired devices from YouTube, then Settings, then Linked devices, then Unlink all devices, or start playback from the YouTube mobile app with Cast.
Use Smart Hub reset or TV reset last
Use these only after the faster fixes do not clear the YouTube black screen.
- 1.Run Start Smart Hub Connection Test from Settings, Support, Device Care, Self Diagnosis, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- 2.For 2019 and newer TVs, reset Smart Hub from Settings, Support, Device Care, Self Diagnosis, then Reset Smart Hub.
- 3.For 2018 and older TVs, use Settings, Support, Self Diagnosis, then Reset Smart Hub.
- 4.Enter the TV PIN when asked; the default PIN is 0000.
- 5.If YouTube is still black after Smart Hub setup, exit the app and factory reset from Settings, General & Privacy, then Reset, or use Settings, Support, Self Diagnosis, then Reset on models that place it there.
Samsung’s fix path for an app that will not work centers on cold booting, updating, deleting and reinstalling or using Reinstall, resetting Smart Hub, and resetting the TV, and it does not include clearing the YouTube app’s cache. Samsung does document a per-app cache tool on sets that have Device Care, generally 2020 and newer models: open Settings, select Support, select Device Care, select Manage Storage, choose the app, then select View Details to clear its data and cache. If your TV lists YouTube there, that is worth one try; if the menu is missing or the app is not listed, use the cold boot and reinstall steps above instead.
If the whole TV screen is black outside YouTube too, run Start Picture Test from Settings, Support, Device Care, then Self Diagnosis. If other apps work and YouTube alone still fails after these steps, contact YouTube support or Samsung Customer Care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is YouTube showing a black screen on my Samsung TV but other apps work?
That points to a YouTube app session, account session, app install, or service-specific connection issue rather than a TV display failure. Start with a cold boot, then reinstall YouTube and sign back in.
Will reinstalling YouTube sign me out on a Samsung TV?
Yes. Deleting and reinstalling YouTube can sign you out of the app, so you may need to sign in again with your Google Account.
What should I do if Delete is grayed out for YouTube?
Select Reinstall instead. Samsung uses Reinstall for some recommended or preloaded apps when Delete is unavailable.
Can an older Samsung TV lose YouTube app support?
Yes. If the TV says YouTube is no longer available because the device does not meet the latest requirements, update the TV firmware first. If the app still is not supported and the TV has a browser, try youtube.com as a fallback.
