Your Roku won't connect to the internet, leaving you stuck at setup or staring at apps that won't open. Start with the connection test to find where things are going wrong, then work through the fixes below. Save a factory reset for last.
Find out which connection is failing
Press Home and open Settings > Network > Check connection. Roku tests its connection to your local network and its internet access separately.
Review which test fails. For connection details, open Settings > Network > About.
Connect a phone or computer to the same network and open a public website. If that device cannot get online either, contact your internet service provider to investigate an outage or blocked access. Restart your network equipment using the instructions below, too.
If the tests pass but a streaming app fails, try another app. When other apps work, check the failing service's outage information and your sign-in status before resetting Roku's network settings.
Reconnect to the right Wi-Fi network
Start here when Roku cannot join Wi-Fi, especially with error 14.40 or 14.41. Those errors point to a password problem.
Open Home > Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless. During initial setup, start with Wireless.
If your network is missing, select Scan again to see all networks.
Select your home network from the results.
Enter its Wi-Fi password, matching every uppercase and lowercase letter.
Select Connect.
Restart Roku and your network equipment
A restart addresses connection glitches without erasing your Roku settings.
Select Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart. If Power is absent, select System restart directly under System.
If the menus are unresponsive, disconnect Roku's power cord for at least 10 seconds. A Roku TV's remote or physical Power button does not perform the equivalent system restart.
Reconnect Roku's power cord.
Disconnect your modem and router, or your combined gateway, from power.
Wait 10 seconds.
Reconnect power to your network equipment.
Allow the equipment to finish restarting.
Retry the Roku connection through Settings > Network > Check connection.
Reset the saved network connection
If reconnecting and restarting have not helped, clear Roku's saved connection and set up Wi-Fi again.
- 1.Open Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset.
- 2.Select Reset connection and let Roku restart.
- 3.Open Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless.
- 4.Select your network.
- 5.Enter its password.
- 6.Select Connect.
Give your wireless connection a better chance
Move Roku and the router closer together. Distance and obstructions interfere with Wi-Fi.
Move devices out of cabinets into an open position.
Elevate them to reduce obstructions.
Separate the router from microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors to reduce interference.
For a Streaming Stick tucked behind the television, install an HDMI extender between the stick and TV to reduce obstruction.
If your player or stick reports low power or restarts unexpectedly, power it from a wall outlet instead of the TV's USB port.
For a receiver-equipped Streaming Stick displaying error 022, disconnect any substitute USB cable. Models such as the Streaming Stick+ 3810X need the Roku cable containing the Long Range Wireless Receiver.
Reconnect that receiver cable. If it is missing, obtain a compatible replacement from Roku.
Connect the stick to power.
If Roku connects but buffers, pause large downloads and other simultaneous streams. Reducing competing traffic does not fix an incorrect Wi-Fi password.
When your Roku and router both support 5 GHz, enable that band through the router's administration interface. Router menu labels vary, and some mesh networks combine both bands under one name.
Select the 5 GHz network on Roku through Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless.
If these changes fail, try Ethernet or a phone hotspot next. A working alternative connection helps narrow down whether your home Wi-Fi needs more attention.
An alternative connection can narrow down the problem
For a Roku with a built-in Ethernet port, connect an Ethernet cable between Roku and your router. Select Home > Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wired.
If an existing wired connection fails, particularly with error 012 or 013, disconnect the Ethernet cable for 10 seconds. Reconnect it. If that fails, try another cable or switch to Wi-Fi through Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless.
To test another wireless connection, enable your phone's hotspot. On Roku, open Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless, choose the hotspot, enter its password, and select Connect. Streaming over the hotspot consumes mobile data.
If Roku works on the hotspot but not your home network, focus further troubleshooting on your router or internet service. Once connected, select Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check Now. Roku's update-troubleshooting instructions label the same step System update > Check now, so use whichever wording your device shows under System. Available software and app updates install automatically, followed by a restart.
Save a factory reset for the last attempt
Contact your internet service provider if your home network still cannot provide internet access.
For a Roku that keeps failing after these connection checks, open Roku's support website and select Start chatting for guided help.
Before proceeding, make sure you are ready to erase Roku's settings and account information. A factory reset requires you to repeat setup and account activation.
Open Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.
On a Roku TV, select Factory reset everything.
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the reset.
Repeat setup, including connecting Roku to your network and activating it with your account.
Tip: If the device still fails after resetting, contact Roku or the TV manufacturer with your device ID.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reconnect Roku using the mobile app if I lost the remote?
The Roku mobile app requires your phone and Roku to be on the same local network. It cannot reconnect a Roku that is already disconnected from Wi-Fi. If Roku still has a local-network connection, open the mobile app and select the discovered Roku to use its remote.
How do I connect Roku to hotel or dorm Wi-Fi?
On an activated Roku that supports Hotel & Dorm Connect, select the hotel or dorm network, then choose I am at a hotel or college dorm. Follow the TV's instructions using a phone or computer browser. You need a physical remote. If authentication expires, select Try again and confirm that Status reads Connected.
Can I use a USB Ethernet adapter with any Roku?
No. USB Ethernet support depends on the exact Roku model. Supported devices require a 10/100 Mbps adapter with an AX8877X or SMSC95XX chipset and the correct connector. Check your model against Roku's USB Ethernet compatibility list before choosing an adapter. The Wired option appears only when Roku recognizes the adapter. If it is missing, verify compatibility, disconnect Roku's power, reseat the adapter, and reconnect power.
How do I keep my Roku TV connected during standby?
On Roku TVs with the setting, open Settings > System > Power > Fast TV start and check Enable 'Fast TV Start'. This maintains network connectivity during standby and increases standby power use.
