Check the thermostat’s connection status

On Sensi Smart, inspect the upper-left status icon. For Lite, tap the three-dot menu button and inspect the icon beside the temperature. On Touch, open Menu > Wi-Fi. On Touch 2, tap the menu icon, open Wi-Fi, and inspect Signal Strength and Sensi Cloud.

An X indicates a network connection problem, while an X together with the Wi-Fi icon indicates an internet or cloud problem. On Lite, a blank status area, or a flashing X with the Wi-Fi icon while the backlight is off, instead points to the battery, HVAC power, and C-wire checks covered below. A full Wi-Fi icon or Connected points toward the app or phone, so try refreshing the app before repeating network setup.

For an internet or cloud problem, connect your phone to home Wi-Fi, disable cellular data, and try loading a website. If it fails, contact your internet provider about the connection. Check the Sensi app for a major-outage banner or the service banner on Sensi’s support homepage. If an outage is reported, retry after service recovers.

Refresh the app and restart the connection

When the thermostat shows a full Wi-Fi icon or Connected, force-close Sensi and reopen it. After your router recovers, allow a few minutes for the app’s status to refresh. If necessary, restart your phone or tablet and reopen Sensi after internet access returns.

For a network connection failure, disconnect router power for 5 to 10 minutes. Restore power and allow 1 to 5 minutes for internet service to return. Test a website over Wi-Fi, then give the thermostat additional time to reconnect.

If the thermostat still will not connect, pull its cover straight off the base. Remove batteries if fitted and wait until the screen is blank. After several minutes, reinstall the batteries and cover, then retry the connection.

Use the right network and password

Select a 2.4 GHz network for Smart, Lite, Touch, or Touch 2; 2.4 GHz networks also have greater range. When a dual-band or mesh network causes setup trouble, give its bands distinct names in the router’s settings, or temporarily disable 5 GHz. Re-enable 5 GHz after connection.

A changed router or Wi-Fi password calls for reconnecting the thermostat through the app. Sign into Sensi, tap +, select your thermostat model, then tap Connect to Wi-Fi. Follow the matching model steps below and enter your home network’s current password.

Restore the phone permissions needed for setup

Search for Sensi in the Apple App Store or Google Play and install any available update. If the app is unavailable for your device, use a supported phone. For persistent Smart or Touch 2 setup failures, install Sensi on another compatible phone or tablet, sign into the same account, and repeat setup.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, search for Sensi, and open its settings. Enable Local Network, plus Bluetooth for Bluetooth setup and Camera for QR scanning. Enable Home Data when pairing supported hardware with HomeKit; Sensi also calls for location access during registration. Manual PIN entry avoids needing camera access.

On Android, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Sensi > Permissions. Enable Nearby devices and Location as needed, plus Camera for scanning. Select Allow, or select Allow only while using the app for location or camera permissions offering that choice. Turn on the phone’s Bluetooth and location services too.

During Android setup that joins a temporary Sensi network, wait about a minute for Connected without internet. If prompted, select Yes, I want to stay connected. Check Don’t ask again if offered, then return to setup.

If the phone switches away, open Connections > Wi-Fi > Advanced Wi-Fi settings, sometimes under the three-dot menu. Disable the applicable Smart Network Switch, Avoid Poor Connections, Switch to mobile data, or Intelligent Wi-Fi switching option. Names and placement vary by Android manufacturer.

You can also temporarily turn off Mobile Data under Connections > Mobile or Mobile Networks. Retry setup, then restore the switching and mobile-data settings afterward.

Reconnect Sensi Smart or Lite

On Sensi Smart, press Menu, select Connect, and check the setup display. If it shows 33, tap Next in the app, then scan the QR code on the thermostat’s back or its card, or enter its PIN. Enable your phone’s Bluetooth, remount the cover, and tap Next.

Choose your network, tap Next, and manually enter the Wi-Fi password twice. Tap Join Network, then Start Using Sensi. If Smart reports a secure-connection error, select the actual thermostat display in the app and use the Security Code on the thermostat’s back if it differs from the Welcome Guide.

For HomeKit-capable Smart hardware showing 11 or 22, use iPhone or iPad accessory setup. Join your home 2.4 GHz network, press Menu and select Connect on the thermostat, then open Settings > Wi-Fi on your phone. Under Set up a new device…, select Sensi-XXXXXX, tap Next, then Done. For another Smart setup display, or if this connection fails, use Sensi’s guided support for your hardware.

