Your Vizio TV says no signal, skips the HDMI port you need, or refuses to show a cable box, console, computer, soundbar, or receiver. Most HDMI problems come down to the selected input, a hidden input, a loose cable, a device setting, or a stuck TV handshake. Start with the fastest checks, then move into the settings that matter for 4K, HDR, gaming, ARC, and eARC.

1. Match the HDMI input to the port

Start here when the screen says No Signal: the TV has to be on the same HDMI input as the physical port your device is using.

  1. 1.Turn on the cable box, game console, player, computer, soundbar, or receiver.
  2. 2.Press INPUT on the VIZIO remote.
  3. 3.Select the matching input, such as HDMI-1 or HDMI-2.

If the remote is the problem, use the TV buttons.

Press the physical INPUT button on models that have one.

On models with POWER/INPUT, short-press it while the TV is on to move to the next input.

2. Restore hidden HDMI inputs

Press Menu or the gear icon on the remote.

Open System > Hide From Input List.

If your TV shows All Settings, open that first, then go to System > Hide From Input List.

Set the HDMI inputs you use to Visible.

Press INPUT and choose the HDMI port again.

A working HDMI port can disappear from the input list when it is hidden in the TV menu.

3. Test the cable, port, and device

Isolate the failed part by changing one thing at a time.

Power off the TV and the HDMI device.

Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends.

Plug both ends back in firmly.

Try another HDMI cable.

Move the same device to another HDMI input on the Vizio TV.

Test the same device on another TV, or test a different HDMI device on the Vizio TV.

This tells you whether the issue is the cable, the TV port, or the connected device. If one device fails everywhere, troubleshoot that device. If every device fails on one Vizio HDMI input and works on another, that HDMI port is the fault point.

4. Power cycle the TV

A hard power cycle clears the TV after display glitches and HDMI detection problems without erasing your settings.

Unplug the TV from the power source.

Press and hold the physical power button on the TV for about 3 to 5 seconds.

Plug the TV back in.

Turn the TV on.

Then press INPUT and select the HDMI input again.

5. Restart from the VIZIO menu

Use the menu restart when the TV responds to the remote but HDMI detection still feels stuck.

Press Menu or the gear icon.

Open System > Admin & Privacy > Restart TV or Soft Power Cycle.

On newer VIZIO guidance, open All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Restart TV.

Choose Yes.

On older models that show it, use System > Reboot TV.

6. Adjust HDMI Mode for 4K HDR and consoles

Press Menu on the VIZIO remote.

Go to All Settings > Picture > Input picture settings > HDMI Mode.

For HDR compatibility, choose Auto or Standard.

For Xbox Series X|S on supported models, choose HDMI Mode 2.1.

Use HDMI Mode when basic HDMI devices work but a PS5, Xbox Series X|S, 4K player, HDR source, or 120 Hz setup shows a blank screen.

For Xbox Series X|S or 4K 120 Hz gaming, plug the console into the HDMI port VIZIO lists for 4K 120 Hz on your TV model.

For a PS5, use the port VIZIO’s PS5 FAQ recommends for your model, which can differ from the 4K 120 Hz ports.

After moving the console, check HDMI Mode again.

7. Correct computer and ARC setups

Computer HDMI problems need two checks: the TV input and the computer output.

Press INPUT on the VIZIO remote.

Select the HDMI input connected to the computer.

On the computer, set the display output or resolution to one supported by the TV.

On a laptop, press the display-switch function key or shortcut used by that computer.

For a soundbar or receiver, use the labeled ARC connection path.

Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the TV’s HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC input.

Connect the other end to the soundbar or receiver’s return-audio port, labeled HDMI OUT (eARC), HDMI eARC, or TO TV, not its regular HDMI In port.

Select the correct HDMI ARC input on the audio device.

Enable CEC or System Audio Control when your ARC or eARC setup requires it.

8. Disable CEC to stop input conflicts

CEC is useful for device control and ARC/eARC, but it can also let a cable box, console, receiver, or soundbar change inputs or power behavior.

To test for that conflict, press Menu or the gear icon.

Go to All Settings > System > CEC.

Select Off.

Test the HDMI input again.

Turn CEC back on when you need ARC, eARC, or device control.

9. Update firmware before factory reset

Firmware updates come before a reset because they keep your settings intact.

Press Menu on the VIZIO remote.

Go to Admin & Privacy > Check for Updates.

Select Yes when prompted.

On older models, use System > Check for Updates.

You can also use VIZIO’s firmware search page, enter the TV serial number, and follow the instructions for that exact model.

Factory reset comes last because it erases settings and requires TV setup again.

Press Menu on the remote.

Go to Admin & Privacy > Reset to Factory Settings.

If your TV shows the reset option under System, use System > Admin & Privacy > Reset to Factory Settings.

Confirm the reset when prompted.

If HDMI still fails after input selection, visible inputs, cable swaps, power cycling, restart, HDMI Mode, CEC, firmware, and factory reset, use VIZIO Contact Support or the Self Help Portal for service or warranty options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change HDMI inputs without the VIZIO remote?

Yes. Use the TV’s physical INPUT button, the POWER/INPUT button on supported models, or pair the VIZIO Mobile App and use its remote controls.

Why did HDMI disappear from my Vizio input list?

The HDMI input is hidden. Open Menu or the gear icon, go to System > Hide From Input List, and set that HDMI input to Visible.

Which HDMI port should I use for PS5 on a Vizio TV?

Check VIZIO’s PS5 FAQ for your model. For the PS5, VIZIO recommends HDMI 1 or 4 on OLED TVs and HDMI 1 or 2 on 2020 P-Series models, which can differ from the ports VIZIO marks for 4K 120 Hz. Some VIZIO TVs reserve high-bandwidth gaming support for specific HDMI ports.

Does CEC need to be on for HDMI ARC or eARC?

Yes for setups that require TV-device control or System Audio Control. Turn CEC off only as a test, then turn it back on when ARC, eARC, or device control is needed.

When should I contact VIZIO support for HDMI problems?

Contact VIZIO support after the TV fails the input, cable, device, restart, HDMI Mode, CEC, firmware, and factory reset checks, or when a specific HDMI port is physically damaged.
