You installed an Excel add-in, but its button is missing or it never appears in the add-in menu. The right fix depends on whether you have an Office web add-in, a local Excel add-in, a Windows COM add-in, or a built-in tool. Start by checking where it belongs, then follow the matching route to activate it and restore its commands.
Find where your add-in belongs
Start here if you are looking for a separate Add-ins ribbon tab. An add-in does not always create one: it can put a command on another tab, open a task pane, or provide worksheet functions.
Check the publisher's instructions for supported platforms and the command, task pane, or function used to access the add-in. Office web add-ins support Windows, Mac, Excel on the web, and iPad when the publisher supports those clients. COM and VSTO add-ins require Windows.
For Solver or Analysis ToolPak, check the Data tab for Solver or Data Analysis, respectively. If the command is missing, use the local add-in activation steps below.
For Power Query in current Windows Excel, select Data > Get Data in Get & Transform Data. Power Query is built in; the deprecated standalone add-in is unnecessary.
Refresh and open installed web add-ins
In Windows Excel, open Home > Add-ins > More Add-ins. Microsoft 365 also provides File > Get Add-ins.
Select My Add-ins, then select Refresh. Double-click your add-in to launch it.
If it is missing, select Store in the add-in dialog. Find the add-in using Search, select its listing, and choose Add, Try, or Buy, according to the listing.
Sign in with the account used for Office when prompted. Select Continue, or complete the purchase for a paid add-in.
On iPad, open a workbook, then open Home > Add-ins > See all under My Add-ins. Select your add-in. After launching it, use the publisher's documented command or task pane to access its features.
Activate local Excel add-ins
An unchecked box leaves a local Excel add-in installed but inactive. On Windows, open File > Options > Add-Ins. Set Manage to Excel Add-ins, then select Go.
Check your add-in's box. For the built-in tools, the entries are Analysis ToolPak and Solver Add-in. Select OK, then select Yes if Excel offers to install it.
On Mac, open Tools > Excel Add-ins. If your compatible add-in is absent, select Browse, locate its file, and select OK to return to the add-in dialog.
Check the add-in's box. The built-in entries are Analysis ToolPak and Solver Add-In. Select OK. Restart Excel after enabling Analysis ToolPak on Mac.
Open Data to find Data Analysis or Solver. Windows places Solver in the Analysis group.
Enable Windows COM add-ins
This activates an installed COM add-in whose checkbox is cleared. Open File > Options > Add-Ins. Set Manage to COM Add-ins, then select Go.
Check the add-in you want to load, then select OK. If the entry is absent, install it using the publisher's installer when required.
Open File > Account > About Excel under Product Information to check your Office version and bitness. Compare those details with the publisher's requirements, then obtain the publisher's build matching your 32-bit or 64-bit Office installation.
For Power Pivot, check the Power Pivot entry in the COM add-in dialog. Your Windows Excel edition must include Power Pivot. If Excel disabled Power Pivot after a crash, use the Disabled Items steps below and enable Microsoft Office Power Pivot.
Select OK, then open Power Pivot > Manage.
Restore hidden commands and disabled add-ins
A collapsed ribbon hides commands even when the add-in is loaded. On Windows, press Ctrl+F1 to expand it. On Mac, select View > Ribbon.
For a hidden Windows tab, open File > Options > Customize Ribbon. Check the missing tab under Main Tabs. It must already exist in the list; this setting cannot create an add-in's missing commands. Select OK.
On Mac, open Excel > Preferences > Ribbon and Toolbar, then enable the tab under Customize the Ribbon. If Excel is in Safe Mode, close it; Safe Mode suppresses add-ins and customizations. Launch Excel normally.
For disappearing command bars from an .xla or .xlam add-in on Windows, close every workbook. Fully exit Excel, then restart Excel.
If Excel disabled the add-in after a loading failure or crash, open File > Options > Add-Ins on Windows. Set Manage to Disabled Items, then select Go. Select the disabled add-in, then select Enable.
Restart Excel. If it fails again, update or reinstall the add-in using the publisher's current package.
For a trusted downloaded .xla, .xlam, or .xll file blocked on Windows, close Excel. In File Explorer, right-click the trusted add-in file, select Properties, then select Unblock under General.
Select OK, then reopen Excel. Load the add-in through its matching activation dialog. If the commands still do not appear, try the cache reset below for an Office web add-in, or ask the local add-in's publisher to investigate the loading failure.
Clear a stuck web add-in cache
This resets cached Office web-add-in data used during loading. In Windows Office version 2108 or later, open File > Options > Trust Center. Select Trust Center Settings, then open Trusted Add-in Catalogs.
Select Next time Office starts, clear all previously-started web add-ins cache. Select OK, then restart Excel.
On Mac, open the add-in task pane's personality menu. Select Clear Web Cache. This option requires macOS 10.13.6 or later.
For a missing user-acquired Store add-in on Windows, open File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings. Select Enable optional connected experiences under Optional connected services. User-acquired Store add-ins depend on this setting; managed restrictions require your administrator's help.
Update Excel and repair Office if needed
Use these steps after the matching activation and loading fixes fail; Office repair affects the whole suite.
- 1.On Windows, select File > Account > Update Options under Product Information > Update Now. Select Enable Updates first if offered. Ask IT to handle centrally managed updates.
- 2.For a Microsoft-installed Mac edition, select Help > Check for Updates > Update. For an App Store edition, open App Store > Updates and select Update beside Excel.
- 3.If the problem persists on Windows 11, right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- 4.Open the ellipsis menu beside Microsoft 365 or Office, then select Modify.
- 5.Select Quick Repair > Repair. If that fails, select Online Repair > Repair.
- 6.For an unresolved failure, contact the publisher through Details + support on its Microsoft Marketplace listing. To report an Office problem, select Help > Feedback > Report a problem. Include the add-in name, Excel build, platform, and exact error.
Check workplace or school restrictions
Organization-provided add-ins require an assignment to your account, and managed policies control access. A local checkbox cannot override those restrictions.
In Excel builds using the Apps interface, open Home > Add-ins > + More Add-ins. Select Manage your apps at the bottom left of Apps, then open the deployed add-in's details.
If it is missing, ask IT to check your assignment through the Microsoft 365 admin center's Show all > Settings > Integrated apps > your add-in > Users > Assigned users. Ask IT to confirm that your organization's policies permit Store access and the add-in.
For the known issue affecting missing Optional or Available deployments, ask IT to change the deployment type to Fixed (Default), Microsoft's documented workaround. If the add-in remains missing after those checks, ask IT to contact Microsoft Support with diagnostic information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does showing the Developer tab enable Excel add-ins?
No. Showing Developer makes that ribbon tab visible; it does not activate an add-in.
Can I restore Power View with an old add-in installer?
No. Microsoft removed Power View from Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2021. Old COM add-in or Silverlight instructions cannot restore the removed feature.
Does installing Microsoft Edge also supply everything a web add-in needs?
The Edge browser and Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime are separate components. Windows Office web add-ins that use WebView2 require the runtime. If it is missing, install Microsoft's Evergreen WebView2 Runtime.
Can Safari settings fix add-in sign-in problems in desktop Excel for Mac?
Safari settings cannot disable tracking prevention inside desktop Office's embedded WKWebView. For add-ins whose authentication depends on third-party cookies, ask the publisher to implement Microsoft's documented Storage Access API or appropriate authentication handling.
