Your Xbox Discord mic is silent, but the voice channel still opens. The usual cause is the session surface, party chat, privacy permissions, account link, headset controls, or the device that started the Discord call.

Start with the Xbox guide, then move through the account, headset, app, and network checks that match the current Xbox and Discord support paths.

1. Join from the Xbox guide first

Use the current console method before chasing phone or desktop transfer problems.

Press the Xbox button on your controller.

Open Parties & chats.

Select Discord Voice.

Choose the Discord server.

Select the voice channel.

Discord Voice works directly from the Xbox guide on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One when your Xbox and Discord accounts are linked and the console software is current. The phone and desktop transfer flows still work, but they are not the only current way to use Discord Voice on Xbox.

2. Leave Party Chat before Discord

Press the Xbox button.

Open Parties & chats.

Select the active party.

Choose Leave.

Return to Parties & chats and open Discord Voice.

Pick the server and voice channel again.

Xbox Party Chat and Discord Voice do not run together in the same Xbox voice session, so leave the Xbox party before you rejoin Discord from the guide.

3. Check mute and channel access

Before changing account settings, make sure Discord is not blocking your voice inside the channel itself.

In the Discord voice channel or call, check the mic icon. A slash means your mic is muted.

Check the headset icon. A slash means you are deafened.

Open another server or voice channel you already use. A working mic there points back to the first channel.

Ask a server owner or admin to verify the permissions Connect and Speak for that voice channel.

4. Allow Xbox privacy permissions

Discord Voice needs Xbox privacy settings that allow cross-network play and communication outside Xbox.

In the Xbox mobile app privacy settings, set You can join cross-network play to Allow.

Then set You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text to Everybody.

On the console, open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize.

For a child or teen account, the family organizer must change the member's online safety settings.

On Xbox, the family settings path starts at Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings.

Set these permissions before relinking accounts or reinstalling apps.

In Discord desktop, open User Settings > Connections > Xbox connection > X > Disconnect.

On Discord mobile, use User Settings > Connections > Xbox connection > X > Disconnect.

On Xbox, press the Xbox button.

Go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Linked social accounts.

Select the Discord tile.

Choose Link and follow the prompts.

A fresh link restores the current Discord Voice permission set, especially on accounts linked before newer Xbox Discord Voice features were added. You can also link from Discord through User Settings > Connections > Xbox > Continue, then sign in with Microsoft and choose Authorize and Continue.

6. Update the console and accessories

Outdated Xbox system software, controller firmware, or headset firmware can break the voice setup before Discord gets a clean mic signal.

On Xbox, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates > Console update available.

To keep the console current, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates and turn on Keep my console up to date.

For controller firmware, open Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, select the controller, then select Firmware version when Update appears.

In Accessories, select the controller or headset and install any available update prompt.

7. Inspect the headset controls

For a wired headset, reconnect the plug firmly to the controller's 3.5 mm port.

Then check the inline mute switch.

For the Xbox Wireless Headset, check the volume, chat/game balance, and mute controls. The headset's mic light shows the mute state.

Open Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, select the controller or headset, and review the available configuration or update options.

This checks the physical audio path and catches a muted headset or controller port issue fast.

8. Fix the transfer device

If you start Discord Voice on a phone, tablet, browser, or desktop and transfer it to Xbox, the mic has to work on that device before the handoff.

On Discord desktop or browser: Open User Settings > Voice & Video > Voice, choose the correct Input Device, set Input Mode, raise Input Volume, and press Let's Check.

To reset a bad voice state, open User Settings > Voice & Video > Debugging and select Reset Voice and Video Settings.

On Discord mobile: Tap your avatar, tap the cogwheel, open Voice, and check Input Mode, input and output device settings, volume, Auto Sensitivity, Noise Suppression, Echo Cancellation, Noise Reduction, and Automatic Gain Control.

For microphone permission: On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone > Discord and turn it on.

On Android, open Settings > Apps > Discord > Permissions > Microphone > Allow.

In a browser, allow microphone access for discord.com in the browser's site settings.

In Privacy & security, open Microphone and review Microphone access.
In Privacy & security, open Microphone and review Microphone access.

For iOS Discord issues: Open User Settings > Voice > Developer Settings > Cache Actions > Clear Caches.

Then open User Settings > Notifications and toggle Integrate calls with the Phone app off and back on.

Update Discord from the App Store or Google Play on mobile.

On desktop, install a fresh copy from Discord's official download page, refresh with Ctrl+R on Windows or Linux, refresh with Cmd+R on macOS, or fully quit and reopen Discord.

For mobile transfer, install or update the Xbox mobile app through the official Xbox mobile app page. Xbox lists iOS 15.1 or higher and Android 8.0 or higher for the current mobile app.

9. Restart and test the network

Hold the Xbox button on the controller.

Choose Restart console.

Select Restart.

Rejoin through Parties & chats > Discord Voice.

Restart the console after the account, privacy, headset, and app checks are clean.

If voice connects but the mic or audio cuts out, open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings and run Test network connection.

Check Xbox Status for service outages when Discord Voice worked before and fails for multiple users at the same time.

Keep Alternate MAC address for network troubleshooting only. Xbox lists it under advanced network settings, but it is not a vendor-confirmed Discord mic fix.

Do not install a standalone Discord app on Xbox. Discord says there is no standalone Xbox app; the current options are direct Xbox guide joining, mobile transfer, and desktop QR handoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Discord say my Xbox needs an update?

Install the console update from Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates > Console update available, then rejoin Discord Voice from Parties & chats.

Can I transfer Discord Voice from a computer to Xbox?

Yes. Join the voice channel in Discord desktop, select the phone and game controller icon or right-click the voice channel, choose Transfer Voice to Xbox, scan the QR code, then finish the transfer in the Xbox mobile app that opens.

Do I need the Xbox mobile app for Discord Voice on Xbox?

You need it for both the mobile transfer flow and the desktop QR transfer — scanning the desktop QR code opens the Xbox mobile app to finish the handoff. Only direct Xbox guide joining from Parties & chats > Discord Voice works without the Xbox mobile app, once your accounts are linked and the console is updated.

Why can my friends hear me in Xbox Party Chat but not Discord on Xbox?

Discord Voice uses its own session and permission path. Leave Xbox Party Chat, join Discord Voice from Parties & chats, then check Discord mute, deafen, and the channel permissions Connect and Speak.

Can a child or teen Xbox account use Discord Voice?

Yes, if the account meets Discord's minimum age of 13, or older where local law sets a higher minimum. The family organizer must also allow cross-network play and voice or text communication outside Xbox in the member's Xbox privacy and online safety settings.

What should I send Discord Support if nothing fixes the mic?

Open Discord's Voice & Video Debugging area, gather the requested debug context with screenshots or logs, and submit a request through Discord Support.
