Discord screen share can break in several ways: the button disappears, the stream will not start, the picture turns black or frozen, or viewers get video with no sound. The quickest fix depends on where the failure starts: Discord’s service, your app version, a permission, a stream setting, or the game or app you are trying to show. Start with the fast checks, then move into the fixes that match your device.

1. Check Discord and your app version first

Start with the things that can make every local fix useless. Open Discord Status and check Client, Desktop, iOS, Android, Web, Voice, Gateway, and API. If Discord shows an active outage or degraded performance, wait for Discord to clear it before changing your settings.

Next, install or update Discord from discord.com/download, then reopen it. Use the official platform option for your device: macOS, Windows x64, Windows ARM64, Linux packages, App Store, or Google Play.

Discord also needs a supported system. Use Windows 10 or later, macOS 12 Monterey or later, Android 7 or later, iOS 16.0 or later, or a supported desktop browser. For Discord web, use Chrome 86 or later, Firefox 142 or later, Opera 72 or later, Edge 86 or later, or Safari 15.4 or later. Discord does not support the mobile browser.

2. Restart cleanly and stabilize the connection

Fully close Discord instead of only minimizing it. On desktop, quit the app from the tray or menu bar, open it again, and retry the stream. If that does not fix it, restart the computer or phone before you change deeper voice and video settings.

For streams that lag, freeze, disconnect, or drop quality, fix the connection next. Use a stable internet connection, switch to wired Ethernet when available, run a speed test, try another network, and reset the modem or router if the connection is unstable.

3. Lower quality and set Hardware Acceleration correctly

When the stream starts but looks bad, freezes, or falls behind, reduce the load first.

  1. 1.In a server voice channel, hover over the picture-in-picture stream, select the gear icon, open Stream Quality, then lower Frame Rate and Resolution.
  2. 2.In a DM stream, select the down arrow, open Stream Quality, then lower Frame Rate and Resolution.
  3. 3.On macOS, choose a lower Stream Quality, Resolution, and Frame Rate before selecting Next.

All users can stream up to 720p at 30fps, and Nitro tiers unlock higher limits. Discord browser streaming cannot adjust stream quality.

For lagging or problematic streams, open the cogwheel, go to User Settings, select Voice & Video, open the Video tab, scroll to Hardware Acceleration, and turn it off. If Discord shows Video Decoder or Encoder Errors 2008 or 2009, turn Hardware Acceleration on instead, then restart the stream.

4. Grant screen and sound permissions

On a Mac, open Apple menu, go to System Settings, select Privacy & Security, then open Screen & System Audio Recording. Turn on Discord. If Discord is missing, select the Add button below the list, choose Discord, then select Open. Quit and reopen Discord after the change.

For Discord web on macOS, grant that same permission to the browser you use for Discord, such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari. The Mac permission belongs to the browser, so approving the Discord website alone is not enough.

When Discord shows a system-level soundshare prompt, select Grant Access. Without that approval, the stream can keep running while viewers hear no application audio.

5. Fix Windows game capture

If Discord screen share fails only with a Windows game, focus on elevation, game detection, and display mode.

  1. 1.Close Discord, right-click the Discord icon or shortcut, and select Run as administrator. Do this when the game or app is also running with elevated permissions.
  2. 2.If the game does not appear for Go Live, open the game, then go to User Settings, Activity Settings, Registered Games, and Add it. Add the running game, return to the voice channel, and choose Go Live.
  3. 3.In the game’s video or display settings, change Full Screen to Borderless or Borderless Fullscreen, then retry Go Live. Windows Graphics Capture does not work for full screen exclusive games.
  4. 4.To use the Discord overlay, open the game, press Shift plus `, choose Stream, pick the stream settings, then select Go Live.

The Discord Game Overlay works on Windows only. Discord says it is not compatible with macOS or Linux.

6. Open server and channel access

When screen share works in DMs or other servers but not in one voice channel, check permissions. A server owner or admin should open Server Settings, go to Roles, select the role, scroll to Voice Channel Permissions, and enable Video.

For a single voice channel, right-click the channel, select Edit Channel, open Permissions, scroll to Voice Channel Permissions, and enable streaming under Video for the correct role or member.

7. Restore missing stream audio

Use a client that supports audio sharing: Windows desktop, macOS desktop, Chrome browser, or mobile. Do not expect application audio sharing on other browsers or Linux.

On macOS, update to macOS 13 or later when you need application or game audio in Discord streams. If stream audio still fails on macOS 13 or later, contact Discord at dis.gd/contact.

On Android, Discord mobile audio sharing requires Android 10 or later. On the Windows desktop app, for audio problems near streaming, open User Settings, go to Voice & Video, select the Voice tab, open Audio Subsystem, switch between Standard and Legacy, then retest. The macOS Discord app does not include an Audio Subsystem selector, so this step does not apply on Mac.

8. Use the mobile flow and avoid blocked apps

  1. 1.Join voice in a DM, group DM, or server voice channel.
  2. 2.In a voice-only call, swipe up from the bottom and press Screenshare.
  3. 3.In a video call, press the Screenshare icon in the bottom row. If it is missing, swipe up to open the voice and video control panel, then press Screenshare.
  4. 4.In the system dialog, press Start now.

If one mobile app will not share, test the home screen or another app. Discord says some streaming apps, including Netflix and Spotify, restrict screen share or audio share, and Discord does not support screensharing those apps.

9. Reinstall Discord after local fixes fail

A clean reinstall belongs at the end, after status, updates, permissions, quality settings, restarts, and device-specific fixes fail.

On Windows, close Discord from the system tray and end Discord processes in Task Manager. Press Windows plus R, enter %appdata%, delete the Discord folder, then press Windows plus R again, enter %localappdata%, and delete the Discord folder there too. Restart Windows, then reinstall Discord from the official download page.

On macOS, quit Discord with Command plus Q or from the menu bar. Open Activity Monitor and terminate remaining Discord processes. In Finder, press Shift plus Command plus G, or use Go and Go to Folder. Delete ~/Library/Application Support/Discord and /Library/Application Support/Discord if present, drag Discord from Applications to Trash, empty Trash, restart, and reinstall Discord.

Discord’s current Windows baseline is Windows 10 or later, so Windows 7 and 8 are no longer supported operating systems. That is separate from a compatibility-mode step Discord still documents for corrupt installs: its guide suggests running the Discord app as administrator and setting its compatibility to Windows 7 or 8, so keep that step if a clean reinstall alone does not fix the launch.

On a work or school device, screen capture can be blocked by organization policy. Ask the administrator to check whether screen capture is allowed for Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or macOS Screen & System Audio Recording.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Discord screen share button missing?

Check the server or channel Video permission first. In a server, an admin can enable it from Server Settings > Roles > Voice Channel Permissions > Video, or from Edit Channel > Permissions > Voice Channel Permissions > Video.

Why is Discord screen share black or frozen?

Check Discord Status, update Discord, restart the app, lower the stream resolution and frame rate, and disable Hardware Acceleration for lagging streams. For Windows games, switch Full Screen to Borderless.

Why can people see my Discord stream but not hear it?

Select Grant Access when Discord asks for soundshare permission and use a supported client: Windows desktop, macOS desktop, Chrome browser, or mobile. Application audio sharing is not supported on other browsers or Linux.

Does Discord mobile screen share work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Join a DM, group DM, or server voice channel, press Screenshare, then approve the system prompt. Android audio sharing requires Android 10 or later.

When should I contact Discord support?

Contact Discord after the relevant local fixes fail. Include your OS and version, affected client, screenshots of Voice & Video settings, device details, and the Debug log from Voice & Video settings.
