Excel Fill Series fails when the fill handle is disabled, when Excel copies instead of continuing a pattern, or when formulas do not recalculate after filling.

Turn The Fill Handle Back On
In Excel for Windows, choose File > Options. Select Advanced and find Editing options. Check Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop, then select OK. Keep Alert before overwriting cells checked so Excel warns you before replacing existing cells.
Restore Drag Filling On Mac
Use this when the fill handle is missing or the cell corner does not drag in Excel for Mac. The control lives in Excel preferences.
Open the Excel menu and choose Preferences. Open Edit, then under Edit Options, check Allow fill handle and cell drag-and-drop. Close preferences and drag the fill handle again.
Make Excel Continue The Pattern
When Excel copies the first value, give it a clearer pattern and force series mode.

For an exponential growth trend in Windows desktop Excel, select at least two starting values. Right-drag the fill handle in the direction you want to fill. Release the right mouse button, then choose Growth Trend from the shortcut menu. Use Series when dragging is blocked or you want exact Step value and Stop value control.
Use The Web And Mobile Controls
Use these steps when Excel in a browser, phone, or tablet does not match the desktop fill handle controls. Excel for the web supports linear trend filling by dragging, but it does not create growth trends with the fill handle.
In Excel for the web, enter at least two starting values. Select both starting cells, then drag the fill handle in the direction you want to fill. For a growth or exponential trend in Excel for the web, use the GROWTH worksheet function.
On mobile, type a starting value. Type the next value below it or to the right to establish the pattern. Tap the first cell, then drag the selection handle around the second value. Choose Edit > Fill, then drag the fill arrow down or right.
Refresh Formula Fills
For Windows formula results, choose File > Options > Formulas. Set Workbook Calculation to Automatic. On Mac, open Excel > Preferences > Calculation, then set Calculation Options to Automatic.
Select the formula cell and the destination cells below it, then press Ctrl+D. To fill right, select the formula cell and the destination cells to its right, then press Ctrl+R. Before filling again, use relative references like A1 when references should change and absolute references like $A$1 when a reference should stay fixed.
Teach Excel Your Text Sequence
The most common cause with text series is that Excel cannot infer a custom order it has not been given. In Windows desktop Excel, choose File > Options > Advanced. Go to General, then select Edit Custom Lists.
To type the list yourself, choose NEW LIST. Enter each item in List entries, pressing Enter after each one. Select Add, then select OK twice.
To import a list, put the entries in a worksheet range and select that range. Return to Edit Custom Lists, then verify Import list from cells. Select Import, then select OK twice.
Format number-only custom lists as text before creating them. Custom lists are stored in the computer registry, so add the list on each computer where you need it.
Use Flash Fill For Text Patterns
This fixes text splitting, combining, and pattern recognition problems, not a true numeric or date series. In Windows Excel, choose File > Options > Advanced. Check Automatically Flash Fill, then select OK. Close Excel, then restart Excel.
To run it manually from the ribbon, choose Data > Flash Fill. Or choose Home > Flash Fill. Or press Ctrl+E.
Fix Excel After Settings Look Right
Use these checks after the Fill settings, series choices, and workbook options are already correct. On a work or school device, organization policy can block Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop, so ask your IT admin to allow that feature.
Launch Safe Mode in Windows from Start > All apps > Windows System > Run. Type Excel /safe, then select OK.
When the problem stops in Safe Mode, open File > Options > Add-ins. Set Manage to COM Add-ins, then choose Go. Clear the add-in check boxes and select OK. Restart Excel normally, then re-enable add-ins one at a time.
Update Windows Excel from File > Account > Product Information > Update Options > Update Now. Choose Enable Updates first when Excel shows it instead of Update Now.
