Minecraft lag comes from low frame rates, network delays, or a world with too much to process. The right fix depends on which problem you have and whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition. Start with a quick comparison, then use the settings below that match your edition and device.
Start with a quick performance check
Compare performance in the same location after each change so you know which adjustment helps.
- 1.In Java Edition 1.21.9 or later, press F3 + F6 to open Debug Options, then select Performance to inspect your frame rate.
- 2.In Java, open Options > Video Settings > Render Distance and move the slider lower. In Bedrock, lower Render Distance; the available range depends on your device and server.
- 3.Compare performance in the same place before changing anything else. In Java, F3 toggles the debug overlay.
- 4.For multiplayer delays, test another server. In Java's multiplayer server list, compare connection bars to choose one with a better connection.
Give Java's graphics settings some breathing room
On Java 1.21.11 or later, open Options > Video Settings > Quality & Performance > Preset and choose Fast. For individual adjustments, turn off See-Through Leaves under Quality & Performance. Mojang identifies a performance benefit from disabling it.
Disable Show Vignette in Video Settings, then reduce Weather Effect Radius. Set Texture Filtering in Video Settings to None to avoid the additional cost of RGSS filtering. The result depends on your hardware and previous filtering choice.
In Java 26.3, turn off Improved Transparency in Video Settings to test whether its transparency algorithm is costing you performance. F3 + X toggles the same setting with the default binding. If performance dropped after selecting Prefer Vulkan (Experimental) on Java 26.2 or later, change Video Settings > Graphics API to Default.
Mojang notes that Default currently behaves the same as Prefer OpenGL but may change; if a later default causes problems, select Prefer OpenGL in the same control. Vulkan remains experimental, with no guaranteed FPS improvement. Test each adjustment in the same location before changing another setting.
Dial back Bedrock's Vibrant Visuals
Use these controls when you already have Vibrant Visuals enabled on a supported Bedrock device. Start with its performance preset before turning the graphics mode off.
Open Settings > Video > Graphics Mode > Vibrant Visuals and choose Favor Performance in its controls. For individual adjustments, expand Vibrant Visuals Options under Settings > Video.
Reduce the available visual-quality settings one at a time. The controls vary by device. To turn Vibrant Visuals off, open Settings > Video > Graphics Mode before loading a world and select Simple or Fancy.
Tackle connection delays in multiplayer
These changes address network delay and connection instability. Connect your gaming device directly to the router with Ethernet if it has an Ethernet port or supported adapter.
For Wi-Fi, move your device closer to the router. Reduce obstructions between the router and your device, then test another Wi-Fi band supported by both devices.
On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Inspect the Network column under Processes for downloads or streaming applications using bandwidth. Close the unnecessary applications you identified.
To restart your network equipment, disconnect the modem and router from power. Wait at least 30 seconds, then reconnect the modem and let it initialize. Reconnect the router and rejoin the network.
If you own a Realm, choose a nearby or geographically balanced location through Specific Region in its hosting-region settings. This sets a preference; it does not guarantee that location.
For a Realm using Automatic, first to join, have everyone leave for a few minutes. Have the player in the preferred location join first, then check the hosting region displayed while the Realm loads.
Free up your Windows PC's resources
On Windows 11, reduce competing workloads and check which hardware Minecraft uses.
- 1.Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Inspect Processes and Performance, then close unnecessary applications and browser tabs.
- 2.Restart the PC through Start > Power > Restart.
- 3.On devices offering the setting, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance. This increases power consumption.
- 4.On a computer with multiple GPUs, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Select the game under Custom options for apps, choose Options > High performance > Save, then restart the game. For Java, target the running
javaw.exerather than only the launcher. - 5.On a compatible NVIDIA PC, open NVIDIA App and select Drivers > Download > Install to update the graphics driver.
- 6.If your drive is nearly full, open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files. Select expendable files and choose Remove files.
Lighten the load in a busy world
These changes reduce world-processing and content demands. Lower Simulation Distance for a Bedrock world you host. This controls how far from players the game processes mechanics such as mobs, plant growth and fluids, and it costs more performance than render distance.
