Your Fire TV won't connect to Wi-Fi, leaving you stuck at setup or unable to stream. Start with the connection check below, then work through the restart and reconnection steps. Keep a factory reset for last, since it removes your account information and downloaded content.
Find out where the connection fails
Open Settings > Network and press Play/Pause on your remote to run the network diagnostic. From the Unable to Connect screen, select Network Diagnostics instead.
Follow the recommendations on the screen. Compatible models also offer Advanced and Run Speed Test for more connection details.
Test the same Wi-Fi connection on another device.
If that device also cannot get online, check your modem and router for power and connectivity. When several devices are offline, troubleshoot the home network before resetting Fire TV.
Restart your Fire TV
Disconnect Fire TV from power for 10 seconds.
Reconnect it to power. During initial setup, use a longer wait: leave it unplugged for one minute before reconnecting and retrying setup.
Prefer to use the menu? On a streaming device with this option, select Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. On a Fire TV smart television, including the Omni Mini-LED (now named the Amazon Ember Mini-LED Series), use Settings > Device & Software > Restart.
If the interface is frozen, hold Select and Play/Pause together for approximately five seconds on a compatible remote.
If restarting fails, open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi and switch it off, then back on. If your model has no toggle, or toggling it doesn't restore the connection, check your password next.
Make sure you have the right password
This fixes a connection rejected because you're entering the wrong Wi-Fi password.
Get the current network password from its owner, an already-connected device, or the router's documentation. Use the router label only if the original credentials haven't changed.
Enter that password when Fire TV asks for it. You need the Wi-Fi password, not your Amazon account password.
If you recently changed the password, repeat Wi-Fi setup using the new one.
On compatible devices, the updated password is saved to Amazon automatically once Fire TV reconnects, unless you've opted out of saving Wi-Fi passwords to Amazon.
Forget the network and connect again
Remove the saved local connection, then reconnect with your current Wi-Fi password.
- 1.Open Settings > Network.
- 2.Highlight your Wi-Fi network.
- 3.Press Menu on the remote.
- 4.Press Select or OK to confirm forgetting the network.
- 5.Select your network again and reconnect with its password.
Restart the router and improve the signal
Unplug your modem and router for one minute.
Reconnect the modem first and wait approximately one minute for connectivity.
Plug the router back in and wait for it to reconnect.
Test the connection on Fire TV again.
Move Fire TV and the router closer together to improve signal strength.
For compatible multiband hardware, use the same network name, or SSID, for the router's bands. Amazon recommends this configuration so the device can select the best band. A 6 GHz connection requires both a Wi-Fi 6E-capable Fire TV and a Wi-Fi 6E-capable router.
If several devices still cannot get online, contact your internet service provider. If only Fire TV remains disconnected, try the setup checks below for a new device or Ethernet on a compatible model.
Get a new Fire TV through setup
Use these checks when you're stuck at the initial Wi-Fi connection screen.
- 1.For a Fire TV Stick, connect the supplied USB cable and power adapter to the Stick and a wall outlet. Amazon's general setup instructions advise against powering it from the TV's USB port. The Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Generation) is the exception: plug its included USB-C cable into your TV's USB-A port. If that cable can't reach or you see an insufficient-power message, use a USB-C cable and a 5V 1A USB power adapter connected to a wall outlet instead.
- 2.Press Back on the remote to refresh the network list.
- 3.Select your network and enter its current Wi-Fi password.
- 4.If the Stick's setup screen offers a QR code, scan it with your phone and follow the Wi-Fi setup prompts. Manual setup with the remote is also available.
Get online with Ethernet and install updates
Ethernet restores internet access on supported models by bypassing Wi-Fi, allowing you to check for updates without repairing the wireless connection.
Connect Fire TV to your router using Ethernet. If your model lacks an Ethernet port, use an adapter compatible with that Fire TV.
Once internet access works, open Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update. On devices with the other menu, use Settings > Device & Software > About > Check for System Update.
Install any available system update.
Save a factory reset for last
Use a factory reset only after the less disruptive fixes have failed. It removes account information and downloaded content, and you'll need to complete setup again.
Safely eject connected external storage before resetting.
On a Fire TV streaming device, open Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults and confirm. For a Fire TV smart television, use Settings > Device & Software > Reset to Factory Defaults.
Complete setup and connect to your Wi-Fi network again after the reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Fire TV phone app when Fire TV is disconnected?
The companion app requires your phone and Fire TV to be reachable on the same Wi-Fi network. It cannot provide remote control while Fire TV is unreachable on that network. Once both devices are connected, open the Fire TV app, sign in, and select the remote icon > Set Up New Fire TV. Follow the prompts to use its navigation and keyboard.
Why is Fire TV connected to Wi-Fi but unable to access the internet?
Router parental controls can pause internet access while leaving Wi-Fi connected. On an eero network you manage, open Home > Devices or the Devices tab. Select Fire TV, then tap Resume device. For a paused profile, open Home, select the profile, and tap Resume profile.
How do I connect an Omni Mini-LED Fire TV to a hidden network?
Open Settings > Network > Join Other Network. Enter the network name, security type, and password. To find a visible network, use Settings > Network > See All Networks. These menu options apply to Omni Mini-LED televisions (now named the Amazon Ember Mini-LED Series) with the corresponding software menus.
Will clearing an app's cache fix Fire TV Wi-Fi?
Clearing an app's cache addresses problems with that app after network connectivity is established. It does not reset Wi-Fi. If only one app fails, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications. Select the affected app, then choose Clear Cache. If the problem continues, use Clear Data, which removes the app's local state.
