You click Adobe Acrobat, but no window appears, or the app closes before you can use it. The next move depends on whether you have a stuck session, a damaged installation, or a subscription sign-in error. Start with a restart, then follow the Windows or Mac instructions that match what happens on your screen.

Clear a stuck Acrobat session first

A stuck Acrobat process can prevent a fresh session from opening. Save your other work, then restart your computer. Launch Acrobat again.

On Windows, if Acrobat still does not respond or reports a running-instance error, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Under Processes, locate Acrobat in both Apps and Background Processes. Right-click each Acrobat process and select End task, then launch Acrobat again.

On a Mac, press Command-Q to quit Acrobat. If it remains unresponsive, press Option-Command-Esc. Select Acrobat in the force-quit window, then select Force Quit. Reopen Acrobat.

For a blank window or failing network-dependent features, quit Acrobat before resetting its helper processes. On Windows, use Task Manager to end AcroCEF.exe and RdrCEF.exe. On Mac, open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. Stop AcroCEF and RdrCEF, then relaunch Acrobat after the helpers have stopped.

Bring Acrobat and your operating system up to date

Updating addresses failures tied to outdated Acrobat or operating-system software. If Acrobat stays open long enough on Windows, select Menu > Help > Check for updates. Select Download, then complete the update installation.

On Mac, select Help > Check for updates. Select Yes, then complete the update installation.

For an installation managed through Creative Cloud, open the Creative Cloud desktop app. Select Apps. Under Installed apps, select More actions > Check for updates. Select View Updates, then install the Acrobat update if offered.

If Acrobat cannot open and you do not use Creative Cloud, follow the reinstall instructions below. For Windows 11 updates, select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install available updates, then restart when requested.

Before a major macOS upgrade, check the new version against Adobe’s technical requirements for your Acrobat edition. On Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. Install compatible updates.

If you use Acrobat 2020, move to a supported edition. Adobe ended its support on November 30, 2025.

Repair Acrobat’s Windows installation

Windows lets you repair Acrobat without opening it, provided your installation includes the maintenance installer. Start here if the app still refuses to launch.

Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select Adobe Acrobat > Change. In the setup window, select Next > Repair. Restart your computer after the repair finishes, then launch Acrobat again.

If Acrobat opens but crashes during use, select Menu > Help > Repair installation instead. The classic interface uses Help > Repair Installation; Mac has no equivalent repair command. Confirm the repair, then restart after it finishes.

If the launch failure persists, right-click the Acrobat shortcut and select Properties > Compatibility. Clear Run this program in compatibility mode if enabled. Relaunch Acrobat. To test permissions next, right-click Acrobat and select Run as administrator.

Approve the permission prompt. If Acrobat opens only as administrator, address the Adobe folder permissions using Adobe’s permission-repair instructions. Running with elevated permissions is a diagnostic test, not a permanent fix; involve IT on a managed computer.

On a personal computer, sign into another operating-system user account. Launch Acrobat in that account. If it works there, repair or recreate your affected profile with operating-system support.

Resolve sign-in and subscription errors

For paid Acrobat that fails during subscription verification, sign into your Adobe account. Check that the account has an active Acrobat plan. Check the computer’s internet connection. Correct the device’s date if it is wrong, then correct its time-zone setting if it is wrong.

If the Windows sign-in window is blank, close it. Restore internet access before trying again. Reopen Acrobat, then retry signing in.

When Acrobat’s menus remain accessible, select Menu > Help > Sign out on Windows, or Help > Sign out on Mac. Select Sign in from the same menu. Sign in with the Adobe account that purchased the subscription, then restart Acrobat.

If the main app cannot stay open and your paid installation includes Acrobat Distiller, launch Distiller. Sign in with your Adobe credentials if prompted. A server or subscription error points to an activation problem. Reopen Acrobat.

For an activation-limit message, select Sign out beside an older device in the error window. Select Continue to activate the current computer. Keep these subscription checks for paid Acrobat; free Acrobat Reader does not require a paid Acrobat plan.

Reinstall Acrobat when repair does not help

Remove Acrobat with its normal uninstaller, then install the matching edition from Adobe.

  1. 1.Close Acrobat.
  2. 2.On Windows, press Windows+R, enter Control Panel, and open Programs > Programs and Features. Select Adobe Acrobat > Uninstall > Yes and complete removal.
  3. 3.On Mac, open Finder > Applications > Adobe Acrobat > Acrobat Uninstaller. Select Adobe Acrobat > Open > Uninstall. Supply administrator credentials when requested.
  4. 4.If the standard uninstall fails, back up your settings before using Adobe’s AcroCleaner. Follow its product-specific instructions: the tool excludes Creative Cloud products and Acrobat delivered with Creative Suite. Do not delete shared Adobe folders as a routine reinstall step.
  5. 5.Restart the computer after removal.
  6. 6.For a current subscription, select Download Acrobat on Adobe’s Acrobat download page and sign in with the account holding the subscription. For free Reader, use Adobe’s Reader download page. Run the installer matching your computer and edition, then launch the app. If Windows reports a core-DLL loading error and Acrobat was installed on a mapped or network drive, reinstall it on the local system drive.

Isolate conflicts and collect diagnostics

If an antivirus product or third-party PDF plug-in is implicated in the failure, update it through its vendor. For an identified incompatible Windows Acrobat plug-in, move that plug-in out of the plug_ins folder. The default folders are C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\plug_ins for 64-bit installations and C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\plug_ins for 32-bit installations; the location depends on where Acrobat was installed.

Launch Acrobat again. Contact the plug-in vendor if updating does not resolve the conflict. On a work or school computer, ask IT to investigate restricted permissions, blocked activation, or security settings. Include whether Acrobat opens as administrator or under another user account.

If Acrobat opens independently but a PDF does not, check the document and its default app association using the instructions in the FAQ. When only one PDF fails, obtain another copy or recreate it from its original source. Repairing Acrobat cannot directly repair a corrupted PDF.

If these checks do not resolve the failure, try the standalone tool on Adobe’s Acrobat Diagnostics page: select Download for Windows or Download for macOS. Run the downloaded tool. Review the resulting logs or share them with Adobe Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does double-clicking a PDF fail when Acrobat opens normally?

Check the PDF’s default app association. On Windows, right-click a PDF and select Properties > Change. Choose Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, then select Set default and OK. Contact IT if Change is unavailable. On Mac, select a PDF in Finder and open File > Get Info. Choose Acrobat or Reader under Open With, then select Change All.

Can I open a PDF while the desktop app is broken?

Yes. On the Acrobat web homepage, select Upload files. Choose your PDF, then select Open. This uploads the document to Adobe cloud storage and provides temporary access without repairing the desktop installation.

Should I turn off Protected Mode to make Acrobat open?

Use this only as a temporary Windows diagnostic when Acrobat’s preferences are accessible. Open Menu > Preferences > Security (Enhanced); the classic interface starts at Edit > Preferences. Clear Enable Protected Mode at startup, then restart Acrobat. Test only trusted files and restore Protected Mode afterward. Update conflicting antivirus software or plug-ins through their vendors.

What if a PDF will not open in my browser?

If Acrobat itself works, download the PDF and open it locally. Open the PDF link’s context menu and select Save Link As in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, or Download Linked File in Safari. Save the file, locate the download, and open it with Acrobat. If only that file fails, obtain a fresh copy.
