Google Calendar stayed silent, and now you've missed a meeting. Getting alerts back starts with two checks: whether the event has a reminder and whether your device allows it through. Start with notification permissions, then follow the steps for your phone, browser, or missing reminder type.

Allow Google Calendar to notify you

This fixes alerts blocked by your phone’s notification permissions. On Android, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > All apps > Calendar. Enable Calendar notifications, including the categories you need.

On iPhone, open Settings > Notifications > Google Calendar, choosing Google’s app rather than Apple’s Calendar. Turn on Allow Notifications. Under Alerts, enable your preferred options: Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners.

Enable Sounds if shown. For alerts held until a notification summary, select Notification Delivery > Immediate Delivery. Alternatively, exclude Google Calendar under Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary.

Restore reminders for a whole calendar

Use this fix when one calendar has no reminders. Each calendar has separate notification defaults, and those defaults primarily govern new events.

In the Android app, select the affected calendar under Menu > Settings. Select an existing notification, Add a notification, or Add another notification. Set the reminder timing.

On iPhone or iPad, select the affected calendar in Google Calendar’s Menu > Settings. Tap Add another notification. Choose the reminder timing.

On the web, select the calendar under Settings > Settings > Settings for my calendars. Add a notification under Event notifications. Select its delivery method. Set its lead time.

Configure All-day event notifications separately for all-day reminders. Repeat for each calendar you use. These preferences are personal: an organizer or shared-calendar owner cannot set every guest’s notifications.

Check the event that stayed silent

One event still refusing to remind you? Check its own notification settings, even after restoring the calendar’s defaults.

On the web, select Edit event on the affected event. Under Notifications, select Add notification. Choose Notification or Email.

Set the lead time. Then click Save.

On Android, tap Edit on the affected event. Tap Add notification. Choose how and when to receive it.

Tap Done. Then tap Save.

On iPhone or iPad, select Edit > Notifications on the affected event. Select an existing notification or Add another notification. Set its timing. Tap Save.

If the alert arrives at the wrong time, open the event’s Edit > Time zone control on the web. Select the correct time zone. Click OK. Click Save.

If the reminder still fails, check Focus and Do Not Disturb using the quiet-mode fixes below.

Get desktop alerts working in your browser

Desktop alerts need Calendar’s notification setting, browser permission, and an open Calendar tab.

Open Google Calendar. Sign in to the intended account. Use the latest Chrome or the current or previous Firefox, Safari, or Edge release.

In Chrome, use a normal window: notifications are unavailable in Incognito. In Calendar, open Settings > Settings > General > Notification settings > Notifications. Select Desktop notifications, or Alerts for in-window alerts.

Allow the browser’s notification prompt. For blocked Chrome notifications, open View site information > Site settings > Notifications beside Calendar’s address. Allow delivery.

In Firefox, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Notifications > Settings…. Set calendar.google.com to Allow. Select Save Changes. Versions using the alternative section label show Permissions and data instead of Privacy & Security.

In Safari on Mac, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications. Set calendar.google.com to Allow. In Edge, use View site information > Permissions for this site > Notifications > Allow.

Leave the Calendar tab open. Google requires Calendar to remain open for desktop event notifications.

Stop quiet modes from hiding your alerts

An active quiet mode silences notifications or hides their banners. On Android, turn off Do Not Disturb in Quick Settings.

To keep a mode active, select it under Settings > Modes. Available mode controls depend on your Android version and manufacturer. Allow Calendar through Notification filters > Apps.

For silent Android alerts, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > All apps > Calendar. Select the relevant notification category. Change it to Alerting on devices offering that control.

Press a volume button. Open Menu. Raise Notification volume.

On iPhone, open Control Center > Focus. Tap the active Focus to turn it off. To keep that Focus active, select the mode under Settings > Focus.

Add Google Calendar through Apps > Allow Notifications From > Add Apps. On interfaces with the alternative label, select Choose Apps instead of Apps. If the mode uses Silence Notifications From, remove Calendar from that list.

On Windows 11, turn off Do not disturb under Settings > System > Notifications. Select your browser on that page. Enable its notifications, including Show notification banners and Play a sound.

On Mac, select your browser or web app under System Settings > Notifications > Application Notifications. For Safari website notifications, select the website sender. Enable Allow notifications.

For silent web alerts, enable Play notification sounds in Calendar’s Settings > Settings > General > Notification settings. In Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Sound > Allowed to play sound > Add. Enter calendar.google.com. Click Add.

Bring missing phone events back into sync

Missing or outdated events point to a sync problem. On Android, restore Wi-Fi or mobile data with Airplane mode off, then confirm a webpage loads. Reopen Calendar.

Check the intended calendar’s box in Google Calendar’s Menu. In phone Settings > Passwords, passkeys & accounts, select your Google account and enable Calendar under Account sync; manufacturer labels differ.

For secondary calendars, select the calendar under Menu > Settings, using Show more when needed, and enable Sync; the primary Events calendar has no switch. Select Menu > Refresh. If storage is full, free space under Settings > Storage, because Calendar stops syncing when device storage is exhausted.

