An iCloud restore stuck on Estimating Time Remaining leaves you wondering whether to wait or start over. That message alone does not mean the restore has failed. Start with power and Wi-Fi, then check setup prompts and software compatibility before erasing anything.
Give the restore uninterrupted Wi-Fi and power
A Wi-Fi disconnection pauses an iCloud restore until the device reconnects. Connect your iPhone or iPad to a charger. Connect it to a working Wi-Fi network and leave it connected while the initial restore finishes.
Apple gives a range of minutes to an hour for the initial progress bar. Apps, photos, music, and other content continue restoring in the background afterward, a process that takes hours or days. Apple sets no universal timeout for Estimating Time Remaining. An hour is not a deadline for erasing the device, and a changing estimate alone is not a reason to force-restart.
Try a different working Wi-Fi network
Test internet access on another device connected to the same network. If that device also cannot get online, move your iPhone or iPad within range of the router. Restart the router and modem by unplugging and reconnecting their power. Contact your internet provider if other devices still cannot connect.
Try the restore on another working Wi-Fi network. Once setup allows access, select that network through Settings > Wi-Fi. When Settings is accessible, check that Airplane Mode is off. Stick with Wi-Fi: Apple says an iCloud backup cannot be restored over a cellular internet connection.
Check Apple's service status
Open Apple System Status in a browser on another working device. Check iCloud Backup, iCloud Account & Sign In, Apple Account, and iOS Device Activation for reported incidents.
For apps or photos missing after setup, also check App Store and Photos. These services relate to downloads that continue after the initial restore. If Apple reports an incident, wait for it to be resolved before retrying. If service is available and another Wi-Fi network has not helped, check the Apple Account password prompts and required software update next.
Complete the account prompts during setup
Apps and content purchased with different Apple Accounts trigger password requests for those accounts during restoration. Enter the password for the Apple Account requested on the screen. Respond to each additional prompt for an account previously used to buy apps or content. If you do not have a requested password, choose Skip this Step or Cancel.
Repeat until the prompts stop. Access to purchases tied to a skipped account still requires authentication.
Install the software your backup requires
If the backup requires newer iOS or iPadOS software, accept the download and installation offered during restoration. The device updates and then restores the backup.
If compatibility blocks restoration and you must update outside setup, use the setup-and-retry sequence below. During its update step, connect the device to power and Wi-Fi. Open Settings > General > Software Update.
Tap Download and Install for the latest compatible version offered, then follow the prompts. Some update screens show Update Now instead. No separate firmware download is needed.
Restart the restore only after protecting your data
Erasing removes local data, so reserve this sequence for a failed restore or an update that requires finishing setup first.
- 1.Preserve any new local data and confirm that you have a usable backup. If you temporarily set up as new, avoid allowing a new iCloud backup to overwrite the backup you intend to restore.
- 2.If you need to finish setup to update, return to Transfer Your Apps & Data, using Back when shown, and select Don't Transfer Apps & Data. Finish setup, install the update through Settings > General > Software Update, and let the device restart. Skip this step if setup is complete and no update is needed.
- 3.Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings, then tap Continue. On iPad, use Transfer or Reset iPad.
- 4.On an eSIM device, choose the option to keep your eSIM rather than erase it, so your cellular plan stays active. Enter your device passcode and your Apple Account password to complete the erasure.
- 5.When the Hello screen returns, begin setup and select From iCloud Backup.
- 6.If the original backup keeps failing and another exists, choose Show All Backups, also labeled Show All. Check the date before selecting another backup: an older backup does not include changes made after it was created.
Find out why apps and photos are still missing
Unfinished background restoration leaves apps and photos missing even after the Home Screen becomes available. Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup to check for a message that restoration is still in progress. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power while restoration continues.
For a waiting app you need first, touch and hold its icon on the Home Screen. Choose Prioritize Download. This prioritizes that app's download; it does not address the initial estimating screen.
If background downloads are paused, open Settings > Wi-Fi. Tap the Info button beside the connected network. Turn Low Data Mode off. This mode suppresses automatic downloads and pauses iCloud updates.
For missing photos on iOS 26 or iPadOS 26, open Photos > Collections. Tap the profile button to inspect library status. Photo synchronization runs separately from the initial backup restore.
Tap Sync Now when offered for a temporary network or performance pause. For a low-battery pause, connect the device to a charger. For a temperature pause, let the device cool.
Leave Wi-Fi and power connected overnight. Keep iCloud Photos turned on while troubleshooting.
Switch transfer methods or contact Apple
After repeated restore failures, an existing computer backup or your old device gives you another way to transfer your data. Neither option works with only an iCloud backup.
For a computer backup, connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer by USB. Open Finder on a Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, or Apple Devices on Windows. Select your device. Complete any trust prompts.
Choose Restore Backup. Select the computer backup you want to use. Click Restore. Enter the backup's encryption password if requested.
Keep the device connected through the restart and synchronization. These apps restore locally stored backups; they do not download an iCloud backup as a computer backup.
If you still have your old device, use Quick Start for a direct transfer instead. The target device must be at initial setup; if it is already set up, follow the data-preservation and erasure steps above first.
Enable Wi-Fi on the old device. Enable Bluetooth on the old device. Bring the devices together. Follow the Quick Start prompts to transfer directly from the previous device.
Keep both devices nearby and powered until the transfer finishes.
For persistent failure, open Apple's iCloud restore support page. Select Get suggestions. Describe the exact screen, how long progress has remained unchanged, and which networks and backups you tried. If the device becomes unresponsive or cannot start normally, report that startup problem to Apple Support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple's 24-hour advice apply to a stuck restore?
No. Apple's 24-hour instruction for a slow iCloud backup concerns uploading a backup, not restoring one.
Will buying more iCloud storage fix a stuck restore?
More iCloud storage is not a general fix for downloading an existing backup. It addresses backup creation and photo-sync problems caused by full iCloud storage.
Can I use Stop Restoring iPhone as a stop-and-resume fix?
Apple does not publish a supported stop-and-resume repair for this screen. Do not use Stop Restoring iPhone expecting it to pause the restore for a later restart.
What if I am restoring a work or school device?
Ask your administrator to check network restrictions and managed settings before changing them or resetting network settings. Quick Start is unavailable for target devices enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business.
