Your Nintendo Switch docking station should move the game from handheld mode to the TV, but a blank screen, flashing dock light, or dead USB port stops that fast. The cause is usually the wrong dock, a broken power path, an HDMI connection problem, outdated firmware, or a TV setting that blocks clean output.
Start with the checks that rule out the biggest compatibility problems first. Then reset power, reconnect HDMI directly, update the system, and move into display or service fixes only when the basics are confirmed.
Confirm your Switch supports TV Mode
Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode. It will not send video to a TV through any dock.
Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED Model use Nintendo Switch dock model HAC-007 or the Nintendo Switch dock with LAN port model HEG-007. Nintendo Switch 2 uses Nintendo Switch 2 dock model BEE-005.
Nintendo Switch 2 also needs the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter model NGN-01 or another adapter and cable with at least 54W output. The older Nintendo Switch AC adapter model HAC-002 charges Switch 2 when plugged directly into the console, but it does not power the Switch 2 dock for TV Mode.
Reset the dock and power connection
Reset the dock power path before replacing cables or changing TV settings.
- 1.Turn off the TV and remove the console from the dock.
- 2.Disconnect every cable from the dock, including HDMI and power.
- 3.Unplug the AC adapter from the wall and from the dock or console for 30 seconds.
- 4.Connect the AC adapter directly to the console and directly to a wall outlet.
- 5.Leave the console undocked, then press the POWER Button if no image appears.
Reconnect HDMI without extra gear
The most common setup problem is an HDMI cable running through another device before it reaches the TV.
Plug the AC adapter into the dock and directly into a wall outlet. Connect the HDMI cable from the dock directly to an HDMI port on the TV.
Remove sound bars, home theater systems, video adapters, HDMI hubs, and similar devices while troubleshooting. Turn on the TV, choose the correct HDMI input, and place the console in the dock with the screen facing the same direction as the dock's front panel.
Take off protective cases before docking. A case that changes the fit prevents the console from seating correctly.
Restart when the dock light flashes
A flashing TV Output LED that does not stop after you dock the console points to a console or dock connection fault during TV output. A single flash that shuts off when you first plug the AC adapter into the dock is normal, and while the console is docked with the picture on the TV the LED should stay solid green. Undock the console first, then restart it from the POWER Button.
On Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED Model, hold the POWER Button for at least three seconds, then choose Power Options and Restart. If the console does not respond, hold the POWER Button for 12 seconds to force shutdown, then power it on again.
On Nintendo Switch 2, choose Power Options and Restart the same way. If it does not respond, hold the POWER Button for 20 seconds, then power it on again.
If the dock light keeps flashing, reset the AC adapter again, reconnect HDMI directly to the TV, and inspect the dock, power adapter, and HDMI cable for damage.
Update the system and dock firmware
Update the console first, then update dock firmware on dock models that support it.
- 1.From the HOME Menu, open System Settings, then go to System and System Update.
- 2.Let the console check for an available update and install it.
- 3.For Nintendo Switch OLED Model dock HEG-007, return to System, choose Update Dock, then select Begin Update.
- 4.For Nintendo Switch 2, dock the console, connect to the internet, return to System, choose Dock Update, then select Begin Update.
- 5.If a dock update stops before completion, start the update again.
Change the TV resolution or color output
If the dock works but the TV shows a blank, discolored, scrambled, distorted, or blurry picture, change the display settings from the console menu. On Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED Model, go to System Settings, then TV Settings, then TV Resolution, and choose Automatic, 480p, 720p, or 1080p.
For color compatibility, open TV Settings, then RGB Range, and choose Automatic, Full Range, or Limited Range.
On Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings, then Display. Adjust TV Resolution, RGB Range, 120 Hz Output, and HDR Output; set TV Resolution to Automatic when the desired resolution is not available.
If changing resolution and color settings does not fix the picture, try a different HDMI port, a different HDMI cable, and a different TV.
Check Switch 2 power and heat
This fixes Switch 2 docks that fail to enter docked mode or lose TV output because of power, cable, or ventilation problems.
Use the Nintendo Switch 2 dock BEE-005 with the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter NGN-01 or another adapter and cable rated for at least 54W output.
Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Ultra High Speed should be printed on the cable.
Unplug the Switch 2 AC adapter from the dock and power outlet for 20 seconds.
Plug it into the wall and directly into the USB-C port on the bottom of the console.
Confirm the console is charging.
If it is not charging, unplug the adapter and try the USB-C port at the top of the console.
If it still does not charge, try another AC adapter.
Plug the AC adapter back into the dock.
Re-dock the console and check whether the console screen goes black.
If the screen stays on while docked, send the dock in for service.
Make sure the console and dock are not warm, keep the console vents and dock vent uncovered, and remove accessories, stickers, decals, dust, and debris that block vents.
Place the console and dock in an open, ventilated area away from heat sources.
Fix dock USB ports
Dock USB issues are separate from TV output, but the reset path is similar. Update the console first, and update the dock firmware too if you use a dock with a built-in LAN port.
Test the accessory directly with the Nintendo Switch AC adapter model HAC-002. Nintendo lists compatible dock USB devices such as the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Joy-Con Charging Grip, Nintendo Switch LAN Adapter, and GameCube Controller Adapter.
Disconnect all cables from the dock, then leave the AC adapter disconnected from both ends for at least 30 seconds. Reconnect the AC adapter to the dock and wall outlet.
Use the USB charging cable model HAC-010 included with the Pro Controller or Charging Grip, inspect it for damage, and insert it fully into a USB port on the dock. Open Controllers from the HOME Menu to check controller charge.
If the accessory still does not register or charge, try a different USB port and a different USB charging cable.
Replace the dock or contact Nintendo
This fixes the decision point after the normal home troubleshooting is exhausted.
Inspect the AC adapter, HDMI cable, and dock for damage, including a frayed or split cord, loose connectors or USB ports, and kinks.
Replace damaged or non-licensed accessories.
For Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED Model, verify that the AC adapter is HAC-002 and the dock is HAC-007 or HEG-007.
Try a different HDMI port, a different HDMI cable, a different TV, and a different Nintendo Switch dock.
If another dock works, the original dock needs service.
Use Nintendo's Service Center flow when troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
U.S. and Canada users can set up a service request online or call Nintendo Consumer Service at 1-800-255-3700.
Skip generic USB-C-to-HDMI docks, old Switch dock gear for Switch 2, and DIY board or port repairs as consumer fixes. Nintendo's current consumer path is the correct dock and power hardware, direct HDMI troubleshooting, accessory replacement, or service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Nintendo Switch charge in the dock but show no picture on the TV?
The power side can work while the HDMI path fails. Connect HDMI directly from the dock to the TV, select the correct HDMI input, remove hubs or sound bars, then try another HDMI cable or TV port.
Can Nintendo Switch Lite work with a docking station?
No. Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode, so it cannot output video through a dock.
Which Nintendo Switch dock can I update?
For Nintendo Switch OLED Model, only the dock with LAN port model HEG-007 supports dock firmware updates. Nintendo Switch 2 docks can also be updated through System Settings.
What should I send in for service if the dock still fails?
Follow Nintendo's Service Center instructions. When Nintendo asks for them, include the dock, AC adapter, and HDMI cable with the service request.
