Your Roku keeps searching for Wi-Fi, but your home network never appears. Start with the network name and a fresh scan, then work through restarts, signal fixes, and the settings that affect which networks Roku detects.
Check the network name and nearby devices
Look at the Wi-Fi network your phone or computer is connected to and compare its name with Roku’s network list. The router’s label may show its default network name, also called an SSID. If you renamed the network, use its current name.
Stand beside the TV and check whether your phone, tablet, or computer detects that same network. If no device sees it, restart the router using the instructions below. Contact your internet provider if the network stays missing on every device.
If another device sees the network but Roku still does not, run a fresh scan next.
Scan again from Roku’s network settings
Use your Roku remote to run a new wireless search.
- 1.Press Home and open Settings.
- 2.Select Network, then Set up connection.
- 3.Choose Wireless. During initial setup, select Wireless when asked. On Roku TVs that display the Connect to the Internet screen, select Set up new wireless connection.
- 4.Select Scan again to see all networks. If you see Scan again instead, such as during initial setup, select that option.
- 5.Choose your network, enter its password, and select Connect.
Restart Roku and your network equipment
If a fresh scan still leaves your network missing, restart Roku and your router before changing router settings. Press Home and open Settings > System > Power > System restart. If there is no Power submenu, select System restart directly under System.
Alternatively, unplug Roku’s power connection. Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect Roku’s power.
Disconnect your router and modem from power. If you have a combined modem and router, disconnect that single device instead. Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the network equipment and let it finish restarting. Return to Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless and select Scan again to see all networks.
Reveal hidden networks and enable router Wi-Fi
A hidden network needs a different connection route. On a TCL Roku TV, select Private network on the network-selection screen, enter the exact network name, then enter its password when prompted. Both entries are case-sensitive; other Roku TVs with the Private network option use this route too.
To make the network visible on supported NETGEAR routers, sign in at routerlogin.net and open Wireless. Select Enable SSID Broadcast, then Apply. Pro Gaming models use Settings > Wireless Setup; other router brands have their own network visibility setting.
If the wireless radio is disabled on a supported NETGEAR router, open ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless settings. Select Enable Wireless Router Radio under a band your Roku supports, then select Apply. After changing visibility or enabling the radio, return to Roku’s Wireless screen and select Scan again to see all networks.
Give the Wi-Fi signal a clearer path
Bring your Roku and router closer together. Move equipment out of enclosed spaces. Remove obstructions between Roku and the router.
Elevate the router. Adjust the router’s antennas. Move the router away from microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors.
For a Streaming Stick tucked behind the TV, connect an HDMI extender between the stick and the TV to position it away from the obstruction. Tip: Eligible Streaming Stick owners in supported countries can request an extender through Roku’s HDMI extender form.
Restore your Streaming Stick’s receiver cable
Check the cable if you replaced it on a Streaming Stick+ model 3810X or Streaming Stick 4K model 3820, especially if you see error 022. These models use a wireless receiver built into the Roku-supplied USB power cable.
Disconnect the replacement USB power cable. Reconnect the original Roku cable containing the wireless receiver.
Restore power. For Streaming Stick 4K model 3820, connect the supplied cable to the included wall-power adapter. For any USB-powered Roku player reporting low power or restarting unexpectedly, use a wall outlet instead of the TV’s USB port.
Switch to a supported Wi-Fi band or channel
A 5 GHz network using a DFS channel is incompatible with Roku models that lack DFS support. If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try the other supported band through Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless.
For a Roku without DFS support, choose an available non-DFS router channel in the 36–48 or 149–165 ranges. Models without DFS support include 3810X, 3811X, 4800X, and 9101X; models with DFS support require Roku OS 12.0 or later to use it.
On a supported NETGEAR router, sign in at routerlogin.net and open Wireless. Under the relevant band, choose a supported value in Channel. For congested 2.4 GHz networks in North America, Roku recommends trying 1, 6, or 11; channel availability depends on your region and hardware.
Select Apply. Other router brands use different menus. Restart the router if required to apply the change. Return to Roku’s Wireless screen and select Scan again to see all networks.
Reset the connection and try another network
Open Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset > Reset connection to clear Roku’s saved network connection information. Set up Wi-Fi again through Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless.
To test an iPhone hotspot, open Settings > Personal Hotspot. Your mobile plan must support hotspot use. Enable Allow Others to Join.
On iPhone 12 or later, enable Maximize Compatibility. Leave the iPhone on the Personal Hotspot screen while Roku connects. Select the hotspot’s name on Roku’s Wireless screen. The hotspot must use a band and security configuration your Roku supports.
Enter the hotspot password, then select Connect. For a Roku with a built-in Ethernet port, connect an Ethernet cable between Roku and your router as an alternative. Select Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wired.
Once Roku is online, check for updates through Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check Now. Some menus use System update > Check now. Tip: If Roku connects to the hotspot but still cannot find your home network, check the home router’s settings and coverage next.
Save a factory reset for last
A factory reset removes Roku’s settings, apps, and account linkage. Use it only after the earlier steps fail, and be ready to repeat setup.
Press Home and open Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset. On a Roku TV, select Factory reset everything. Follow the confirmation prompts. Complete setup again.
If Roku still cannot find your network, open Roku’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting page and select Start chatting under Chat with us. Explain whether one network or every network is missing. For a TCL Roku TV that still cannot detect a network other devices see, contact TCL Support with the TV model and router make and model; contact the corresponding manufacturer for other Roku TV brands.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Roku mobile app reconnect a Roku that is offline?
No. The app needs an existing, reachable Roku connection on a working local network. It cannot establish the initial Wi-Fi connection on an offline Roku.
My network appears now, but Roku cannot connect. What should I check?
Confirm the password, then ask the router owner to check parental controls, access restrictions, and MAC filtering. For hotel or dorm Wi-Fi on a supported Roku TV, select I am at a hotel or college dorm, then OK. On a phone or computer, join the temporary network using the name and password displayed on the TV. Open a browser and complete the property’s sign-in requirements.
Can I use a USB Ethernet adapter if my Roku has no Ethernet port?
Supported models include Streaming Stick 3840X, Streaming Stick Plus 3830X, Express 3960/3960RS, Express 4K 3940, and Express 4K+ 3941. Roku specifies compatible 10/100 Mbps AX8877X or SMSC95XX adapters with the appropriate USB connector. Match the adapter to your exact model before buying.
Can I update a Roku TV while the TV is offline?
Roku offers a USB update route for eligible unactivated Roku TVs that support Connect to the internet later. Use an internet-connected computer to access tvupdate.roku.com and download the TV’s software. This is not a universal offline-update method for every Roku TV or streaming player.
