Grainy photos usually come from low light, high ISO, blur, or heavy compression. Start with the tool that directly reduces noise, then use light, remastering, or sharpening controls only where they fit. The steps below keep you on current app paths and away from older fixes that no longer belong in a normal workflow.

Start with a phone denoise tool

Photoshop Express has the most direct mobile fix for a grainy photo.

  1. 1.Open Photoshop Express and choose Quick actions.
  2. 2.Tap Denoise.
  3. 3.Select the grainy photo.
  4. 4.Move the noise intensity slider until the speckles settle down.
  5. 5.Tap Save.

Clean up grain in Apple Photos on Mac

This fixes visible noise in photos and videos inside the current Mac Photos app. Open Photos on your Mac. Double-click the photo or video. Click Edit.

Open Adjust. Expand Noise Reduction. Drag the Noise Reduction slider until the grain is less distracting. For a RAW image using RAW version 6 or later, use Luminance Noise, Colour Noise, and Detail inside Noise Reduction.

Improve grain from an iPhone shot

Use this when the photo was already taken on iPhone and looks noisy because it is dark or underexposed. The iPhone Photos app does not provide a dedicated denoise slider, so use light and color controls to reduce the appearance of grain.

Open Photos. Open the photo or video. Tap Edit. Tap Adjust.

Choose Exposure, Brilliance, Highlights, or another adjustment. Drag the slider until the image looks cleaner. Tap Done.

For a faster automatic pass, tap Enhance to improve light and color. Tap Done.

Try Samsung and Google Photos repairs

On selected Samsung Galaxy models and software versions, open Gallery, select the photo, tap the three-dot Menu, choose Remaster picture, review the before and after view, and tap Save.

On a Galaxy Book4 series PC, open Samsung Gallery, use Pictures, Add a folder, and Select Folder to bring in the image folder, then open the photo. Use the upper-right three-dot menu, choose Remaster picture, then choose Save or Save as copy.

In Google Photos on supported Android and Pixel surfaces, open the photo, choose Edit photo, open Actions, and tap Unblur. The alternate path is Edit photo, Tools, Actions, then Unblur.

Photo Unblur is for out-of-focus blurry photos, not a dedicated digital-noise remover. If remastering or unblurring does not reduce the speckles, use a dedicated noise tool such as Photoshop Express Denoise, Lightroom Denoise, or Topaz Photo Denoise.

Use Lightroom for RAW noise

Open a supported raw file, Linear DNG, Apple ProRAW, or supported raw format in Lightroom desktop Detail view. Choose Photo, then Enhance, or open Denoise from the Detail panel. Select Denoise.

Set the Noise Reduction slider. Check Preview. Choose Enhance.

For a batch, select the photos in the grid and press Command + Option + E on macOS or Ctrl + Alt + E on Windows.

In Lightroom mobile for iOS or Android, select the photo, open Edit, then Detail, and adjust Noise or Noise Reduction. For color speckles in Lightroom mobile, stay in Detail, use Color noise or Color Noise Reduction, then adjust Detail and Smoothness.

On Lightroom for iPad, use an iPad Pro or iPad Air with an M-series chip M1 or later and at least 8GB RAM, open a RAW file or Linear DNG, then go to Tools, Edit, Detail, and turn on Denoise. Move the Amount slider, or use the manual denoise controls in the same Detail area.

In Lightroom Classic, open the Develop module, zoom to at least 1:1, open the Detail panel, and adjust Luminance, Detail, Contrast, Color, and Detail in Noise Reduction. For Lightroom Classic AI denoise, select a supported raw image, choose Photo, then Enhance, enable Denoise, adjust the amount, check the preview, and choose Enhance.

In Adobe Camera Raw, zoom the preview to at least 100%, open Detail, and use Luminance, Luminance Detail, Luminance Contrast, Color, and Color Detail under Noise Reduction. Keep sharpening modest after denoise.

Use Windows fixes for small marks

Microsoft Photos Generative Erase works for localized blemishes or unwanted parts, not whole-image grain reduction. Open the image in Photos, choose Edit, then Erase, drag the Brush over a small speck, adjust Size, and use Erase when Auto apply is off.

