Roku Photo Streams is not working because Roku moved the feature into Backdrops. Your old photos live there now, and the current fixes happen in Backdrops, not the retired Photo Streams workflow. Start with the quickest check, then move through uploads, Google Photos, screensaver behavior, and app repair.

Open your photos in Backdrops first

Open Backdrops on your Roku device.

Select My Photos.

Choose the personal album you want to show.

Select the album or photo to display it.

If you were following an older Photo Streams tutorial, stop using the old Photo Streams app or photostreams.roku.com workflow. Roku now points users to Backdrops and backdrops.roku.com instead.

Tip: your Photo Streams pictures do not need to be uploaded again when they already appear in Backdrops.

Find Backdrops when it is missing

The most common cause is that Backdrops is not enabled on your Roku home screen yet.

Press Home, then go to Settings, Home Screen Menu, Backdrops, and Open Backdrops app.

If Backdrops is not listed there, open the Streaming Store and search for Backdrops.

Choose Add app or Open, then return to My Photos and check your albums.

Upload photos when albums look empty

Use this method when Backdrops opens but your photos are missing, or when you want to add a fresh album.

From the Roku home screen, open Backdrops App.

Select Add your photos.

Select Upload photos.

Scan the QR code with your phone and follow the onscreen instructions.

Sign in with your Roku account at backdrops.roku.com.

You can create up to 10 albums, upload 20 photos at a time, and keep up to 100 photos in each album. Backdrops supports JPG, PNG, HEIC, and WEBP files, subject to your account storage limits.

Reconnect Google Photos albums

Google Photos sharing can stop after app connection changes. Open Backdrops on your Roku and choose Connect Google Photos.

Scan the QR code with your phone, then sign in to your Google account. On your phone, open Google Photos and go to Settings, Apps & devices, Backdrops.

Choose the albums you want to share with Backdrops. Return to the Roku and select the Google Photos album you want to display.

Pick the album Roku should show

Backdrops shows one album at a time, so confirm the right source is selected.

  1. 1.Open Backdrops on your Roku device.
  2. 2.Use the Directional pad to browse your albums.
  3. 3.Select the album you want to display.
  4. 4.Press OK to start showing it.

Uploaded Backdrops photos and Google Photos cannot be combined in the same album. For a partial replacement for older multi-stream behavior, use My Favorites, which supports up to 1000 images.

Make Backdrops act like the old screensaver

If Photo Streams started automatically before, set Backdrops to take over that job. Open Backdrops, press Options, then go to Backdrops preferences, Auto-start, and choose 10 minutes.

Next, press Home and go to Settings, Theme, Screensaver start time, and Disable screensaver. That keeps the regular Roku screensaver from interrupting Backdrops.

If Backdrops still does not auto-start, Roku's Backdrops guidance says to open Home, Settings, System, Power, and enable Auto Power Saving. That option appears only on supported Roku streaming players. If it is absent, skip this step and use the Backdrops voice command or the documented Roku TV alternatives instead.

Fix slow loading and blank photos

The most common cause is a Roku connection problem, because Backdrops and cloud photos need the device to reach your account and photo source.

Press Home, then open Settings, Network, and About.

If the Roku is not connected, choose Set up connection and follow the onscreen instructions.

After the Roku is connected, select Check connection.

When the check passes, reopen Backdrops and try the album again.

Restart update or reinstall Backdrops

A stuck app or outdated Roku software can keep Backdrops from opening or loading photos. Restart first from Home, Settings, System, Power, and System restart.

If your Roku has no Power submenu, unplug it from power, wait 10 seconds, plug it directly into a power outlet, and turn it back on. Then check for updates through Home, Settings, System, Software update, and Check Now.

When Backdrops still fails, remove it from the home screen by pressing Home, highlighting the app, pressing Star, choosing Remove app, and confirming. Reinstall it from Home, Store, Apps, search for Backdrops, press OK, and choose Add app.

Use another photo viewing option

This fixes cases where Backdrops is not the photo viewer you want.

For Apple devices, first confirm your Roku supports AirPlay 2. Press Home, then go to Settings, System, and About to check your model and Roku OS version. Roku Select and Plus Series TVs support AirPlay on any Roku OS version. Other supported players and Roku TVs need Roku OS 9.4 or higher, and Roku TV 5xxx and 6xxx models, Roku Express 3700, Roku Express+ 3710, and Roku 4 (440) need Roku OS 10.0 or higher.

Next, press Home, go to Settings and Apple AirPlay and HomeKit, and make sure AirPlay is set to On. Then make sure the Apple device and Roku are on the same wireless network. You also need an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on iOS 12.3 or later, or a Mac on macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or later.

Open the photo or video on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Tap or click the AirPlay icon, using Share first when needed.

Select your Roku device.

Press Home on the Roku remote to stop sharing.

For local files, open Roku Media Player, choose Photo, select a USB drive or network DLNA server, navigate to the file, and press OK or Play. USB photo playback requires a Roku device with a USB port and supports JPG, PNG, and non-animated GIF files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Roku remove Photo Streams?

Roku says Photo Streams has become Backdrops. The current supported place to view those photos is Backdrops, especially the My Photos area.

Do I need to re-upload my old Photo Streams pictures?

No. Roku says photos from Photo Streams are already waiting in Backdrops and do not need to be re-uploaded.

Why can I only show one album now?

Backdrops displays one album at a time. It also cannot combine uploaded Backdrops photos and Google Photos in the same album.

Can I still use my own photos without Backdrops?

Yes. Use AirPlay from a compatible Apple device, or use Roku Media Player with USB or DLNA for local photo files.
