To fix Netflix playing sound without video, restart your device and, if you use an external display, check the HDMI cable and adapter. Play another title before resetting anything: if only one movie or episode has a missing picture, report that title through your Netflix account.

Use the fixes that match your device and symptoms, including the separate steps for frozen video or an unresponsive app. The Windows Settings steps below use Windows 11 menus.

The short version

  • Restart first: Disconnect your TV or streaming player from power for three minutes, reconnect it, and retry Netflix.
  • Check the connection: For an external display, test the HDMI cable, TV port, and connection without a receiver.
  • Match your device: Follow the app or browser steps for the device playing Netflix.
  • Protect downloads: Clearing Netflix’s Android app data or resetting its iPhone or iPad app removes downloaded titles.

Restart your TV or streaming device

Disconnect your smart TV, TV-connected player, or console from power. Leave it disconnected for three minutes, then reconnect it and try Netflix again. Alternatively, press the device’s Power button once after disconnecting it, wait one minute, then reconnect it.

For a Samsung smart TV, hold the remote’s Power button until the TV switches off and back on, which takes approximately five seconds. Samsung also gives unplugging it for 30 seconds as an alternative. Retry playback after it starts.

If the picture is frozen while sound continues on Fire TV, press Home, open Settings, select My Fire TV, then select Restart. On an Android TV that supports restarting with the remote, hold Power until the television restarts. Try Netflix again after the restart.

Check the cable connection to your display

For a streaming player, console, or computer connected to an external display, use an HDMI connection and reverse the cable ends. Connect the playback device directly to the TV to bypass a receiver, then try Netflix again.

If the picture stays black, try another HDMI port on the television, then another HDMI cable. Test another television as well. If you are watching directly on a phone, tablet, or computer screen, continue with the app or browser fixes.

Use a supported connection from your phone

Netflix says AirPlay, Apple screen mirroring, and Mac to iPad Sidecar playback are unsupported, so watch directly on the device or use a supported TV connection. To stop mirroring on an iPhone, open Control Center, select Screen Mirroring, then select Stop Mirroring. Retry Netflix on the phone.

With a USB-C iPhone or iPad connected to an external display, select the display’s correct input and use an HDCP 2.2-compatible adapter or cable. Reverse the cable ends or try another display port if the picture remains missing.

For a Lightning iPhone or iPad, disconnect the cables from the adapter, then attach the adapter to the phone or tablet. Open Settings > General > About > Apple HDMI Adapter and check Model Number. Netflix supports A1438 and A1621; replace an unsupported adapter, or test another HDMI cable or port with a supported one.

Netflix lists mobile casting support for Chromecast third generation or earlier without a remote, Google Nest Hub displays, and selected Vizio and Compal TVs. Casting requires a Standard or Premium plan. For those receivers, choose a profile in Netflix’s mobile app, tap the Cast icon, select the receiving device, then select a title. For receivers outside that supported list, open Netflix using the receiving device’s own remote.

Refresh Netflix on your phone or tablet

On Android, completely power off your phone or tablet, then power it on and retry Netflix. Locking the screen is not enough. Open Netflix’s Google Play listing and tap Update when offered.

If Netflix freezes or stops responding on an iPhone or iPad with a Home button, double-press it to open the app switcher; on models without it, swipe upward from the bottom and pause. Swipe Netflix upward, then reopen it. You can also open Netflix’s App Store listing and tap Update when available.

If the iPhone or iPad app remains frozen, hold the Side button and a Volume button until the power slider appears; older devices use Sleep/Wake. Slide to power off, wait ten seconds, then power it on again. Retry Netflix before resetting its data.

Clearing Netflix’s Android app data removes downloaded titles and requires you to sign in again. Hold the Netflix icon, select App info, open Storage & cache, then select Clear storage and OK. Reopen Netflix and sign in. Menu wording varies by manufacturer, so ask your device manufacturer for help if the controls differ.

Resetting Netflix on an iPhone or iPad deletes downloads and requires you to sign in again. Open Settings > Apps > Netflix and turn on Reset, then reopen Netflix and sign in. On older systems, open Settings > Netflix directly.

