A Nintendo Switch virtual game card not working usually comes down to one of four things: the console needs an update, the wrong Nintendo Account is selected, the card is loaded somewhere else, or the game is hidden from the card list. The fix is to start with the fastest console checks, then move through account ownership, loading, redownload, console linking, and family lending.

Start with an update and restart

Virtual Game Cards require current system software. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings, choose System, then select System Update. Install any available update, let the console finish, and try Virtual Game Cards again.

Restart the console next. Press and hold the POWER Button for at least three seconds, open Power Options, and choose Restart. Once the system is back on, open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME Menu.

If the card still will not load, check the user and Nintendo Account that owns the game.

Choose the Nintendo Account that owns the game

The most common cause is opening Virtual Game Cards under a user whose Nintendo Account did not buy the game.

Go to the HOME Menu, open Virtual Game Cards, and select the user linked to the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. Digital purchases appear under the Nintendo Account that bought them, and a parent account's list does not include virtual game cards purchased by a child account.

For DLC, open the game's Nintendo eShop page and check Downloadable Content for items marked Purchased. To check purchase history in a browser, sign in at accounts.nintendo.com, open Funds and Payment Methods, then Transaction History. Nintendo shows account activity there for up to two years, and receipt emails cover purchases tied to the purchasing account or the parent or guardian email for child accounts.

Load the card from the HOME Menu

Open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME Menu and select your user. If the console asks for a user-verification PIN or Nintendo Account password, enter it.

Select the game that will not launch, then choose Load on This System. If the game is not already downloaded, its icon appears on the HOME Menu and the download begins.

When several purchased games disappeared at once, press X inside Virtual Game Cards to open Quick Load, labeled Load Multiple in some regions. Select the virtual game cards you want, choose Load or press the + Button, then confirm with OK.

Bring back a hidden or disabled card

Use this when a purchased game or DLC appears in the eShop but not in your Virtual Game Cards list. The card is hidden, or redownloading was disabled.

From the HOME Menu, open Virtual Game Cards, select the user linked to your Nintendo Account, and authenticate when prompted. Choose Can't Find Software?, open View Hidden Virtual Game Cards, sign in if asked, select the card, open Options, and choose Unhide.

If Nintendo eShop shows the item as Hidden Software or Set to Not Redownload, open the game's details page and press the + Button or - Button five times. The page changes to Virtual Game Cards. Load the card again to redownload it.

Redownload missing software or DLC

This fixes purchased games or DLC that belong to your Nintendo Account but are missing from the console.

Open Nintendo eShop and find the game or DLC information page.

Confirm that the page shows Virtual Game Cards or Purchased instead of a price.

Restart the console if Nintendo tells you to restart before continuing.

Return to the HOME Menu and open Virtual Game Cards.

Load the game or DLC card.

Wait for the download to complete on the HOME Menu, then launch the game.

Fix two console loading problems

Use this when the virtual game card loads on the wrong console, or your Nintendo Account already has two consoles linked for Virtual Game Cards. A Nintendo Account supports up to two Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch-family consoles for loading virtual game cards.

To add a second console, bring both consoles close together, connect both to the internet, and link the same Nintendo Account to a user on the second console. On the second console, open Virtual Game Cards, select the user, select a card, choose Load on This System, then choose Next and Systems Are Close Enough.

On the original console, open Virtual Game Cards, select the user, choose Link, and confirm with OK. If the new console asks again, choose Load on This System.

When two consoles are already linked, start the same loading flow on the new console and choose Next when told two consoles are already linked. Select Unlink next to the console you want to remove, confirm with Unlink and OK, then complete the nearby-console linking step.

Keep both consoles close together and try the link, lend, or borrow action again.

Restart both consoles by holding the POWER Button, opening Power Options, and choosing Restart.

Try a different network.

Put each console on a different network when available, such as home Wi-Fi for one console and a mobile hotspot for the other.

Wait at least 10 minutes, then try the Virtual Game Card action again.

Move metal objects and nearby electronics away from the consoles and router.

Test local communication with another local multiplayer feature, or test each console with a third console to identify hardware that needs service.

If one console keeps failing after the same tests, contact Nintendo Support for service.

Release a card stuck on another console

This fixes a virtual game card that cannot be loaded or ejected because another linked console is using it or is offline.

If Nintendo says the software is being played, close the running game on the other console.

On the console you want to use, open Virtual Game Cards.

Select your user.

Select the game.

Choose Load on This System or Load on Other System.

If Nintendo says the other console is offline, turn on that console and connect it to the internet.

Leave the other console in sleep mode while it stays connected, then retry the load or eject action from Virtual Game Cards or Account Home.

For a borrowed card, the borrower opens Virtual Game Cards, selects the borrowed game, chooses Return to Family Group Member, then confirms with Return.

For a lent card, the lender opens Virtual Game Cards, selects the lent game, chooses Collect from Family Group Member, then confirms with Collect.

Handle PIN and restriction blocks

A virtual game card can load and still be blocked by user verification or Parental Controls. On the user-verification PIN entry screen, press the + Button, choose Sign In, sign in to your Nintendo Account, and select OK. This deletes the PIN and changes verification to Nintendo Account sign-in.

If Parental Controls block the game, open System Settings from the HOME Menu, choose Parental Controls, then Change Settings. Enter the Parental Control PIN, choose Change Parental-Controls Settings, open Restriction Level, and pick an age setting that allows the game.

In the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, open Parental Controls, go to Allow List, add the game, and tap Save. To remove console restrictions entirely, use System Settings, Parental Controls, Change Settings, Delete Parental Controls, Delete, then OK.

If the card still fails after the PIN or restriction is cleared, use Online License Settings for extra consoles or contact Nintendo Support when a linked console is lost, stolen, offline, or unavailable.

Use current replacements for older sharing fixes

Older tutorials point to Nintendo eShop, Account Information, and Redownload as the main fix. On Nintendo Switch 2, Redownload opens the Virtual Game Cards path; on Nintendo Switch, previous redownload behavior has changed. Use Redownload only as an entry point, then load the card through Virtual Game Cards.

Primary Console registration and deregistration are not the current repair path for purchased digital games on current system versions. Digital game handling now runs through Virtual Game Cards, and Online License Settings is the current option for playing purchased digital content on more than two consoles without loading the virtual game card.

To use it, link your Nintendo Account to each console, open your user icon from the HOME Menu, choose Online License Settings, enable Use Online Licenses, download the games on each console, and launch the downloaded game from the HOME Menu while connected to the internet. The same Nintendo Account cannot play digital content on multiple consoles at the same time.

If none of the current loading, account, linking, and license fixes work, contact Nintendo Support, especially when you no longer have access to a linked console or the website unlink option has already been used within the past year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Nintendo Switch virtual game card missing?

It is under a different Nintendo Account, hidden from the Virtual Game Cards list, disabled for redownload, or loaded on another linked console.

Can I use one virtual game card on two consoles?

A Nintendo Account can link up to two Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch-family consoles for loading virtual game cards. Both consoles must be close together for the initial linking.

Why can’t I play a game that was lent to someone in my family group?

The lender cannot play the lent virtual game card until the borrower returns it, the lender collects it, or the loan expires. Borrowed cards work for up to 14 days.

Does deleting software remove my save data?

Nintendo states that using Delete Software does not delete related save data. This helps when fixing missing DLC for a physical game with separately purchased DLC.
