To fix a Nintendo Switch that is not connecting to your TV through HDMI, select the matching TV input, reconnect the dock with the correct power adapter, and connect HDMI directly to the TV. If the screen stays blank, check handheld operation before testing another HDMI cable, port, or display setting.

These steps cover Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch 2, with separate instructions where their accessories and menus differ. Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode, so an HDMI setting or adapter cannot enable TV output on that model.

The short version

  • Start with the input: Select the TV input that matches the HDMI socket connected to your dock.
  • Reconnect directly: Unplug the adapter at both ends for 30 seconds and reconnect the dock directly to the TV.
  • Match your model: Switch 2 needs its own compatible dock, power adapter, and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  • Narrow down the fault: Test another HDMI port, cable, TV, and compatible dock if the connection still fails.

Check the TV input and your accessories

Turn on the TV and use its input selector to choose the HDMI socket connected to your dock. Input-selector labels vary by TV, so match the selected input to the socket you used. If the picture remains blank, check the accessories before changing console settings.

For Nintendo Switch and OLED Model, use the Nintendo AC adapter HAC-002 with dock HAC-007 or HEG-007. The HEG-007 dock requires system version 11.0.0 or later, so update an older console before testing it with that dock. Replace incompatible accessories with these Nintendo accessories. Inspect the adapter, HDMI cable, and dock for damaged cables or loose connectors, and replace damaged accessories.

Switch 2 requires dock BEE-005 and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo recommends AC adapter NGN-01 with the dock; another AC adapter and cable can be used if the adapter's power output is at least 54 W. The original Switch power adapter cannot power Switch 2 TV Mode. Check these accessories for damage too, and replace any damaged accessories before continuing.

Reset dock power and reconnect directly

Turn off the TV, lift the console out of the dock, and disconnect the dock's cables. Unplug the AC adapter at both ends for 30 seconds. Then connect the correct adapter directly to the console and a wall outlet, and check whether the console works in handheld mode.

If handheld operation works, reconnect the dock's power supply to its AC ADAPTER port and a wall outlet. Connect the dock's HDMI OUT port directly to the TV. Temporarily bypass HDMI selectors, soundbars, receivers, and video adapters to check the direct connection.

Turn on the TV and select the connected HDMI input, then remove any protective case from the console. On Nintendo Switch and OLED Model, display the HOME Menu before docking. Insert the console with its screen facing the dock's front panel. On Nintendo Switch and OLED Model, if the dock indicator stays unlit, press the console's POWER button again.

Restart or recover a console that will not wake

If the console responds, hold POWER for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then select Restart. After it restarts, check handheld operation and retry the direct dock connection. If the handheld screen is blank or the console will not wake, use the power recovery sequence below.

Undock the unresponsive console and disconnect its adapter at both ends for 30 seconds. Hold POWER for 20 seconds, then release it. Reconnect the appropriate adapter directly to the console and a wall outlet, then press POWER once.

When a charging indicator briefly appears on the otherwise blank handheld screen, leave the console charging directly with the correct undamaged adapter for 15 to 30 minutes. Press POWER and check handheld operation again. If it still will not work in handheld mode, arrange service through Nintendo Support.

Try another HDMI port and cable

With handheld operation working, move the HDMI cable to another HDMI socket on the TV. Select that socket's input before checking the picture. If the screen remains blank, substitute a working HDMI cable; for Switch 2, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.

Next, connect the dock directly to another television and select its connected HDMI input. For Nintendo Switch and OLED Model, also try another Nintendo Switch AC adapter. Replace the original adapter if the replacement restores TV output; otherwise, continue with the software and resolution checks.

Update the console and compatible dock

While undocked, open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update. The console checks for an available update. Follow the steps to update your Nintendo Switch before checking whether your dock also needs an update.

On Nintendo Switch or OLED Model using the HEG-007 dock with a LAN port, update the console first. Then open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Update Dock and select Begin Update. The HAC-007 dock cannot receive this update, so continue to the resolution checks if that is your dock.

For Switch 2, connect to the internet, update the console, and keep it docked with a usable display. If another TV provides a picture, use it to open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Dock Update, then select Begin Update. Select OK if the dock is already current. If you cannot get a docked picture, continue with the remaining checks.

Adjust the TV resolution for your model

On Nintendo Switch or OLED Model, undock the console and open HOME Menu > System Settings > TV Settings > TV Resolution. Select 480p, then dock the console again. If the picture returns, test 720p or 1080p; Automatic is also available.

On Switch 2, open HOME Menu > System Settings > Display > TV Resolution and try Automatic. Handheld and tabletop modes offer only Automatic, so you must dock the console to choose a specific resolution. Check that both the TV and its selected HDMI port support the resolution you want.

If you can navigate Switch 2 settings while docked, test 720p (HD) or 1080p (Full HD) in the same menu. You may need another working TV to access those choices. Once an image is available, open HOME Menu > System Settings > Display > Video Output Information to inspect the video signal.

Turn off power synchronization on Switch or OLED

For Nintendo Switch and OLED Model, open HOME Menu > System Settings > TV Settings > Match TV Power State and turn it off. If your console uses the category name TV Output, open that category instead of TV Settings to find the setting. With power synchronization disabled, repeat the direct TV connection procedure. If the picture remains blank, continue to a compatible-dock test.

Test a compatible dock and arrange service

Try a working dock for the same console generation, using the compatible power supply and HDMI cable for your model. If the console displays correctly through that dock, arrange service for the original dock. Tell Nintendo that another dock restored the picture when requesting service.

If troubleshooting does not restore TV output, arrange service through Nintendo Support. Follow Nintendo's regional service instructions for which items to send, such as the dock, AC adapter, or HDMI cable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the TV picture look washed out or too dark?

Check RGB Range after HDMI output works. On Switch or OLED Model, open System Settings > TV Settings > RGB Range; on Switch 2, open System Settings > Display > RGB Range. Choose Automatic, or match Full Range or Limited Range to the TV's documented setting.

How do you fix a Switch picture that is cut off at the edges?

While docked with a visible picture, open System Settings > TV Settings > Adjust Screen Size on Switch or OLED Model. On Switch 2, open System Settings > Display > Adjust Screen Size. Adjust the displayed image boundaries.

What should you check when Switch 2 shows a picture but has no sound?

Unmute the TV, increase its volume, and disconnect headphones or speakers from the console's audio jack. Undock the console and run a game to check its speakers; if handheld audio works, reconnect HDMI directly to the TV and test again. You can also open System Settings > Audio > TV Sound and select Stereo, then check Audio Output Source > Automatic and select Test Output.

Which TV sound setting can you try on Switch or OLED Model?

Open System Settings > TV Settings > TV Sound and select Stereo. Try this especially when your audio equipment does not support multichannel PCM.

How can you make the TV turn on automatically with the console?

On a television that supports HDMI control, enable Match TV Power State under System Settings > TV Settings on Switch or OLED Model, or under System Settings > Display on Switch 2. Enable the TV's HDMI control feature using its model-specific instructions. This changes automatic power behavior; it does not repair a defective HDMI connection.

Why is Switch 2 not displaying at 120 Hz?

Check that the game supports 120 Hz and that the TV and connected HDMI port support it. Enable that capability for the connected input using the TV's manual. The HOME Menu and System Settings do not output at 120 Hz.