Check playback in your browser

Try the same title in another supported browser at netflix.com. On Windows, Netflix supports Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera; on Mac, it also supports Safari. Check Netflix’s minimum operating-system and browser requirements before installing a different browser.

To update desktop Chrome, open More > Help > About Google Chrome and let the update check finish. Select Relaunch when offered, then try Netflix again.

In desktop Edge, open Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge. Select Download and install for an offered update or Restart to apply one already downloaded. If updates are controlled on a managed device, ask your administrator to enable them.

For Mozilla-distributed Firefox, open the menu’s Help or Help and Report entry and select About Firefox, allow the update to download, then select Restart to update Firefox. Microsoft Store and Linux-distribution versions use their respective update systems. If you use Safari, install the latest compatible operating-system update on your Apple device, since Safari updates arrive with the OS.

For blank or nonplaying media in desktop Chrome, open More > New Incognito Window and test Netflix. If playback works there, return to the normal window and open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Disable extensions, then re-enable them individually to identify which one interferes.

Firefox’s Troubleshoot Mode temporarily isolates extensions, themes, and graphics acceleration. Hold Shift while launching Firefox on Windows, or Option on Mac, then select Open in the troubleshooting dialog. Test Netflix in that mode.

If Troubleshoot Mode helps, open Settings > General > Performance; in the newer layout, open Settings > Tabs and browsing > Performance. Uncheck Use recommended performance settings, then uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available. Fully quit Firefox, restart it, and retry playback.

You can also open Menu > Extensions and Themes > Extensions and switch extensions off, testing them individually. To check the theme, open Themes and enable System. Restart Firefox and try Netflix again.

Update Windows and your graphics driver

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for Windows updates. Select Download & install when offered, then restart if requested. Retry Netflix after the update finishes.

On Windows 11, you can also find and update your graphics driver through Device Manager. Right-click Start, select Device Manager, expand the display-device category, then right-click your GPU and select Update driver. Follow the update dialog, whose wording can vary.

Resetting the Windows Netflix app resets its sign-in state. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open Netflix’s menu, select Advanced options, then select Reset twice. If the installed app does not expose Advanced options, try playback in a supported browser.

Refresh a frozen TV app

If Netflix is frozen or unresponsive on Apple TV 4K, press the remote’s TV button twice quickly. Navigate to Netflix and swipe up on the clickpad or touch surface to close it, then reopen the app.

Deleting Netflix from Apple TV 4K removes its app data. Highlight Netflix on the Home Screen, hold the clickpad or touch surface, then select Delete App and Delete. Find Netflix in the App Store and select Get or Install.

On a compatible Samsung TV, open Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now. Allow installation and the restart to finish before trying Netflix. If your model uses different menus, or the picture still fails after the connection checks, ask the manufacturer for model-specific picture and firmware troubleshooting.

Report a problem with one movie or episode

If another title plays correctly, report the affected movie or episode through your Netflix account. Open the web Account page, select Profiles, choose your profile, and open Viewing activity. Find the affected title and select Report a problem.

Select Problems with video (blurry, cuts out, or looks strange in some way), add details, then select Report Problem. Sign in only through Netflix’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Netflix black on a PS4 Pro connected through PSVR?

Netflix identifies an HDR conflict when your PS4 Pro connects through first-generation PSVR CUH-ZVR1. In the PS4 Settings menu, open Video Output Settings and make sure HDR is set to Off. Alternatively, disconnect PSVR to retain HDR playback.

Should you restart the router when Netflix has no picture?

Network troubleshooting is relevant when playback also fails to load or has connectivity problems. Run fast.com, then power off your playback device and unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds. Reconnect them, wait for connectivity, and restart playback.

What if the entire Windows display goes blank?

On Windows 11 or Windows 10, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. You may hear a beep or see a brief display flicker indicating the reset. Microsoft provides this shortcut for a blank display, so use it when the display itself goes blank.

Why does updating Netflix on an older iPhone not give you the latest app?

You need iOS or iPadOS 26 or later for Netflix’s latest app. Reinstalling an older compatible version does not give you that latest version.
