Instagram Stories break in a few familiar ways: the tray will not load, uploads stall, the camera opens black, audio will not record, or Add to story disappears. Start with the quickest app and connection fixes, then move into permissions, storage, account settings, and the web version.

1. Restart Instagram and your phone

A stuck session can make Stories look broken even when your account, phone, and connection are fine.

  • iPhone: open the App Switcher, swipe to Instagram, swipe up on it, then reopen Instagram from the Home Screen or App Library.
  • iPad: open Exposé, swipe up on Instagram, then reopen it from the Home Screen, App Library, or Dock.
  • Android: swipe up from the bottom, hold, let go, then swipe up on Instagram.

If Instagram still refuses to behave on Android, force stop it:

  1. 1.Open Settings.
  2. 2.Tap Apps.
  3. 3.Tap See all apps.
  4. 4.Choose Instagram.
  5. 5.Tap Force stop.
  6. 6.Tap OK, then reopen Instagram.

When the whole phone feels stuck, restart it. On most Android phones, hold the Power button for about 30 seconds or tap Restart when it appears. On iPhone, power it off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

2. Update Instagram from the official store

  • iPhone or iPad: open the App Store, tap your account button or photo, tap App Updates, then tap Update next to Instagram. You can also open Instagram in the App Store and tap Update, Get, or Open.
  • Android: open Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, tap Manage apps & devices, then update Instagram under Updates available. You can also open Instagram in Google Play and tap Update, Install, or Open.

An old Instagram build is simple to rule out, but use only the official App Store or Google Play listing. If Update is not shown, the store build available for your device is already installed.

3. Fix Wi-Fi mobile data and low-data settings

  1. 1.Test Stories on Wi-Fi.
  2. 2.Turn Wi-Fi off and test again on mobile data.
  3. 3.On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular, then turn Cellular Data off and back on.
  4. 4.For iPhone LTE or 4G, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options, then turn Low Data Mode off.
  5. 5.For iPhone 5G, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode, then choose Standard or Allow More Data on 5G.
  6. 6.On Android, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data, then turn on Instagram.

Stories depend on media loading and uploading, so check the network before digging deeper into the app. Then check Instagram's own data setting:

  1. 1.Open Instagram.
  2. 2.Tap your profile picture.
  3. 3.Open Menu.
  4. 4.Tap Settings and activity.
  5. 5.Open Your app and media.
  6. 6.Tap Media quality or Data usage and media quality.
  7. 7.Turn Data Saver off.

4. Give Instagram camera microphone and photo access

If the Stories camera opens black, audio does not record, or your gallery will not appear, permissions are the fix to check. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and turn Instagram on.

  1. 1.Go back to Privacy & Security > Microphone.
  2. 2.Turn Instagram on.
  3. 3.Open Privacy & Security > Photos > Instagram.
  4. 4.Choose Full Access, or choose Limited Access and select the photos and videos you need.

On Android, use the permission manager:

  1. 1.Open Settings.
  2. 2.Tap Security & Privacy.
  3. 3.Tap Privacy.
  4. 4.Open Permission manager.
  5. 5.Check Camera, Microphone, Photos and videos, or Files. On older Android versions, Files may appear as Files and media.
  6. 6.Choose Instagram.
  7. 7.Select Allow only while using the app or the relevant Allow option.

5. Clear app data or reinstall Instagram

  1. 1.On Android, open Settings.
  2. 2.Tap Apps.
  3. 3.Choose Instagram.
  4. 4.Tap Storage or Storage & cache.
  5. 5.Tap Clear cache.
  6. 6.If Stories are still broken and you can sign in again, tap Clear storage or Clear data. This signs you out and resets app data.

Android gives you a direct cache button. iPhone and iPad need a reinstall for the clean reset:

  1. 1.Touch and hold Instagram.
  2. 2.Tap Remove App.
  3. 3.Tap Delete App.
  4. 4.Tap Delete.
  5. 5.Open the App Store.
  6. 6.Search for Instagram.
  7. 7.Tap Get or the Redownload button.

You can also offload and reinstall on iPhone or iPad with Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage > Instagram > Offload App > Reinstall App. Use the full delete when corrupted app data is the target.

6. Free storage and update the phone

  • iPhone or iPad storage: open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage, then follow the recommendations or remove unused items.
  • Android storage: open Settings > Storage, then free space from there.
  • iPhone or iPad update: back up the device, plug it into power, connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > Software Update and install the available update.
  • Android update: open Settings > System > Software update, or open About phone or About tablet > Software update on phones that use that path.

Low storage hits Stories hardest when recording, saving, processing, or uploading media. Google says phones can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.

7. Check sharing replies and account status

Sometimes Stories load correctly, but one Instagram setting blocks the exact action you want.

  1. 1.If Add to story is missing while sharing someone else's feed post, the original account must be public and must allow resharing of posts.
  2. 2.If other people cannot share your posts or reels to their Stories, open your profile, tap Menu > Sharing and reuse > Posts and reels to stories, then turn the toggle on.
  3. 3.If other people cannot share your Story to their Story, open Settings > Sharing and reuse > Stories to stories, then choose Everyone, Followers you follow back, or Off.
  4. 4.If Story replies are not working the way you expect, open your profile, tap Menu > Messages and story replies or Settings and activity > Story replies, then choose who can reply to your Stories.
  5. 5.If posting features are unavailable, open your profile, tap Menu, then under More info and support tap Account Status. Review removed content, Features you can't use, and any Request review options.

8. Test Instagram on the web and report the problem

Open instagram.com, log in, and check whether the Stories tray loads. If Stories work on the web and fail only in the app, return to the app fixes above. If Instagram on the web is stale, clear browser site data for instagram.com.

  • Chrome on computer: open More > Delete browsing data, choose a time range, select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then click Delete data.
  • Safari on iPhone or iPad: open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data > Remove Now.
  • Safari on Mac: open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, then remove instagram.com or remove all website data.

For browser camera or microphone problems in Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings, choose Camera or Microphone, select instagram.com, and change the permission to Allow.

If none of the fixes work, report it inside Instagram: open your profile, tap Menu > Help > Report a Problem, then follow the onscreen steps. Do not use third-party Story viewers, unofficial APK downloads, APK downgrades, iPhone Clear Search History as a cache reset, or Android recovery wipe cache partition as Stories fixes. Those are not current vendor-supported fixes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Instagram Stories not loading but posts still load?

Stories rely on media loading and preloading. Restart Instagram, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, turn off Low Data Mode or Data Saver restrictions, then turn off Instagram's Data Saver setting.

Why is my Instagram Story camera black?

Give Instagram camera access. On iPhone, use Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera > Instagram. On Android, use Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager > Camera > Instagram.

Why can't I add someone else's post to my Story?

Instagram requires the original account to be public and to allow resharing of posts. If Add to story is missing, that account's privacy or resharing setting blocks the action.

Can Instagram Lite help when Stories are not working on Android?

Yes, where it is available in Google Play. Instagram Lite is a smaller Meta app that uses less mobile data and supports viewing Stories.