With Sensi Lite, enable Bluetooth and scan the QR code on the thermostat’s back or the Get Started card, or enter its PIN. Remount the cover, hold the three-dot mode button for four seconds, then tap the three-dot mode button twice. In the app, choose your network, tap Next, manually type the password twice, then tap Join Network and Start Using Sensi.

Reconnect Sensi Touch or Touch 2

On Sensi Touch, open Menu > Wi-Fi and select the Wi-Fi icon, or select Set up new network. In the app’s connection workflow, identify the icons or message shown on the thermostat, then tap Connect and join the Sensi network (Sensi-XXXXXX). Tap Next, enter the PIN currently displayed on the touchscreen, choose your home network, and enter its password.

Touch also supports accessory setup on iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or later. Join your home 2.4 GHz network, then open Menu > Wi-Fi on the thermostat and select the house icon, or select Set up new network. On your phone, open Settings > Wi-Fi, find Set up a new device…, select Sensi-XXXXXX, then tap Next and Done. To bypass HomeKit, use the manual Touch workflow above.

For Touch 2, enable your phone’s Bluetooth, tap the thermostat’s menu icon, then open Wi-Fi and select Connect or Reconnect. Scan the touchscreen QR code in the Sensi app. Alternatively, tap Use PIN in the app and Display PIN on the thermostat, then enter the 21-digit code. Continue with Next, select your network, enter its password, and finish with Start Using Sensi.

Improve the signal and check router settings

Move the router to a central location and reduce obstructions to improve a weak Wi-Fi signal. For adjustable antennas, use vertical positioning for one floor, horizontal positioning for multiple floors, or mixed positions with multiple antennas. Move or disable interfering devices, and try 2.4 GHz channel 1, 6, or 11.

Check router security and use WPA2 Personal/PSK with AES. WPA3 support applies to Lite and Smart hardware displaying 33, so check your model before choosing it. WPA2 Enterprise and networks requiring a browser login or acceptance of terms are unsupported. For those networks, ask the administrator for an appropriate password-protected personal Wi-Fi network.

Enable the router’s DHCP setting and make sure its address pool has room for every thermostat. Sensi cannot accept a manually programmed static address; use a DHCP reservation if you need a fixed local address. For router compatibility problems, install the supported firmware for your exact router model through its manufacturer’s support page or automatic-update setting. Exact router menus vary.

Check power when the Wi-Fi icon disappears

A missing Wi-Fi icon calls for checking the radio and thermostat power. On Smart, press Menu and advance with Next to the Wireless screen, use ↑ to select On, then press Exit. On Touch, open Menu > Wi-Fi and enable the radio. On Touch 2, tap the menu icon, open Wi-Fi, and select On for Wi-Fi radio.

If Smart has a half-full battery indicator or Lite displays Low batteries, pull off the cover, remove the batteries, and wait for a blank display. Install two fresh AA alkaline batteries in Smart or two fresh AAA alkaline batteries in Lite. Reattach the cover and retry Wi-Fi.

Repeated disconnections can also involve HVAC power, so check breakers, furnace or air-handler panel closure, and blocked condensate drains. Restore power after an outage or service work. Test heating and cooling, and contact an HVAC technician if the equipment fails to operate. Once power is restored, power-cycle the thermostat and retry Wi-Fi.

Touch and Touch 2 require a C-wire on all systems; Smart and Lite require one for heat-only, cool-only, and heat-pump systems. Switch off HVAC power before wiring work. Have the wiring corrected for your actual system.

Test another network before seeking support

Use a second phone to create a compatible hotspot, normally on 2.4 GHz. Connect your setup phone to that hotspot and verify internet access, then repeat Sensi setup and select the hotspot as the thermostat’s network. A successful connection points toward a home-router setting or compatibility problem.

If setup still fails, open Contact Sensi and use the Sensi Virtual Assistant on that page for guided help, or call 888-605-7131. Use Sensi support for unresolved errors, router compatibility questions, and suspected hardware faults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you choose New Installation after changing your router?

For a previously working thermostat, choose Connect to Wi-Fi after a router or password change. If initial installation was never completed, tap +, select your model, and choose New Installation.