As a Java 26.3 Realm owner, lower the render-distance slider in the Realm configuration settings. Lower the simulation-distance slider there as well.
Reduce unnecessary entities in loaded Bedrock areas, especially dense groups of mobs performing pathfinding. This requires changing the world itself; there is no universal cleanup button.
Test a separate plain Bedrock world with fewer Add-Ons and lower-resolution textures. Both consume resources, particularly on devices with limited memory. Back up a valued world before removing content it depends on.
Ease phone and tablet slowdowns
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Battery and turn off Low Power Mode where offered. This removes its power-saving restrictions. Let an excessively hot or cold iPhone or iPad return to a moderate temperature before testing again.
If Minecraft becomes unresponsive, open the app switcher by swiping up from the bottom or double-clicking the Home button on older devices. Swipe Minecraft's preview upward, then reopen the game. Apple advises against routinely force-closing responsive apps.
On Android, free storage when less than 10% remains. If the whole phone is slow, restart it using your manufacturer's power-button procedure. Then remove suspected problem apps from your recent installations one at a time, retesting after each removal.
Bring the game and Java runtime up to date
For Java Edition, open Minecraft Launcher. Use the version selector beside Play to choose Latest Release, then launch the game.
Test that release with the official launcher's default runtime and JVM configuration. Since Java 26.1, the bundled runtime is Microsoft OpenJDK 25, with defaults that include a 4 GB allocation and ZGC on compatible devices. Use Java 25 for version 26.1 and later. Older Java 8, 17, or 21 runtime instructions and memory recipes based on a 2 GB default do not apply to this configuration.
Use Quality & Performance > Preset > Fast when adjusting graphics in current Java. The former Graphics > Fast control belongs to versions before 1.21.11.
On iPhone, iPad, or Android, search for Minecraft in the App Store or Google Play. Install its available update.
On Xbox, select Minecraft in your games library. Press the more-options button, then choose Manage game & add-ons > Updates.
On PS4, highlight Minecraft. Press the controller's OPTIONS button, then select Check for Update.
On Nintendo Switch, highlight Minecraft on the HOME Menu. Press + or −, then select Software Update > Via the Internet.
Use the official launcher for the default-configuration comparison; third-party launchers have their own runtime and memory configurations.
Try Sodium for Java rendering performance
If Java still needs better rendering performance, Sodium is a third-party option supported by its developer, CaffeineMC. Select the release matching your exact Minecraft version. Sodium 0.9.2 supports Minecraft 26.3. If you also use Iris, install Iris 1.11.6 for Fabric 26.3, which requires the matching Sodium 0.9.2 build.
For manual installation, install a compatible Fabric Loader using Fabric's official installer, selecting your Minecraft version. Download the matching Sodium release from CaffeineMC's release page, then place the downloaded mod in that installation's mods folder.
For the Modrinth App alternative, open your instance and select Add Content. Find Sodium and select the version matching the instance.
For Prism Launcher, open the instance's Edit > Mods > Download Mods controls. Search for Sodium and select a matching release.
If Sodium does not help, compare performance using the official launcher's default configuration and a lower Render Distance. For delays limited to multiplayer, return to the connection and host-side checks: rendering changes do not resolve network latency or slow server simulation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check whether my local network is causing Minecraft lag?
On Windows 11, run the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. For a local-router check, run ipconfig in Command Prompt, note Default Gateway, then run ping <gateway-address> using that address. This checks your connection to the router, not Minecraft's frame rate.
Will reinstalling Minecraft fix lag?
Reinstallation repairs installation problems; it is not a universal lag cure. Use the official Minecraft download page for the launcher or platform download, and back up your worlds before removing game data.
What if Minecraft started lagging after an NVIDIA driver update?
If NVIDIA App retains your previous driver, open Drivers and find that driver. Open its three-dot menu and select Reinstall.
How do I reduce the performance cost of recording Minecraft?
In NVIDIA Overlay, press Alt + F9 to stop an active manual recording. To reduce recording settings, press Alt + Z, open the settings cog, and select Video capture. The performance effect depends on the recording workload.
