Microsoft Teams screen sharing breaks when the meeting, device, browser, or app session blocks the share tray. The fastest fix is to check the live meeting controls first, then move through permissions, browser support, updates, and cache cleanup.
Use the section that matches how you joined the meeting. Each fix below sticks to current Teams and macOS paths, so you are not chasing old Classic Teams workarounds.
Start Sharing From the Meeting Controls
In the Teams meeting, select Share in the meeting controls. Choose your entire screen, a window, or another available sharing option.
If the share tray stalls, leave the meeting and join again. Select Share once more after you reconnect.
On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + E during the meeting to toggle the share content tray. While sharing, press Ctrl + Shift + Spacebar to move focus to the sharing toolbar.
Check Your Meeting Role
Attendees cannot share content in a Teams meeting. You need to be the organizer, a co-organizer, or a presenter before Share works.
Ask the meeting organizer to open the meeting controls and select Controls. Have them choose View more options, open Roles, and change Who can present.
They can choose Everyone or set you as a presenter. If this method fails, restart Teams, rejoin the meeting, and move on to the permission checks below.
Give Teams Permission on Your Mac
The most common Mac cause is missing Screen & System Audio Recording permission for Teams or the browser you use for Teams on the web.
In the meeting, select Share. When Teams asks for screen recording access, select Allow.
If Teams sends you to settings, select Open System Settings. Open Screen & System Audio Recording, turn on Microsoft Teams, return to the meeting, select Allow, and select Share again.
To set the permission manually, open the Apple menu and choose System Settings. Select Privacy & Security, open Screen & System Audio Recording, turn on Microsoft Teams, or use the Add button to add it, then reopen Teams.
Use the Mac Sharing Mode in Teams
Open Teams on your Mac and select Settings and more.
Choose Settings.
Open General.
Find Screen sharing and select Use macOS content sharing.
Return to the meeting and select Share again.
Keep control requests out of this mode because giving and taking control are not supported in the native macOS sharing experience.
Switch Browsers for Teams on the Web
Teams on the web needs a supported desktop browser. Use one of the latest three versions of Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox, or one of the latest two versions of Safari on macOS.
For outgoing screen sharing on the web, join the meeting at teams.microsoft.com in Google Chrome or the latest Microsoft Edge. Select Share, then choose Screen, Window, or Tab.
Mobile browsers do not support Teams on the web. If this method fails, open the Teams desktop app, especially when the broken feature is giving or taking control of shared content.
Allow Browser Permissions for Teams Web
In Chrome, open Settings.
Go to Privacy and security.
Select Site settings.
Open Permissions and allow the relevant Teams site permissions.
In Safari, choose Safari > Settings, labeled Preferences on older macOS versions, then click Websites. Select the feature you need in the sidebar, such as Camera, Microphone, or Screen Sharing, then set When visiting other websites to Ask or Allow.
On a Mac, also grant Screen & System Audio Recording permission to your browser in System Settings.
Close and reopen the browser before joining the meeting again.
Update or Reinstall Teams
This fixes stale app sessions, outdated installs, and desktop clients that stop showing the share tray correctly.
On desktop, leave Teams idle so it can update automatically, or select Update when it appears at the top of the Teams window. Choose Update and restart Teams.
To check your version, open Settings and more, choose Settings, select About Teams, and look under Version for Update now.
If updating does not fix screen sharing, uninstall Teams and install it again from Microsoft’s official Teams download page or your device’s official app store.
Use the Desktop App for Control Problems
Screen sharing and shared-screen control are different features. Giving and taking control require the Teams desktop app for both people.
Browser users cannot give or take control. Mobile users cannot give or take control either.
Join the meeting from the Teams desktop app on both computers. Share your screen again, then select Give control from the presenter toolbar.
If this method fails, select your profile picture, choose Sign out, sign back in, and rejoin the meeting.
Reset Teams When Nothing Else Works
Use these cleanup steps after the meeting role, Mac permission, browser, update, and reinstall fixes fail.
- 1.On Windows, open Settings, select Apps, choose Installed apps, search for Microsoft Teams, open More options, choose Advanced options, then select Reset.
- 2.To clear the new Teams cache on Windows, quit Teams from the taskbar, press Windows logo key + R, enter %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams, select OK, delete the files and folders there, then restart Teams.
- 3.On macOS, quit Teams from the Dock or press Command + Q, open Terminal, run rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams, then run rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2.
- 4.If your Mac uses a docking station or DisplayLink setup, update macOS and close unused apps to reduce memory pressure before trying to share again.
- 5.For a work or school device, ask your IT admin to check Meetings > Meeting policies > Content sharing for screen sharing, presenter defaults, and give/request control settings. The external-meeting control, Participants can share content in external meetings hosted by, applies to users with a Teams Premium license.
Skip old advice that tells you to switch back to Classic Teams; update, reset, or reinstall the current Teams app instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I share my phone screen in Teams?
Yes. In a Teams mobile meeting or call, tap More options, choose Share, select Share screen, then tap Start presenting. To include mobile audio, use Share screen with audio and tap Start Broadcast. Mobile audio sharing needs a device running at least Android 10 or iOS 13.
What browser should I use when Teams web will not screen share?
Use Google Chrome or the latest Microsoft Edge for outgoing screen sharing at teams.microsoft.com. Teams on the web is for supported desktop browsers, not mobile browsers.
Why does Teams screen sharing fail on a work or school account?
A Teams meeting policy can block screen sharing, presenter access, external-meeting sharing, or give/request control. Ask an admin to check Meetings > Meeting policies > Content sharing.
Does Teams Cast fix regular meeting screen sharing?
No. Use Cast for a nearby Teams Room or Surface Hub. For a normal meeting, use Share inside the meeting controls.
