You press a button, aim harder, and your LG TV still ignores you. The cause is usually simple: dead batteries, something blocking the signal, a Magic Remote that lost its pairing, or a TV that isn't getting power. Work through the fixes below in order, starting with the quickest checks.

Start with fresh batteries

The quickest thing to rule out is worn-out or reversed batteries.

Open the battery compartment and replace both batteries with fresh ones of the type your remote specifies. Match the + and − markings inside the compartment exactly.

LG remotes don't all use the same battery size, so check the markings on yours before you buy. The 2026 Magic Remote (MR26GA) takes 1.5 V AAA alkaline batteries. To reach them, press the battery cover and slide it back.

Close the cover and try the remote again. If it responds, you're done.

Clear the path between remote and TV

Your LG TV picks up infrared commands through its remote receiver. Move anything away from the receiver, including objects sitting in front of the TV's lower edge, then aim the remote at the receiver and test again.

Room lighting can also interfere. LG points to fluorescent lights and lamps with electronic ballasts, so switch nearby ones off and try again.

A Magic Remote also communicates by radio, which has its own limits. For the MR26GA, LG says to stay within 10 metres with obstacles removed and to keep your wireless router more than 0.2 metres from the TV. Microwaves and other 2.4 GHz wireless equipment nearby can interfere too.

If the remote still does nothing after all that, check whether the TV itself is responding before you blame the remote.

Check whether the TV itself has power

Press the power button on the TV itself. If a power menu appears when you try to turn it off, hold the button for more than three seconds.

If the TV responds, it has power, so focus on the remote rather than the TV.

If it doesn't respond, inspect the power cord connection.

Plug another appliance into the same outlet.

If that appliance fails too, check your circuit breaker.

On an energy-saving outlet, move the TV's plug to the always-on socket.

If your LG LED/LCD model has a separate AC power switch, set it to ON. Your model's manual shows where it is.

Unplug the TV, wait one minute, plug it back in, and test again.

If that doesn't bring it back, run LG's power reset: unplug the TV, hold its physical Power button for about 10 seconds, then reconnect it and turn it on.

Tip: if pressing a volume button brings up the volume overlay, the TV is taking commands, so inspect your cable box or other HDMI source and select the correct input with Home Hub or External Input.

Re-pair a Magic Remote

A Magic Remote that lost its connection has to be registered with the TV again.

  1. 1.Turn on the TV, wait about 20 seconds, point the remote at it, and press the scroll wheel OK. Wait for the pairing confirmation.
  2. 2.If registration fails, turn the TV off and back on, then press Wheel (OK) again.
  3. 3.If it still won't pair, unpair it first. On the 2026 MR26GA and webOS 24 remotes, hold Home + Back for more than five seconds, then press Wheel (OK) with the TV on.
  4. 4.On the MR26GA, you can instead hold Home + Q. Settings for more than five seconds to disconnect and re-register in one step.
  5. 5.Some LG remotes use BACK + SETTINGS instead. Hold them for at least five seconds, wait for the LED to blink and the unpairing message to appear, then press the scroll wheel OK. Follow the combination in your own remote's manual.

Test a standard infrared remote

Use this check on a regular LG remote with buttons and no pointer. It shows whether the remote is sending an infrared signal at all.

Open the camera on an Android phone and point the remote's transmitter at the lens. Press the button that isn't working and watch the phone screen for a flash.

If nothing flashes, put in new batteries and test again. If most buttons flash but particular ones never do, the remote itself is faulty. Some phone cameras filter out infrared light, so a blank screen isn't always proof that the remote is dead.

This test covers infrared only. It can't check a Magic Remote's Bluetooth connection, pointer, or microphone.

You can also borrow another working standard LG infrared remote. LG says its standard remotes are usually compatible with each other, which makes a spare a handy test or temporary replacement. That doesn't extend to Magic Remotes. If your remote has a TV button for switching between devices, press it before you try to control the television.

Bring back a missing Magic Remote pointer

This fixes a Magic Remote pointer that won't appear on screen.

Shake the remote and look for the pointer.

If the pointer doesn't appear, check the remote's pairing before you think about replacing it.

Hold Mute to open Accessibility.

If Audio Guidance is set to ON and you don't need it, switch it OFF.

Shake the Magic Remote again and check for the pointer.

Use your phone as a backup remote

LG's ThinQ app for Android and iOS can control a compatible LG smart TV while you sort out the physical remote.

  1. 1.Install LG ThinQ from Google Play or the App Store and sign in.
  2. 2.Turn on the TV and connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. 3.Select Add a Device → Select Device, then choose your TV.
  4. 4.Enter the PIN shown on the TV, select Next, and complete registration.
  5. 5.Select the TV's device card, then Remote Control. You can also use Apps to launch a TV app or TV Input to choose an input.

