Minecraft says “Failed to connect to server,” but the message doesn’t tell you whether the trouble is with your game, your account, or the host. Start by checking the edition, address, and required version, then use the account and connection fixes for your device. Realms and worlds hosted on your home network have their own checks below.
Check the edition and server address first
Start here when you cannot join a server, especially when entering its details yourself. Ordinary Java and Bedrock servers are not interchangeable.
Ask the owner whether the server runs Java or Bedrock.
Launch the matching edition.
For Java, get the current server address from the owner.
Open Multiplayer > Direct Connection.
Enter the supplied address.
For a featured Bedrock server, open Play > Servers.
Select the intended server.
Select Join Server.
Select proceed on the online-play warning to connect.
For a custom Bedrock server on a computer or mobile device, open Play > Servers > Add Server.
Enter a name in Server name.
Enter the owner’s address in Server address.
Enter the owner’s configured port. The default is 19132; use a different value when the owner specifies one.
Select Play to connect now, or Save to add it to your server list.
Match your game version to the server
Ask the owner which release the server requires. In Java’s Minecraft Launcher, open Installations and select that version.
For a Java server requiring the newest release, choose Latest Release beside Play. Select Play to download and launch it.
On Bedrock, Outdated Client means you need to update your game; Outdated Server means the owner needs to update the server. Patch releases can change compatibility, so both sides need compatible builds.
Launch regular Minecraft for an ordinary release server. A Preview server needs a compatible Preview client, and everyone joining a Preview/Beta Realm must use Preview/Beta.
Install updates on your platform
On Windows, open Microsoft Store.
Select Check for Updates.
Install the available Minecraft, Minecraft Launcher, and Xbox app updates.
On Xbox, select Minecraft in My Apps & Games.
Press the controller’s more-options button.
Choose Manage game & add-ons > Updates.
On PlayStation, highlight Minecraft.
Press the controller’s options button.
Select Check for Update.
Install any available update.
On Nintendo Switch, highlight Minecraft on HOME without launching it.
Press + or −.

Allow multiplayer for a child account
A parent or family organizer must change these settings when a child’s Microsoft account restricts multiplayer.

Close Minecraft before changing accounts.
On Windows, open the Xbox app.
Select PROFILE AND SETTINGS > SIGN OUT.
Use PROFILE AND SETTINGS > SIGN IN to sign into the intended Microsoft account.
Restart Minecraft.
On an Xbox console, press the Xbox button.
Select Profile & System > Sign Out.

Check the network connection
A failed home-network connection prevents Minecraft from reaching the server.
For a home connection problem, unplug the modem and router for at least 30 seconds.
Reconnect the modem.
Wait until the modem is ready.
Reconnect the router.
On Windows 11, run the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help.
On a Mac, hold Option while clicking Wi-Fi in the menu bar or Control Center.
Select Open Wireless Diagnostics.
On Mac, iPhone, or iPad, try a different network to narrow down the connection problem.
If an installed VPN or filtering app is interfering, temporarily disable its relevant filtering feature.
Test the connection again.
For Bedrock on a phone using cellular service, open Minecraft’s Settings > General.
Enable Use Mobile Data.
Give local worlds LAN access
For Java LAN play, connect both computers to the same local network. LAN is the local network shared by devices in your home.
Have the host load the world and open the pause menu. Select Open to LAN, then Start LAN World.
On the joining computer, open Multiplayer and select the discovered world.
For Bedrock LAN play on an iPhone or iPad, open the device’s Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network. Enable Minecraft.
Let Minecraft through the host firewall
An application exception addresses firewall blocks on the game or server.
On Windows, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall > Change settings.
Enable the relevant game or server application if it is listed.
If it is missing, select Allow another app.
Select the application’s actual executable. After changing Java installations, select the executable from the new installation.
For a Windows-hosted Java LAN world on a trusted home network, close Minecraft before adjusting the network profile.
Right-click the taskbar network icon.
Open Network & Internet settings > Properties for your home connection.
Under Network Profile Type, select Private. Apply this only to a trusted network.
Reopen Minecraft.
Use Open to LAN to host the world again.
For Java hosting on a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options.
Add the relevant application or service with the + button.
Allow its incoming connections.
Ask the owner to check the server
A closed, full, or access-restricted server blocks players from joining.
For a Realm, ask the owner to confirm that the subscription is active and the Realm is open.
If the Realm is active and open but the connection still fails, ask the owner to close it.
Have the owner reopen the Realm to retry the connection.
On a console, check that your own account has an active subscription that includes online multiplayer. The Realm owner’s subscription does not replace that requirement.
If a Bedrock dedicated server started rejecting you after an update, ask the owner to check its allowlist, the list of players permitted to join. Bedrock 26.30 enabled it by default.
Have the owner add your gamertag with /allowlist add "Gamer Tag", replacing Gamer Tag with your actual gamertag.
For a full Bedrock dedicated server, wait for an open player slot.
The owner can review max-players in server.properties to change the player limit. Increasing it adds hosting load.
If you are joining a self-hosted server from outside its home network, ask the owner to check router port forwarding for the server’s actual port.
Ask the owner to check the host-firewall rules for that port as well. Both checks belong on the hosting network.

Should I reinstall Minecraft Launcher to fix a server connection error?
Reinstalling the Launcher is not a universal server-connection fix. If you need a replacement installation, get it from Minecraft’s official download page or Microsoft Store on Windows.
Do I need to install a different Java version?
Use the official Launcher’s included runtime. A manually maintained server or custom runtime must meet its Minecraft release’s requirement. Minecraft 26.1 requires Java 25.
What can I try last if my device still has general network problems?
On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Select Reset now, then Yes. Reconfigure networking software afterward if necessary. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved network passwords and cellular, VPN, and APN settings.
What if my school or work device blocks Minecraft?
Ask the administrator to permit the connection when organizational settings control the firewall or network filtering. A policy that blocks all incoming connections overrides individual application exceptions.
