To fix Optimum Wi-Fi not working, check for an outage, restart your gateway or modem and router, then reconnect to your home network with the current password. Test a second device first to determine whether the problem affects your Optimum connection or just one phone, tablet, or computer.

The short version

  • Compare devices: Test another device on the same home network to identify whether the problem affects one device or your whole connection.
  • Check outages: Check Optimum's service status before changing equipment settings.
  • Restart equipment: Disconnect power for 30 seconds, then restore the modem or gateway before a separate router.
  • Confirm the network: Select your home network and enter its current password.
  • Follow the symptom: Check coverage, device settings, or account restrictions based on where the connection fails.

Check another device and look for an outage

Connect another phone, tablet, or computer to the same home Wi-Fi network and try accessing the internet. If several devices fail, continue with the Optimum connection checks below. If only one device fails, confirm its network and password, then move to the device-specific fixes.

Using a working connection such as cellular data, sign in to your Optimum account and open Support > Check for outages. You can also enter your ZIP code in Check Zip Code on Optimum's public outage map. If an outage is reported, monitor the restoration information before changing equipment settings.

Inspect connections and restart your equipment

Check that your gateway, modem, and separate router have power and that their outlets work. Inspect the power and Ethernet connections, and look for visibly damaged cables or a blown fuse. For cable service, make the coax connections finger-tight at both the wall and the equipment.

On an Optimum gateway equipped with an INFO button, briefly press INFO to wake its status lights before checking its condition. Note the light status so you can describe it to support if the connection stays offline.

Disconnect the equipment's power and remove any removable modem backup battery. Wait 30 seconds, then restore power to the modem or gateway first and allow it to reconnect. Power up a separate router afterward, and test internet access once startup is complete.

For supported Optimum-managed equipment, you can instead restart remotely by signing in to My Optimum. Tap WiFi > More options > Manage router settings, then tap Restart my Internet equipment. Allow approximately five minutes before testing the connection again.

Reconnect to the correct home network

Turn Wi-Fi off and back on on the affected device, and turn airplane mode off. Select your home's network name and enter its current Wi-Fi password. Optimum says to avoid accidentally joining the public optimumwifi or optimum networks when connecting at home.

For unchanged default credentials, check the router or gateway label. On supported Optimum-managed networks, sign in to optimum.net/mynetwork and find My WiFi network to view the credentials. You can also open My Optimum, then open My WiFi to view them.

If the password was changed, reconnect affected devices using the current credentials. Restart a device that still cannot connect after you select the correct network and enter the password. If other devices connect successfully, continue with the device-specific fixes.

Run troubleshooting in My Optimum

Install My Optimum from the official app download page on a supported iOS or Android device, then sign in with your Optimum ID and password. Troubleshooting functions depend on your equipment. Tap WiFi, tap Troubleshoot my Internet, then tap Let's fix this.

If no outage is found, tap Let's keep digging. Choose the symptom and indicate whether one or multiple devices are affected, then follow the repair instructions.

With compatible equipment, tap WiFi, then tap Troubleshoot my Internet to access a health check. Select My Internet is slow and On 2+ devices, or select I have a different problem, then tap Run a health check. Review equipment connectivity, delivered download speed, Wi-Fi coverage, and device signal strength.

Improve coverage and check your extenders

Test your connection close to the gateway before trying distant rooms. Move the router or gateway to a central, open location, away from thick walls, obstructions, microwaves, and interfering electronics. If distance is the main trigger, work through the steps to fix a weak Wi-Fi signal.

Pause large downloads, streams, and backups, and disconnect unnecessary devices before comparing performance. Run Optimum's speed test near the router, then repeat on an Ethernet-connected computer with a suitable port or adapter. Compare the results to distinguish a Wi-Fi coverage problem from a slower delivered connection.

On equipment supporting gateway speed tests, open My Optimum and tap WiFi > More Options, then tap Check my Internet speed to the Gateway. Compare that result with the speed measured on your Wi-Fi device to check how performance at the gateway differs from performance over Wi-Fi.

When My Optimum shows Extender is offline, tap Let's fix it, unplug the affected extender, then tap Let's do it. Follow the placement and reconnection instructions. For Extender 6 and Extender 6E, solid red or flashing white Wi-Fi lights mean you should move the extender closer to the gateway. Solid white indicates a good signal, while flashing red requires reconnection.

Repair a connection that fails on one device

When other devices work, forget the affected device's saved network and reconnect with the current home Wi-Fi password. The Windows steps below use Windows 11 menus. On a managed Apple device, contact your work or school administrator if policy prevents these changes, and consult IT before resetting an iPhone or iPad's network settings.

On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select your network, then select Forget. Reconnect with the current password. If that fails, open Get Help, search for “connect to network and internet,” then select Run network diagnostics and complete the suggested repairs.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi > Edit, then tap the network's More Info button. Tap Forget This Network, then tap Forget and reconnect. On Mac, open System Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced, click the network's More Options button, select Remove From List, then click Forget and reconnect.

On Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet > Saved networks, select your network, then tap Forget. Return to Internet and select the network again. On Galaxy phones and tablets with these labels, open Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi, hold the affected network, then select Forget network before reconnecting.

If reconnecting fails, a network reset is a later option that removes saved network settings. On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset > Reset now, select Yes, and allow the PC to restart. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General, select Transfer or Reset iPhone or Transfer or Reset iPad, then select Reset > Reset Network Settings.

On Pixel, open Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi, then tap Reset settings. On Galaxy devices exposing these labels, open Settings > General management > Reset > Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, then tap Reset settings. Reconnect to your home network afterward.

Resolve activation and account restrictions

After a new installation or equipment replacement eligible for Optimum Self-setup, complete activation before continuing with connection repairs. Scan the QR code supplied in the equipment box or on your store receipt, or open the setup link in Optimum's email or text. Complete the Self-setup experience.

For Advanced Security subscribers with a compatible Optimum-provided gateway, check restrictions when only certain devices, profiles, or websites fail. Sign in with the account that owns Advanced Security, open its management page, and select Manage my settings. For an affected profile, select Manage Profile, open Set Internet off schedule or Set Homework Time, and check for an active Pause Internet period.

Adjust the schedule's Start and End times as needed, then select Save. For a mistakenly blocked website, open Block & allow lists and select Remove beside the domain. Check the profile-specific block list too.

If access is restricted at the account level, open My Optimum, then open My Bill to review billing and payment history or pay the bill. Contact Optimum if service remains restricted. For a genuine copyright-alert interruption page requiring acknowledgment, select Acknowledge. If the landing page instead shows a temporary copyright suspension, access returns automatically after the displayed period ends.

Ask Optimum to diagnose a persistent failure

When the connection still fails, use the official Optimum contact page and select Chat now, or call the number it lists for existing customers. Explain whether one device or every device fails. Provide the outage status, equipment light status, restart result, and any wired and wireless test results.

For Optimum-managed equipment, ask support to assess whether the modem or gateway needs a remote reset or network resynchronization. If troubleshooting fails, request an equipment assessment or service visit. A technician can inspect exterior wiring and junction boxes, and support can advise on equipment replacement eligibility.