When Auto apply is off, use Add mask, Remove mask, or Clear before Erase to control the retouch. That helps with a few marks, but it is not a denoise pass for the entire photo.

In Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and other Microsoft 365 apps, soften or sharpen an inserted picture from Picture Format, Corrections, and the Sharpen/Soften thumbnails. For manual control, open Picture Corrections Options and move Sharpness. Softening can hide mild grain, while sharpening can restore edge definition without removing digital noise.

Send stubborn grain to Topaz Photo

Use Topaz Photo when a desktop denoise pass is still needed after the simple tools, especially for non-RAW images with low-light or compression noise. Topaz Photo runs on macOS and Windows as a standalone app or in a plugin workflow.

Open the image in Topaz Photo. Let Autopilot analyze it. When Autopilot adds Denoise, review the model and sliders. Manage Autopilot with the toggle button at the top of that section, and add another enhancement with Choose something else, or with Add enhancement when Autopilot is off.

For a non-RAW image, open Controls. Choose Denoise. Pick Normal, Strong, Extreme, or Denoise Max when available. Adjust Strength and Original Detail.

For a RAW file, import the original out-of-camera RAW directly into Topaz Photo. Use RAW Denoise when a supported Bayer-sensor RAW is detected. In Controls, choose RAW Normal or RAW Strong.

Use Topaz Photo Main Menu, Preferences, then RAW Denoise for RAW denoise preferences. Use RAW Denoise for RAW noise in Topaz Photo; use regular Denoise for non-RAW noise.

Prevent grain before the next shot

A few camera settings reduce noisy low-light or high-ISO captures before you edit anything.

  1. 1.On supported iPhone 11 and later models, open Camera in low light, let Night mode turn on, choose a Night Mode exposure option from Camera Controls, tap the shutter, and hold iPhone still.
  2. 2.In iPhone Camera, tap the subject, drag Adjust Exposure up or down, and touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears.
  3. 3.To keep that exposure adjustment, open Settings, go to Camera, then Preserve Settings, and turn on Exposure Adjustment.
  4. 4.Clean the front and back iPhone lenses with a microfiber cloth, remove a lens converter, metallic case, or magnetic lens mount when low-light motion blur occurs, then restart and update iOS.
  5. 5.On Canon EOS models with the setting, use Shooting, High ISO speed NR, then Low, Standard, or High; on Nikon Z bodies with the setting, use the G button, photo shooting menu, High ISO NR, then High, Normal, Low, or Off.
  6. 6.On Sony cameras with the setting, use MENU, Shooting, Image Quality, High ISO NR, then Normal, Low, or Off; on Fujifilm cameras with the setting, use MENU/OK, Shooting menu or IMAGE QUALITY SETTING, NOISE REDUCTION, then the preferred level.

Finish with careful sharpening

After reducing noise, sharpen only when the picture needs edge definition. Sharpening can make grain more visible, so keep the final pass light.

In Apple Photos on a Mac, double-click the photo or video, choose Edit, open Adjust, and expand Sharpen. Drag Intensity, Edges, and Falloff gently. If sharpening brings the speckles back, reduce the sharpening and return to a denoise tool such as Apple Photos Noise Reduction, Lightroom Denoise, Photoshop Express Denoise, or Topaz Photo Denoise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix grainy photos on an iPhone without another app?

Yes, but iPhone Photos uses light and color adjustments rather than a true denoise slider. Try Exposure, Brilliance, Highlights, or Enhance.

Why is Lightroom AI Denoise missing for my photo?

Lightroom desktop AI Denoise works with supported raw formats, Linear DNG, and Apple ProRAW. It does not work with JPEG, TIFF, HEIC, JXL, AVIF, PSD, PSB, or video.

Does Google Photos Unblur remove grain?

No. Photo Unblur is for out-of-focus blurry photos, so use a dedicated denoise tool when the problem is speckled digital noise.

Should I use Topaz DeNoise AI or Topaz Photo?

Use Topaz Photo. Topaz DeNoise AI is a legacy app, while current Topaz Photo includes Denoise and RAW Denoise.
