To fix a Sony TV that shows no available networks, enable Wi-Fi in its network settings, restart the TV and router, then install the latest software for your exact model if the list stays empty. Start with the wireless setting and restart before changing router settings or considering a factory reset. These steps cover Sony Google TV and Android TV, with model-specific alternatives where needed.

The short version

  • Enable wireless: Turn on the wireless connection, or toggle it off and back on if it is already enabled.
  • Restart both ends: Restart the TV, then disconnect router and modem power for approximately 60 seconds.
  • Check a missing home network: Manually add its exact name and confirm that the router uses a band your TV supports.
  • Update before resetting: Install the latest software for your exact TV model, using USB when necessary.
  • Know when to get help: Persistent failure to detect any nearby networks can require Sony hardware diagnosis.

Turn on the TV’s wireless connection

On Sony Google TV and Android TV, press Quick Settings or HOME, then open Settings. Select Network & Internet > Wi-Fi and enable Wi-Fi. If it is already enabled, turn it off and back on, then inspect the network list.

Some models place the switch under Network & Internet > Easy setup > Wi-Fi, or Network > Network setup > Easy > Wi-Fi. Another menu layout uses Settings > Network > Advanced settings > Built-in Wi-Fi. On that layout, select On.

For BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II, press Quick Settings and open Settings > Network and Internet > Wi-Fi. Enable Wi-Fi, then select your network and enter its password once it appears.

Restart the TV completely

With your Sony Android TV or Google TV turned on, hold POWER on the remote until Power off appears and the TV restarts. If your model displays a power menu instead, select Restart. A brief press of POWER normally puts the TV into standby, so it does not perform this restart.

You can also press Quick Settings and open Settings > System > Restart, then select Restart. Other layouts use HOME > Settings > About > Restart, or HOME > Settings > Device Preferences > About > Restart. Select Restart to confirm.

If the network list stays empty, disconnect the TV’s power cord from the electrical outlet and wait two minutes. Reconnect it, turn on the TV, and inspect the list again. This power cycle is also useful when the menus or wireless toggle stop responding.

On supported one-button BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II variants, press the TV’s physical Power button to display its operation menu. Select Restart, then hold Power to restart.

The BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II manual also gives model-dependent power-reset alternatives, so follow the option that applies to your model. On supported models, hold the TV’s Power button for 40 seconds or longer until it turns off and restarts. For the manual’s unplugged procedure, disconnect power, press and release the TV’s Power button once, wait two minutes, then reconnect power.

Restart the router and improve its placement

Disconnect your router and modem from power for approximately 60 seconds. If they are separate devices, restart both, reconnect power, and wait for startup and network initialization to finish before retrying the TV’s scan. Use a power restart here, not the router’s factory-reset button.

For weak or undetectable signals on Sony Google TV and Android TV, move the router closer while keeping at least 1 meter between it and the TV. To improve a weak Wi-Fi signal, reduce intervening walls and floors and move nearby wireless devices, microwave ovens, and other interference sources away. Check the network list again after changing the placement.

On affected Sony models, the network list can disappear after the TV loses connectivity while turned off. If your router has a power-saving feature that periodically stops its Wi-Fi signal, disable that feature through the router’s documented administration interface. Keep the router powered on while the TV is in standby, and install the TV software update described below.

Connect to an unlisted home network

When your home network is unlisted or hidden, add it manually on TVs with the Network & Internet interface. Press HOME, open Settings > Network & Internet, and under Other options, select Add new network. Enter the exact network name, also called its SSID, and supply its security details when prompted.

Some model menus place Add new network directly in the network menu. Use that entry instead, then enter the same exact network name and security details.

On compatible BRAVIA models affected by a missing 6 GHz network during initial setup, return to the previous setup screen and reopen the Wi-Fi list. A crowded wireless environment can cause that setup list to omit networks. If the network is still missing, complete initial setup, then open Settings > Network & Internet to select it and connect. This procedure applies only to compatible models and does not mean every BRAVIA supports 6 GHz.

Check the router’s band and channel

Check your exact TV model’s wireless specifications before changing the router’s frequency band. Some Sony models and regional variants require 2.4 GHz, so do not assume your TV supports 5 GHz or 6 GHz. If the router’s current band is incompatible, enable a supported band through its administration interface, then connect through Settings > Network & Internet on TVs with that menu.

For a 2.4 GHz network using channel 12 or 13, try channel 1, 6, or 11 if the TV alone cannot connect. Support for channels 12 and 13 depends on the TV’s model, firmware, and region. Sony otherwise recommends Auto to reduce interference, and recommends updating TVs made before 2018.

In a congested environment, reducing channel width is another optional adjustment. From a computer, sign in to the router or gateway and set the 2.4 GHz channel width to 20 MHz, or the 5 GHz width to 20/40 MHz, following the router manufacturer’s menu instructions. Retry the connection afterward; this interference adjustment is not a guaranteed fix for an empty network list.

