Fresh batteries should wake up a Roku TV remote, but a blocked infrared signal, a lost voice-remote pairing, or a Roku TV restart can still stop it cold. Start with the quick checks that match your remote, then use the Roku app or a replacement only when the remote still will not respond.

Check the Remote Type and Batteries

The right fix starts with the remote in your hand.

  1. 1.Look near the purple directional pad for a Microphone button or a magnifying-glass voice button.
  2. 2.If that button is there, treat it as a Roku voice remote.
  3. 3.If there is no voice button, treat it as a Roku simple remote.
  4. 4.Remove both batteries, then press any two remote buttons.
  5. 5.Insert a fresh matching pair of AA or AAA batteries as marked inside the compartment, negative end first.
  6. 6.Replace the battery cover and test the remote again.

Clear the Path for a Simple Remote

A Roku simple remote uses infrared, so it needs a clear path to the TV or Roku device. New batteries will not help if the signal cannot reach the sensor.

Move anything blocking the front of the TV or Roku player. Keep the Roku player out from behind the TV and out of a cabinet, then point the remote from a few different angles.

If the simple remote still does nothing, do not try to pair it. A Roku simple remote does not have a pairing button and does not need to sync, so restart the Roku TV or test the remote signal next.

Pair a Roku Voice Remote Again

The most common cause after a battery change on a Roku voice remote is that the remote needs to reconnect.

Restart the Roku TV or Roku player first.

If your voice remote has a Pairing button on the back or under the battery cover, hold Pairing for 5 seconds until the status light flashes.

Wait for the pairing message to appear on the TV.

If your voice remote has no Pairing button, press and hold Back and Home for 5 seconds until the status light flashes.

Keep the remote near the TV while Roku finishes pairing.

Use Roku Settings to Add the Remote

When another remote or the Roku mobile app can still control the TV, use the on-screen pairing path. Press Home, then open Settings, Remotes & devices, Add devices, Remote, and Continue.

Follow the prompts on the TV. Roku will guide the voice remote through pairing from there.

If the remote buttons work but Power, Volume, or Mute do not, update Roku first. Go to Settings, System, System Update, and Check Now, then open Settings, Remotes & Devices, Remotes, and Set up remote for TV control.

Restart the Roku TV Without the Remote

Use this when the remote is completely unresponsive and you cannot reach the menu. A power restart also puts the Roku TV or player itself into pairing mode, so it is ready the moment you put the voice remote into pairing mode.

Unplug the Roku TV power cord from the outlet.

Wait at least 5 seconds.

Plug it back in and wait for the Home screen.

When the Home screen appears, put the voice remote into pairing mode.

Use the Pairing button for 5 seconds, or hold Back and Home for 5 seconds if the remote has no pairing button.

Use the Roku Mobile App as a Temporary Remote

Download the official Roku mobile app from the App Store or Google Play.

Make sure your phone and Roku TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Open the app and select your Roku device.

Tap Remote.

Use the on-screen buttons to navigate. Tap the Microphone icon for voice search and control, or tap Keyboard when you need to enter text.

The app cannot detect a Roku TV that is offline, reset, or not yet set up on Wi-Fi.

Fix Roku App Discovery Problems

This fixes cases where the phone remote should work, but the app cannot find the Roku TV.

Confirm that the phone or tablet and the Roku TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.

On an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14 or higher, allow the Roku app to detect and connect to local devices.

Disconnect any VPN running on the phone or tablet.

Make sure the Roku IP address is private and that router or client isolation is not blocking devices from communicating.

If automatic discovery still fails, find the Roku IP address from Settings, Network, and About.

In the Roku app, tap Devices, tap Get help?, choose Connect manually, enter the IP address, and tap CONNECT.

Stop the Wrong Low Battery Warning

This applies when you replaced the batteries but Roku still shows a low-battery warning. The warning may be coming from a different paired remote.

Remove the batteries from unused Roku remotes.

You can also disable an unused remote by holding Back, Home, and Mute for 5 seconds on that remote.

If you can open Roku settings with another remote or the app, check the battery level for the paired voice remote from Settings, Remotes & Devices, Remotes, Your Remote, and About.

Replace the Remote or Use a Last Resort Reset

Buy a compatible official Roku replacement remote if the remote stays unresponsive after the supported fixes.

Roku sells two main types, Simple Remotes and Voice Remotes, so match the replacement to your Roku TV before ordering.

Factory reset is not Roku’s remote-specific fix. Use it only when the Roku TV has broader system problems, because it erases setup and account or device settings.

To factory reset from the TV menu, press Home, then open Settings, System, Advanced system settings, Factory reset, and Factory reset everything. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Match the replacement remote first if the Roku TV itself works normally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Roku TV remote not working even with new batteries?

The usual causes are blocked line of sight on a simple remote, a voice remote that needs pairing, weak or mismatched batteries, or a Roku TV that needs a restart.

Do all Roku TV remotes need to be paired?

No. Roku simple remotes do not pair. Roku voice remotes pair with a Pairing button or by holding Back and Home for 5 seconds.

Can I use my phone if my Roku TV remote is dead?

Yes, if the Roku TV is powered on, already set up on Wi-Fi, and on the same network as your phone. Open the official Roku mobile app and tap Remote.

Should I factory reset my Roku TV to fix the remote?

Only when the Roku TV has broader system problems too. A factory reset erases setup and account or device settings, so use battery, pairing, restart, and app-control fixes first.
