To fix no sound from a PS5 on your TV, unmute your TV, undo the controller’s all-audio mute if its button is blinking, select HDMI audio output and check the HDMI connection. If a game remains silent, check its audio controls and try Linear PCM. Start with these checks before moving to updates or restoring default settings.
The short version
- Check mute first: Unmute your TV or sound system and press the controller’s mute button once if it is blinking.
- Choose HDMI output: Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device and select the HDMI device connected to your TV.
- Check the connection: Reseat the HDMI cable and try connecting the PS5 directly to the TV.
- For silent games: Check the game’s audio controls and try Linear PCM under Audio Format (Priority).

Unmute the TV and controller
Use your TV remote to unmute the sound and raise the volume. If you listen through a soundbar or receiver, unmute that device and raise its volume too.
If your DualSense controller’s mute button is blinking, press it once to restore audio. Check the TV sound again, then continue with output selection if playback remains silent.
Send PS5 audio to the HDMI device
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device and select the HDMI device connected to your TV. Its displayed name can vary. For the control center shortcut, press PS, select Sound, then change the output device to the HDMI output.
With a connected audio accessory, automatic switching can route sound away from the TV. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and turn off Switch Output Device Automatically, then select the HDMI output under Output Device. This prevents automatic rerouting, but it does not repair an HDMI connection problem.
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output > HDMI Device Type and choose the connected device type. If you use an AV amplifier, match Number of Channels to your actual speaker system. If these settings already match your equipment, check where the TV sends sound next.
Check where the TV sends sound
On Samsung TVs with this menu, open Menu > Settings > All Settings > Sound > Sound Output, then select TV Speaker to listen through the internal speakers. This helps when the TV’s sound output has been set to something other than its internal speakers. Samsung menus vary by model and region, so follow your model’s instructions if the labels differ.
If your Samsung TV has a headphone jack, unplug anything connected to it and check the speakers again. That connection can redirect audio away from the TV speakers. If sound remains missing, continue with the HDMI connection.
Check the HDMI cable and signal path
Reseat the HDMI cable securely at both the PS5 and the TV. If sound remains missing, try another HDMI cable. On a TV with multiple HDMI inputs, connect the console to another port and select that input on the TV.
If your HDMI connection passes through other equipment, connect the PS5 directly to the TV. Temporarily bypass any soundbar, receiver, capture device, HDMI switch or converter in the signal path. Check playback with that direct connection before continuing.
If picture is missing as well as sound, try a complete power cycle, which Sony includes in its no-image troubleshooting steps. Fully turn off the PS5 and TV, disconnect their power cables and wait 20 minutes. Reconnect the power cables and turn both devices on.
Adjust settings for the sounds that are missing
For missing game audio, KOEI TECMO recommends trying Linear PCM. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority), select Linear PCM and check the affected game.
If other games have sound, open the affected game’s own audio settings, remove any mute and raise its volume. The menu names depend on the game; KOEI TECMO gives Audio Volume as one example. If its audio controls do not help, highlight the game, press options and select Check for Update.
For an isolated media app problem, highlight the app, press options and select Check for Update. Updating is a maintenance step for an affected app, so continue with the remaining checks if it stays silent.
If only home screen music or interface effects are missing while game and video audio work, check the interface sound controls. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and turn on Home Screen Music and Sound Effects as needed.
If you use TV-speaker 3D audio, compare playback with stereo. Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV), turn off Enable 3D Audio for TV Speakers and check playback. Continue with the connection and software checks if the TV remains silent.
If 3D audio is hard to hear, particularly after moving the TV or your seating, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV) and repeat the room measurement from your usual seat. Disable the TV’s additional surround-sound processing and adjust its volume if the 3D effect changes loudness. These adjustments address poor audibility.
Update the console and connected equipment
Sony recommends updating PS5 system software when troubleshooting sound problems. Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. After updating, check whether sound has returned.
Check your TV, soundbar or receiver manufacturer’s firmware instructions for your model too. Install the latest supported update by following those instructions, since the controls and installation process depend on the equipment.
If normal PS5 updating fails, use a computer and a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive. On the drive, create a folder named PS5 and an UPDATE folder inside it. Download the PS5 console update file from the official system software download page and save it inside PS5/UPDATE as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Choose the update file, since the separate reinstallation procedure erases console data.
Insert the USB drive into the powered-off PS5, then hold power until the second beep. Connect the controller by USB and press PS. Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device, then select OK.
Use diagnostics and default settings as later options
On a compatible Samsung TV, open Settings, find Device Care, then select Self Diagnosis > Sound Test. This diagnostic helps distinguish a TV speaker problem from a PS5 or input problem. If your Samsung TV uses different menus, follow the instructions for that model.
If the simpler checks fail, restoring default PS5 settings is a later troubleshooting option. This resets your settings to their defaults while preserving installed content and saved data. Turn off the console, then hold power until the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first.
Connect the controller by USB and press PS, then select Restore Default Settings. Check the audio again after the settings have been restored, and continue to repair troubleshooting if sound still fails.
If broader system-feature problems accompany the missing sound, Sony also provides cache clearing and database rebuilding in Safe Mode. With the PS5 off, hold power until the second beep, then connect the controller by USB and press PS.
Clearing the system software cache removes that cache. Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then choose Clear System Software Cache to clear it or Rebuild Database for database rebuilding. Reserve these options for broader system-feature troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a steady DualSense mute light mean TV audio is muted?
A steady mute light indicates that your microphone is muted. It does not by itself indicate that TV audio is muted; a blinking light indicates the controller’s all-audio mute.
Do these checks apply to PS5 Pro and Digital Edition?
You can use the general PS5 checks on the original console, slim models, Digital Edition and PS5 Pro. TV and audio equipment controls still depend on the devices you have connected.
Can I use the HDMI cable included with my PS5?
You can use the HDMI cable included with your PS5. PlayStation lists it as suitable for the connection between your console and TV.
Will PlayStation Repairs be available under warranty in my region?
Service availability and warranty eligibility vary by region. Follow PlayStation Repairs from Sony’s picture and sound troubleshooting page to check the service route for your console.