Fix voice commands that go nowhere

Voice buttons need the right technique and a few settings in place. Hold AI or Mic (Voice Recognition) the whole time you speak, then let go. Keep the remote about 10 cm from your mouth and speak clearly.

Voice recognition needs an internet connection. On webOS 6.0 through 25, go to Settings → All Settings → General → Network → Wi-Fi Connection. On webOS 26, it's Settings → All Settings → System → Network → Wi-Fi Connection.

To sign in to your LG account, press Home and select the User icon. On webOS 6.0 or later, review the required agreements under Settings → All Settings → Support → Privacy & Terms → User Agreements.

Voice recognition also follows the TV's menu language. On webOS 6.0 through 25, set it under Settings → All Settings → General → System → Language → Menu Language, and pick a language available in your region.

If you're trying to get the built-in Google Assistant back, stop resetting the remote. LG ended that service worldwide on May 1, 2025. Use LG's own voice features instead.

If the remote's mic still won't cooperate, switch to hands-free control on supported models with a built-in microphone. Go to Settings → All Settings → General → AI Service → Voice Recognition Settings → Set Wake-Up Word for Hands-Free Voice Control, choose "Hi LG" or "Hi TV," then face the TV, say the phrase, and give a command. On webOS 26, LG moves these options to Settings → All Settings → General → AI Service → LG AI Settings → AI Voice Settings: set Use Hands-free Voice Control to On, then choose Set Wake-up word for Hands-free Voice Control. If your TV has a hardware microphone switch, make sure the microphone is switched on.

Turn to diagnostics, updates, and a reset

Use these steps once you've tried batteries, re-pairing, and power checks. You'll need some way to move around the menus, such as the ThinQ app.

A USB mouse or keyboard also works. Connect a wired one, or one with a compatible wireless USB receiver, to the TV's USB port on supported LG smart TVs released after 2012. Right-click and special mouse buttons don't work on every model, and some apps and screens won't accept that input.

Start with LG's built-in diagnostics. On webOS 5.0, 6.0, and 22, open Settings → All Settings → Support → Quick Help and choose Remote Control. On remotes with number keys, holding 9 for more than one second opens Quick Help directly.

Next, check for a software update. On webOS 5.0 and later, go to Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update → Check for Updates. On webOS 4.5 and earlier, it's Settings → All Settings → General → About This TV → Check for Updates. Install any update offered. Updates are routine maintenance, not a guaranteed remote repair.

A factory reset is the last resort, because it deletes installed apps and personal settings. On webOS 6.0 through 25, go to Settings → All Settings → General → System → Reset to Initial Settings and choose Reset All or, where offered, Reset all except network settings. On webOS 26, it's Settings → All Settings → System → Reset to Initial Settings. Enter the TV-lock password if asked, and don't interrupt the reset once it starts.

If the remote itself has failed, check your TV model against LG's compatibility list before buying a replacement. The MR26GA Magic Remote works with specified 2026 OLED, MRGB, QNED, NANO, and Lifestyle series, plus 2024 and 2025 TVs. If the TV still won't respond after all of this, use LG's Request a repair option. On a managed TV in a hospital or hotel, ask the operator to check the remote setup, because those sets use a separate commercial configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a standard LG remote work instead of my Magic Remote?

LG says its standard infrared remotes are usually compatible with each other, but that doesn't extend to Magic Remotes. For a replacement Magic Remote, check your TV model against LG's compatibility list before you buy.

Can I turn my LG TV on from the ThinQ app?

Yes, on TVs running webOS 3.5 or later. iPhones do this over Wi-Fi, and Android phones can use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. On webOS 6.0, find TV On With Mobile under Devices, External Devices in the TV's settings, then turn on Turn On via Wi-Fi and, where supported, Turn On via Bluetooth.

My cable box remote stopped controlling my LG TV. What should I do?

Try the original LG remote first. If it works, reset or re-pair the cable or satellite remote using your provider's instructions. The steps depend on the provider, and LG has no single button sequence that covers all of them.

Why does my Magic Remote control the TV but not my set-top box?

Set up Universal Control again. Press External Input, select the box's HDMI input, then go to Universal Control Settings, Manage Settings, Set-top Box, and Next. Confirm your location and provider, go through the test screen, and select Finish. Keep the box on and nothing in front of its receiver.

Can I control my LG TV from an iPhone without the ThinQ app?

On compatible LG AirPlay TVs, yes. Add the TV to Apple's Home app and assign it a room. Then, on the same Wi-Fi network, open Control Center, tap Apple TV Remote, select the TV, and enter the passcode shown if asked. Not every LG TV supports this.