For delayed background changes on Pixel, allow background operation under Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps > Calendar > Allow background usage. On Samsung Galaxy, hold Calendar under Settings > Device care > Battery > Background usage limits > Sleeping apps and select Remove; some models use Battery and device care > Battery. Repeat under Deep sleeping apps.

Fix task reminders in the app that sends them

A task appearing in Calendar does not mean Calendar sends its alert. On Android, only one installed app notifies for a task. On iPhone or iPad, Tasks delivers task notifications when both Tasks and Calendar are installed.

For an existing task in Google Tasks on Android, open its details. Correct its date and time. For a new task, select Add task > Add date/time.

Choose the date and time. Tap Done. Tap Save. Date-only tasks notify at 9 AM; deadline notifications occur at 9 AM local time.

In Android Tasks, open profile picture > Settings > Notifications. Enable All Tasks notifications. If Calendar or the Google app delivers the reminder instead, enable that app’s notifications under Settings > Notifications > App notifications.

On Android versions offering the control, open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Alarms & Reminders > Tasks. Enable Allow setting alarms and reminders. This access setting addresses Tasks reminders.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Notifications > Tasks. If Tasks is not installed, select Google Calendar instead. Enable Allow Notifications.

Calendar SMS alerts and Keep reminder notifications have been retired. Keep’s migrated reminders now live in Tasks, and its old location-based triggers no longer deliver reminders. Use Calendar or Tasks notifications for migrated reminders, or an email reminder for a calendar event.

If a task still stays silent, check the notifying app’s permissions in the quiet-mode settings above and its background restrictions, then update it using the recovery steps below.

Restore invitation and email notifications

This fixes missing alerts for unanswered invitations and disabled event emails. Open the invitation in Calendar or Gmail. Respond with Yes or Maybe, as appropriate.

To receive alerts for unanswered invitations, open Calendar web’s Settings > Settings > General > Notification settings. Uncheck Notify me only if I have responded Yes or Maybe.

For event-change or response emails, select the affected calendar under Settings > Settings > Settings for my calendars. Open Other notifications. Set the categories you need, including Changed events and Event responses, to Email.

For an email reminder before an event, select Edit event > Add notification > Email on the event in Calendar web. Set the lead time. Click Save.

If Calendar mail is missing from Gmail, open Show search options. Set the search scope to Mail & Spam & Trash. Enter the event information. Click Search.

Review Settings > See all settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses for matching filters using Delete it or Skip Inbox. Select Edit or Delete for a filter hiding the messages you want.

Try app recovery after the settings are correct

If the settings are correct but Calendar still malfunctions or shows stale data, try these recovery steps.

  1. 1.Update the affected app. On Android, open Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Updates available and update Calendar or Tasks. On iPhone or iPad, select Update beside the app under App Store > account button > App Updates.
  2. 2.Quit and reopen Calendar. On Android, use Settings > Apps > See all apps > Calendar > Force stop > OK, then immediately reopen it. On iPhone or iPad, swipe from the bottom to the middle and hold, or double-click the Home button, to open the app switcher. Swipe Calendar’s card upward, then reopen Calendar.
  3. 3.On Android, select Settings > Apps > See all apps > Calendar > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Reopen Calendar.
  4. 4.For persistent iPhone or iPad sync trouble, confirm important events exist in Calendar on the web before removing the account; unsynced or local data can be lost. In the app, select profile picture > Manage accounts on this device > Remove from this device > Remove for the affected account. Reopen Calendar and add the account again.
  5. 5.As a last resort on Android, confirm important events exist in Calendar on the web. Select Settings > Apps > See all apps > Calendar > Storage & cache > Clear storage > Delete. Unsynced events can be lost. Restart the device, then reopen Calendar.
  6. 6.Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for a Calendar incident. An outage requires service recovery. If no outage explains a reproducible failure, select Calendar web’s Support > Send feedback and include the event time, reminder lead time, platform, and what happened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Snooze appear on only one Google Calendar notification?

In Chrome, when an event has multiple alerts, Snooze appears only on the last notification. To adjust snoozed reminders, open Calendar’s Settings > Settings > General > Notification settings, select Desktop notifications under Notifications, and set the timing under Show snoozed notifications.

Why does my Apple Watch show a reminder that my iPhone does not?

Notifications normally appear on one device rather than both. An unlocked iPhone receives them. When the iPhone is locked or asleep, notifications normally go to an unlocked Apple Watch. Reading or dismissing the watch notification also dismisses it on iPhone.

Can enabling Background App Refresh fix every missing iPhone reminder?

No. Background App Refresh addresses stale background content; it is not required for every notification type. Low Power Mode also disables Background App Refresh and email fetch, so it matters when background updates or fetched email are delayed.

What if my work browser will not let me allow Calendar notifications?

In Chrome, open More and look for Managed by your organization. If your organization blocks changes to Calendar’s notification permission, contact its administrator to allow calendar.google.com notifications.
