Your Steam Controller can show up in Steam and still go dead once a game starts. The fix starts with Steam Input, the game layout, and the connection mode, then moves through Bluetooth, macOS permissions, Steam Link, and non-Steam game limits.
Run these fixes in order, from the quick Steam checks to the platform-specific ones.
Update Steam and the controller first
This fixes Steam Input problems caused by outdated Steam client, controller, puck, or SteamOS firmware.
Open Steam and install any available Steam client updates.
Go to Steam > Settings > Controller and install available Steam Controller or Steam Controller Puck updates.
On SteamOS hardware, open Steam > Settings > System > Hardware Updates and install the available update.
Restart the PC or SteamOS device.
Turn the controller off and on again.
Restart any receiver or puck involved.
Check the game layout Steam is using
The most common cause is a layout that sends inputs the game does not understand.
Open the game in your Steam library and click the controller icon to open the Steam Input Configurator.
In the Button Layout section, open the layout menu and choose a layout from Recommended, Your layouts, Templates, or Community layouts.
Press X or click Apply Layout.
Launch the game again from Steam.
For a game with no controller support, choose a community configuration that maps the controller to keyboard and mouse or gamepad inputs.
Turn Steam Input on for that game
Open the game in Library and use the controller icon to reach the game’s controller settings. You can also right-click the game, open Properties..., then choose Controller.
Set the game’s Steam Input override or enablement so Steam Input applies to that title. Use the per-game setting when only one game has the problem.
For global controller handling, open Steam > Settings > Controller and adjust the controller-type Steam Input setting there. Keep global changes for cases where several games have the same issue.
Remap broken buttons in Steam Input
Use this when the controller works in the game but one button, trigger, D-pad direction, stick, or trackpad action is wrong.
Open the game’s controller configurator and click Edit Layout.
Choose the input group in the sidebar, such as Buttons or DPad.
Select the specific button or input box that is failing.
Choose the replacement action, keyboard key, mouse input, or gamepad binding the game expects.
Adjust the behavior dropdown, behavior settings, button mapping, or button settings as needed.
Fix trackpad and mixed input problems
This fixes games that flicker between keyboard prompts and controller prompts, drop input, or behave strangely when mouse and gamepad input are mixed.
Open Edit Layout for the affected game.
Select the trackpad or stick behavior settings that are causing trouble.
Change a trackpad set to As Mouse to As Joystick.
Tune sensitivity in the behavior settings menu until camera movement or aiming feels correct.
Reconnect the Steam Controller or use USB-C
For Steam Controller Puck wireless mode, turn the controller off, then hold A + R1 + Steam for the right slot or A + L1 + Steam for the left slot until you hear the chime and see the white LED. Confirm the connection under Settings > Controller > Details.
To manually pair with the Puck, plug the Puck into the PC with USB-C. Make sure Steam is open and no games are running, place the controller on the Puck, then complete the Steam pairing prompt.
For Bluetooth mode, turn the controller off, then hold B + R1 + Steam until the chime and blue LED. Keep holding until the second chime and rapid double blue pulses, then select Steam Ctrl (BT) FXA... in the device’s Bluetooth settings.
If wireless keeps failing, use wired USB-C mode. With the controller powered off, plug it directly into the PC with USB-C; if it is already on in another mode, hold the Steam button while plugging it in, and look for the green LED.
If this method fails, reinstall Steam next, because the controller connection is working while Steam’s local input setup still needs repair.
Reinstall Steam when the controller UI is broken
Use Valve’s official Steam download page to reinstall Steam when normal updates and restarts do not fix the Steam Input or controller configuration screens. Select Install Steam or Get the app for PC.
If Steam is already installed, run the Steam installer again to reinstall it. After it finishes, reopen Steam, go back to Steam > Settings > Controller, and check the affected game’s controller icon again.
Older guides mention GENERAL CONTROLLER SETTINGS and controller support checkboxes. Current Steam uses Steam > Settings > Controller, the game-page controller icon, and per-game Steam Input controls instead.
Handle Bluetooth, macOS permissions, and Steam Link
Check the system or streaming layer when the controller connects outside Steam but fails in a game.
- 1.On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices, turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on, then remove and add the controller again.
- 2.On Windows 11, run Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Bluetooth > Run.
- 3.On macOS, allow Steam in Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring, then relaunch Steam when prompted.
- 4.On macOS, allow Steam in Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility when desktop cursor or launcher navigation is affected.
- 5.For Steam Link, open Settings > Streaming > Advanced Options and make sure input streaming is enabled.
- 6.For Remote Play, open Steam Big Picture on the client computer and confirm the controller is recognized in controller settings before troubleshooting the game itself.
When a non-Steam game will not cooperate
This applies when the game was installed outside Steam, starts through another launcher, or uses anti-cheat that blocks emulated input.
Add the game to Steam from the PC client by opening Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library... and choosing the game or app executable.
You can also use Steam > Settings > Library > Add a Non-Steam Game.
Launch the added shortcut from Steam.
Configure the controller like a normal Steam game.
Steam Controller support is limited when a game blocks the Steam Overlay, blocks emulated input through anti-cheat, requires an independent launcher to run as administrator, or cannot be added to the Steam Library.
On a school or work computer, Bluetooth pairing or privacy permissions are blocked when device management disables them. Ask the admin to allow Bluetooth and the Steam permissions needed for Input Monitoring or Accessibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Steam Controller work in Steam but not in one game?
The game is using the wrong layout, Steam Input is off for that title, or the game does not accept the input style being sent. Open the game’s controller icon in Steam and apply a recommended or community layout first.
Should I use Bluetooth, the Steam Controller Puck, or USB-C?
Use USB-C to confirm the controller works. If USB-C works and wireless fails, repair the Puck or Bluetooth connection and check the Puck signal strength in Settings > Controller > Details.
Can Steam fix every non-Steam game?
No. Steam Input is limited when a non-Steam game blocks the Steam Overlay, blocks emulated input with anti-cheat, requires a separate administrator launcher, or cannot be added to Steam.
What replaced old Steam controller checkbox guides?
Use the current Steam paths: Steam > Settings > Controller, the game-page controller icon, and each game’s Properties > Controller area for per-game Steam Input settings.