Install the latest TV software

Sony identifies a software update as the fix for affected models whose network list disappears after the TV loses connectivity while off. Install the latest software offered for your exact model. If you cannot update initially, power-cycle the TV and retry, or use the USB update route below.

On Sony Google TV with these menus, press Quick Settings and open Settings > System > About > System software update > Software update. Models with the alternative support menu use HELP > Top support solutions > System software update. An online update requires a working internet connection, which you can provide through Ethernet.

On Sony Android TV, press HELP, or press HOME and select Help; on Android 8 or 9, open Apps > Help. Select Status & Diagnostics > System software update. Choose Check for a system software update or Software update, matching the label on your screen. On W8, X7, X74H/X75H, W8K, and X74K/X75K series TVs, open Settings > Device Preferences > About > System Update to check for an update manually.

For an offline update, open Sony’s TV software download page, enter the exact model in Model name or keywords, and select Search. If a firmware package is offered for your TV, open its download instructions and use a computer to download it and prepare the USB drive exactly as directed. Follow that model’s installation instructions, since the package, formatting, and extraction requirements vary.

Consider a factory reset after simpler fixes

A factory data reset erases accounts, apps, and saved settings. After simpler remedies fail, open Settings and use System > About > Reset > Factory data reset on Sony Google TV or Android TV models with that layout. Other layouts use Device Preferences > Reset > Factory data reset, or Storage & reset > Factory data reset.

Select Erase everything, then Yes, and enter the TV PIN if requested. Complete initial setup afterward and check the network list. The KD-750H running firmware 60104 or higher has a different reset location, so confirm the route in its model instructions before proceeding.

If HOME does not work, the alternative routes below reach the same factory reset and erase accounts, apps, and saved settings. Try pressing ACTION MENU or Quick Settings and selecting Settings, then follow the matching reset path.

You can also press HELP, or press Input and select Help. Open Manual (Help Guide) > Settings > Using the Quick Settings > Settings > System > About > Reset > Factory data reset. Select Erase everything, then Yes.

Older Help interfaces use Help Guide (Manual) > Settings > Configuring the TV > Watching TV or TV > Settings. From there, follow the matching factory reset path above.

Use a forced reset only when settings cannot open

A forced factory reset erases all customized settings, including your Google account, downloaded apps, channels, the parental lock setting, and wireless network settings. Use it only when normal settings cannot be accessed on a compatible Sony Android TV or Google TV running Android 6.0 or later. Follow your model’s physical-button configuration, since the procedure differs by button count.

For a compatible one-button model, unplug the TV, then hold its physical Power button while reconnecting power. Release the button when the white LED appears, approximately 10 to 30 seconds later. Wait for the restarts and the Welcome screen.

For a compatible three-button model, unplug the TV, then hold its physical Power and Volume Down buttons while reconnecting power. Release them when the green LED appears. Wait for the restarts and the Welcome screen.

Compatible models with more than three buttons use the same Power and Volume Down procedure, followed by another factory data reset that erases accounts, apps, and saved settings. After the restarts, if the Welcome setup screen appears, quickly go through setup, skipping the network and channel setup. Then press Home and open Settings > Storage & reset > Factory data reset. Select Erase everything, then Yes, and complete setup at the Welcome screen. If you cannot identify the procedure for your model, contact Sony support for model-specific help.

Use Ethernet or get the wireless hardware checked

For internet access on a network-capable Sony TV with Ethernet, connect a router LAN port to the TV’s LAN port using a Cat 5e or better Ethernet cable. You can use that connection for internet access and software updates. It restores wired access without repairing the wireless scan.

If the TV still detects no nearby networks after enabling wireless and restarting, contact Sony support or use Sony’s repair service for hardware diagnosis. Sony says this can indicate a hardware issue, but an empty network list alone does not establish that the hardware has failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the TV not receiving software updates?

Some Sony TVs require acceptance of the Sony Privacy Policy before they receive software updates. Press HELP, or press HOME and open Help, then open Privacy setting, read the policy, and select Agree if you accept it. This enables update delivery; it does not directly repair the wireless scan.

Can I use WPS instead of selecting a network?

Sony Android TV 8.0 and later removed WPS, so older instructions for connecting with the router’s WPS button do not apply to those versions. Use the Wi-Fi network selection and password method instead.

How can I check the TV’s network connection status?

On Sony TVs with diagnostic menus, press Quick Settings, HOME, or MENU and open Settings, then Network or Network & Internet. Select Network Status, or Advanced settings > View Network Status, then select Check connection when offered. Some entry-level Android TV series lack the full diagnosis function, so consult your model’s manual for its diagnostic options.

What can I use if an older TV’s USB wireless connection cannot be restored?

Sony lists a wireless bridge or powerline adapter as alternatives for network-capable TVs with Ethernet when the older USB wireless connection cannot be restored. Configure the equipment using its manufacturer’s instructions, then connect its Ethernet output to the TV’s LAN port.
